Default Newbie and a few Questions

Hello,

My doctor diagnosed me a few weeks ago with PCOS and prescribed Metformin 500mg. I have an appointment next week to go over lab results and all that. One of my questions is how do you know that the Metformin is working or doing what it needs? I notice that many of you are on 1000 mg or higher, so I wonder if mine needs to be upped. Also. the doctor did say that my prolactin level was higher than normal. Anyone had that as well? I'm not totally sure what that all means, though. Oh, and one other thing. What kind of diets/programs are you successfully losing on? Thanks!

Hi there. I don't have PCOS, thought I do take Met for IR. I am on the same diet as my hubby who is type 2 diabetic. He has to count his carbs. It is not Adkins it is alot more laid back. it is working well. Have you ever talked with a nutritionist? The next time you go in to see your doc ask them what they suggest.

I have PCOS and was told by my specialist to use a low-carb diet. I chose Atkins. When I went back to him 4 months later, I found that most of his patients are on SBD. He was impressed with my 36 lb. loss and told me to keep doing exactly what I was doing. I don't know for sure what an elevated prolactin level would be, I guess this is one of the few tests that I haven't had.

Thank you so much for your responses. I went to a nutritionist and she was so vague about what to do. No set "plan." She told me to eat fruit and veggies and stay around 1200-1600 calories a day. I really do think that I need to study low carb a little more. I don't think that I know the right way to do it. Thank you again!
