Default Why marketeers don't want you to lose weight

Marketing companies know EXACTLY what we want. So they create products to sell us what we want. But, what we want isn't the same thing as what we actually need!

Most fitness products are designed to line the pockets of the creators with money, not to help you to get fit. Think about it. If you actually got fit by completing the next fad diet or by buying a machine that “targets belly fat”, there would be no need to go back and spend more money with them.

Instead, when these products don’t work, you blame yourself - they make YOU feel bad because the product itself DOESN’T WORK - at least not in the long term. You blame your lack of conviction and try something else. You go back and buy ANOTHER product that won’t work and give these companies MORE of your money. These companies suck…

So let's break down some of the common myths that scammy marketeers use to part us with our hard earned cash.

Target that belly fat

No one wants belly flab. It’s therefore easy to target potential customers by offering a quick fix solution to this problem.

The only problem, those solutions don’t work.

If you’ve ever set foot in a gym, you’ve probably seen people spending all of their time on abs machines, brutally punishing them self to try and burn belly fat. Every time they do that a little bit of themselves die inside as they just can’t shift that fat, no matter how hard they “target” it.

The truth:
YOU CANNOT TARGET FAT

That’s right. It is not scientifically possible, ever, to target fat. The only way to reduce belly fat is to reduce ALL of your fat by burning more calories than you consume and eating healthier meals.

Fat comes off your body in a particular order, depending on your genetics. It could come off your belly first, or your thighs, or your butt - you cannot change this order. It is unique to you.

Ab exercises target muscles. So, all that time spent on the abs machines means you will have built up strength in your core, but still retained that belly fat. The best way to get abs you can see are by doing exercises that workout your whole body (pushups, pullups, deadlifts etc).

In fact, you NEVER have to do a sit up in order to get a six pack.

And clean up your diet. If you eat donuts after every workout session, you’ll never lose weight.

Workout, eat cleaner and your stomach will flatten out as you lose fat from all over your body.

Muscle confusion

Right, do a lunge. Now lift this weight up and down above your head whilst you are lunging. Now, balance on this box whilst doing all of this. You’ll get shredded in no time at all. Remember, the more you confuse your body, the harder you have to work and the harder you work the quicker you will get results.

Sure, this may work for you. Commit to 90 minutes a day 6 days a week for 3 months and you are GOING to see some pretty sweet results.

In fact, if you do ANYTHING consistently, you are going to see results. The problem is the “consistency” aspect of this. Making something harder than it needs to be is a sure fire way to burn you out and then crash… hard.

We have probably all been at the point where we've sat at desks at work and then come home and sat down in front of the TV, everyday, for months or years. Then, one day we decide to do one of these insanely brutal and complex exercise routines and feel sick afterwards. This is why we start to think that exercise is punishment. We have to brutally torture our bodies in order to look good.

The truth is, exercise can be fun. You don't HAVE to do insanely complicated routines. Your muscles grow when you push yourself to your limits. You don’t HAVE to switch your workouts or do insanely complicated exercises to be successful. In fact, this just makes it harder for yourself mentally.

Whilst the same exercises over and over again may be boring, but they enable you to track your progress, are simpler to follow and you will also spend less time exercising and make faster progress.

LOW FAT FOOD!!

This one makes me sad. It really does.

All of those people who have actively made the decision to eat healthily, buying low fat food and struggling through trying to lose weight, have been tricked into heading for disaster.

Here’s the low down. Fat does not make you fat. Fat was vilified by the scientific community within the last 40 to 50 years without any real scientific evidence to back it up. Since then we have become obsessed with “low fat” and “fat free” foods and yet obesity worldwide is at a record high.

The real link between food and fat? Carbs and sugar.

When taking the fat out of products to promote “healthy” eating, these low fat foods tasted awwwwful! So, to get them to taste better again, LOTS of sugar was added. This means that a typical “low fat” product designed to be good for you, is actually very high in carbs and has similar calorie counts to normal whole fat foods.

Now, when we eat foods high in carbs, all of the sugar in these low fat foods gets into our blood fast and causes massive blood sugar spikes. When you get sugar into your system, you start to have cravings for more sugar, making us eat even more. This is why you never stop at just one biscuit when you open the biscuit tin!

Then, all of this excess sugar builds up and our body doesn’t need it. So, it makes the decision to store it for when you DO need it. So it gets turned to fat and tucked away safely on your stomach, thighs, arms, butt, neck. Wherever it can find room.

No added sugar

In a similar vein to the “low fat” food, “no added sugar” products don’t necessarily mean they are better for you. What this label actually means is that no ADDITIONAL sugar has been added, beyond what is already in the product naturally. Did you know that healthy juices targeted towards children can actually contain up to 1.5x the amount of sugar than a can of coke?

Read the labels and ingredients to understand the contents of these foods. Think twice before eating a “low fat” or “no added sugar” product.

The exciting bit:
Eat a real cookie, not a “diet” one. It’s better for you.

The magic weight loss pill

Ah yes, the magic pill that makes everything better. Stuff your face at breakfast? It’s okay, pop a pill. Stuff your face at lunch? It’s okay, pop a pill. Dinner? Fine, eat as much as you want. Just pop a pill after. Then wake up tomorrow having somehow magically lost weight.

Anyone who sits down for 5 minutes and researches weight loss pills will begin to question whether they really work. The truth is, some may help slightly increase your metabolism, but not if you don’t drastically change your diet. And, quite frankly, if you change your diet and start eating clean then it is this change that will help you lose weight, not some pill.

Weight loss pills are marketed at people who want quick fix solution to their weight loss problems that allows them to continue to live in their comfort zone, stuff their faces and never make any real positive change in their life.

Here’s the long and short of it:
- Most companies make up crap to sell you products, not to help you get healthy. Otherwise, who would buy their products if everyone was healthy?
- There is no one perfect routine that is better than others. Consistent change is key. Do anything for long enough and you’ll see changes.
- Full fat foods are better for you than low fat foods.
- Weight loss pills don’t work unless you also start eating better. And if you eat better then there’s no need for weight loss pills.

What are your most hated marketing ploys?
