TOM strikes again!

Oh woe is me! So here we are again, with Tom's first visit since I started Atkins. I seem to be three entire pounds heavier than at my last weigh in! I knew I shouldn't weigh during this, but I did. It does make me feel bad. I know it shouldn't. It's as if three of the seven pounds I struggled to lose during Induction have been stolen from me.... and what if they just stay on instead of disappearing instantly once Tom has left town?

Oh, the worries. Oh, the drama!
:?:

HealthierLori 02-17-2010 04:55 PM

They will disappear, I promise! I was 169 before my TOM and now I'm 163 as of this morning! They will disappear, I promise! Just watch every month, you will see a pattern where you gain water weight and then lose it again. It's just how we are made, and there isn't anything we can do about it except to remind ourselves not to worry!

I was worried too. It's normal to worry and notice the scale more. But I can tell you from experience it will go away and you'll be happy again in a week! :)

firefly68 02-17-2010 05:18 PM

yay, thank you! That's just what I needed to hear. I was crying into my One Minute Muffin, but now I'm happier. :)

honeybjones 02-17-2010 05:58 PM

Wish my scale said 157. Wanna trade scales?

firefly68 02-17-2010 06:47 PM

Hi honeybjones! :) Sorry, I don't mean to sound ungrateful about being 157. It's the gain that is so upsetting, not the number really.

Aw...well, in a few days. Maybe it will go away!

cher37 02-17-2010 07:53 PM

... thought this might make you feel better ... I used to gain upwards of 8lbs during my TOM, but now, I've had 2 cycles since starting (every 21 days - thought this might make you feel better ;)) & went up 3-4 lbs each time - what I hang on to now (and won't necessarily dread TOM's arrival) is that when it's all finished, the water weight's gone +1lb!

oh, I've also noticed that with following Atkins, with the low-carb, there's been hardly (if at all) any blood sugar lows = fewer (& of less intensity) mood swings during TOM!

p.s. remember to eat your greens & drink your water + some

honeybjones 02-17-2010 08:03 PM

I shouldn't tease you. I haven't had a cycle in 2 1/2 years so monthly weight gain is not something I have to deal with. Ok there..we're even.

Ok someone help me decide what to watch tonight--Obese and Pregnant or America's Best Pigout Spots.

firefly68 02-17-2010 08:16 PM

I've noticed that about the blood sugar. Thanks cher37 -- now I'm excited about what will happen in a few days after this is all overwith! :)

That's strange you should mention 21 days. I've had the same thing going on the past two months or so.

Ha! I'm watching Obese and Pregnant, but I'm bored so I keep switching back to the rerun of Ghost Hunters. I'm in the throes of TOM myself right now (up 4 pounds, but I'm used to it) so I can't handle the Pigout show. I'm already hungry enough. ;)

firefly68 02-17-2010 08:30 PM

No cycle in 2 1/2 years? We're not even: you're the winner! LOL I'm watching snowboarding on the olympics, although not intently.

honeybjones 02-17-2010 08:31 PM

Isn't that a disgusting symbol of the mixed messages people get in this country? "Eat enough to feed a small village but you better not get fat!"

honeybjones 02-17-2010 08:33 PM

lol I have a birth control implant that stops your cycle in 20% of women. Sometimes its good to be in the minority.

Yep. No - nothing to do with birth control. Every 21 days for 2 "full" days (sorry if TMI :o) .... I have a "unic-horned* uterus" (half a uterus) w. 1 functioning tube - so for me, nothing's normal!

Violet73 02-17-2010 09:31 PM

ok this is a very interesting yet funny thread! I am quite entertained! :D

HealthierLori 02-18-2010 11:57 AM

Cheryl! This is way TMI (I apologize to everyone if I gross you out) but I am a didelphys uterus! I have two uterii (is that the plural of uterus, LOL?) and two cervixes and two....well, two of everything on the inside. So I always think I get double periods. It will start on the left and then finish on the right - I get cramps on one side real bad then cramps on the other side even worse, LOL. And you are right - nothing is normal for us! And oh my goodness talk about needing to take iron every month. Whew!

HealthierLori 02-18-2010 12:08 PM

Oh, and Honey, I just love reading your posts. You have the most brilliant sense of humor!

honeybjones 02-18-2010 01:11 PM

:D Making people laugh is like the most fun I can have in life.

Torister 02-18-2010 03:24 PM

It will be gone soon enough. I fluctuate up 5-6 lbs every month. It is frustrating when you are staying on plan to see the scale do this, but it will drop back in a couple of days. No worries!

Deena52 02-20-2010 01:58 PM

Wait a minute.:D Pregnant and obese? Best pig-out spots? What channel(s) are these shows on and when? I've never heard of them.

Firefly....I don't even get TOM anymore and even I notice patterns when being on Atkins.....especially regarding the sequence of events that usually go along with the scale dropping. Venturing down....creeping up a little...bouncing around, back and forth....sudden downward plunge...water retention as a compensatory response...bounce back up and then weight stabilizing at the new low.
You'll get used to your body's unique little patterns.

