I bought a gazelle in January 2006. I got the deluxe model and the thing slides all over the floor. I can't ever use it because I eventually slide back and hit the wall. It even moves on the carpet! It is not as portable as they make it sound either. I am going to save for the elliptical, I think it's more bang for the buck. Good Luck!
Ok,,,,,,,,have to admit...when I saw the title Gazelle.........I thought,,,,Oh, my, does someone eat Gazelle?????? My DH is at deer camp........so I have wild game on the brain, I guess......
I love my gazelle! I got the mid-range version since the cheapest version has a weight limit of 200. Mine folds up (although not as portable as they say on TV) and it doesn't slide around (but I have it on carpeting). I think it's fun and easy to use.
BTW... Stopeating - maybe you could buy one of the floor mats they make for exercise equipment to keep it from sliding.
I love my Gazelle. I bought the mid range model. Mine doesn't slide around, but like bizlawchick and nicole-I totally agree on the portability aspect. They make it look so easy on the infomercials, but it's so long and heavy when it's folded up it's hard to maneuver around, and hard to find a place to store it.
I think the motion of it is alot like an elliptical machine, but for me it's better because it's no impact. I have weak knees and ankles, and even though an elliptical is supposed to be smooth, it still gives me a little jarring because of the motion. I don't get pain from using the Gazelle, though, so I can stay on it longer. I'm sure an elliptical probably burns a few more calories in a workout, because it's a little harder to do, but cardio is cardio, and it's a good thing no matter what machine you choose to do it on.
As far as price-watch for sales at HSN. I got $100 off mine, with free delivery, and HSN lets you break it up into 4 or 5 payments-it was really affordable that way because I didn't have to come up with it all at once. They have a cheap model of the Gazelle at Walmart, I think it's around $100.00, but I tried one out there before I bought mine, and it's definitely not as sturdy and has a lower weight limit. It also didn't have the computer and heart rate monitor-but that's not really necessary anyway. It was still worth the extra to have one that's better built and had the extra resistance pistons.
Thanks so much for the input. I won't buy the cheap one at WalMart, and i will look into HSN. I have a bad knee and weak ankles as well, so it sounds perfect for me. I'd really like to have a treadmill, but they have no portability and are way expensive for the good ones.