Once you really get an understanding of just how Atkins works and all your body's patterns while on it.....you can then even venture out into discovering other patterns. For instance, about half-way or a little more to goal, I began to experiment with a bit of calorie cycling/alternating....just to see what my body would decide to do with it. And I'm still working on it....as my body seems to have two different sequences associated with it and I'm trying to figure out why.....or which one works better and how I can get it to only do that particular one. :D
Plus, using trial and error teaches us more about our own unique physiology and about the physiology/biochemistry of how the human body works.
And information is power.

I think one was on the Learning channel and one was on the Travel channel. I love the juxtaposition--eat all you want but if you get fat it is a sign of personal weakness.

Deena52 02-20-2010 02:25 PM

OK....pregnant and obese definitely sounds like the Learning Channel (TLC). They have become the channel of sensational medical stories and bizarre families, etc. In many ways, it's changed.....and not in a good way...in terms of wholesome, etc.

So the greatest pig-out spots must be the Travel Channel.....and I don't think we have that on the basic cable line-up....so would have to go and catch that in my dad's room where he has the digital box/cable set-up. If you happen to come across when these shows come on, let me know.

And let's face it.....one's weight sure isn't the only thing we get mixed messages about from the media.:(

I believe they showed Pregnant and Obese on both TLC and Discovery Health, which makes sense since they're all owed by the same overlord, I believe.

Travel Channel is the new food network for sure. They have lots of 'pigout'-type shows, they've got Anthony Bourdain, and they've got Man vs. Food, where Adam Rich stuffs himself beyond what is healthy or safe for our entertainment every week. It's ridiculous! Yet I obviously watch, since I know their line-up so well.

honeybjones 02-20-2010 02:56 PM

At least the consequences of Adam's over indulgence is obvious as he has gotten pudgier over time. Although he does say he works out constantly. Imagine if he ate like that and was sedentary. I have no idea how Anthony Bourdain manages to stay thin and he even quit smoking after a few seasons.

thistoo 02-20-2010 03:02 PM

I think the reason Anthony pulls it off, honestly, is the principles laid out by Atkins and people like Gary Taubes. He's one of those chefs who believes in good cuts of meat, lots of fat, and isn't crazy about dessert. There are a lot of chefs like that, at least if the chatter between chefs on Top Chef is to be believed. They are all doing Atkins, basically.

honeybjones 02-20-2010 03:08 PM

I also have a little crush on Anthony, or as I like to call him, Tony. Don't Tell Gary though. I hate to have them fighting over me.

Deena52 02-20-2010 03:15 PM

 Hahaha! You're too funny, honey. Heck, nothing wrong with two guys fighting over you.

I love Anthony Bourdain too....even though he's a bit of a food snob...he's entitled to it. He wrote a critique of "Semi-Homemade" one time that made me choke, I was laughing so hard.

And yes, TLC and Discovery are the same overlord. Don't even get me started on that whole Gosselin mess (Jon and Kate). I'm practically boycotting those channels in protest at this point (though I might have to make an exception for Pregnant and Obese...as it sounds so intriguing...meaning, so bad that it's good). :D

If I had to choose, I'd pick Taubes, though. Would probably be threatened by a guy who could cook better than me....plus his aloofness would throw me a bit, I'm thinking. Would be more comfortable with the genius who also has common sense. Might just come down to who has the better sense of humor...hmmm. :o

deena :)

ADDED: Gee, since it's come down to sense-of-humor, I might have to choose you, honeyb. :D Hahaha....just kidding, girlfriend. I know you're already married. :D

honeybjones 02-20-2010 03:22 PM

I would choose Taubes too. Bourdain has a lot of personal/emotional issues that I would not have the patience to deal with. Plus he has bad teeth.

Deena52 02-20-2010 04:45 PM

:D I totally agree, honeyb. I'd prefer the intelligent professorial guy over the rather intriguingly arrogant, experienced globe-trotter for sure. I could always get him dentures....but he's not really my type, even though he intrigues me from afar.

However....are we sharing Gary or will we have to fight over him? :D:rollpin::kickbutt:

deena :D

honeybjones 02-20-2010 05:09 PM

aaahahahahha he can spend summers up north with you and those cold cold winter nights in the south with me.

Deena52 02-20-2010 05:48 PM

:D Great plan.

And absence makes the heart grow fonder...so I'll appreciate the time I get to have him. I'll take him to the beach and teach him to get funky.:o :belly:

I'll have him explain his book to me while we're swinging from the chandeliers. :cloud9:

deena  :joker:

Once you have the inside scoop please come back and spill the low net carb beans.

Deena52 02-21-2010 04:14 PM

 Hahaha!

Giiirl.....just be glad I did not post that I wanted him to smack me with HIS celery stalk....and just wrote "a" celery stalk....on that other thread here. Wanted to keep it clean. :D:drool:
