You go! I know! It's hard, you think you're eating healthfully and that it's not that much calories but in reality, it's more than you think. Counting calories will help you greatly! Plan low calorie foods to eat beforehand and eat more fruits and veggies, they're low cal and mostly water (not to mention, great for your body!)! Portion sizes are a biggie too, every little thing counts to push you forward into a better eating habit. GOOD LUCK!

It's amazing how much it adds up if you're not careful! Welcome to calorie counting and the forum! I'm sure it will be an adjustment, but you will do fine if you stick with it and find what works for you.

Remember, nonstarchy vegetables are your friends. You can eat a LOT of them, and fill up, so you won't feel deprived.

It is truly amazing when you count up the number of calories you are consuming without realizing it. For example, one strawberry danish from the vending machine down the hall is nearly 500 calories by itself. The healthy choice steamer I'm eating right now is 210. A dinner I had last week on a very rare "I don't care I'm hungry" day cost me at least a thousand calories on its own. I believe one teeny, tiny PB&J from Smuckers is around 200 and who can have just one?!

It's good that you realized this and now you can remedy the problem.

*sigh* Yeah, it's really amazing to me the number of calories I could MINDLESSLY consume. I'm finding that portion size was a biggie for me. Only eat one serving of something?? Who wouldathunkit?

Yes! Knowing now, what I used to eat, it's a wonder I didn't weigh even more than my high weight of 185! (at 5 feet tall this is still really bad)

I would eat over 2000 calories on a really good day.

On a bad day, or a "eat out at a restaurant day" I am sure I was at 3000-4000 calories in one day. And for a person my height, that is ridiculous.

It's amazing how I could have eaten like that without even knowing it.

Breakfast 500-600 calories
snack 250 calories
lunch 600-700 calories
snack 250 calories
dinner 1000 calories
dessert or before dinner snack 250 calories

This would be an average or good day!
Terrible! and this was how I ate every day!

Now I keep it between 1250 and 1700 calories, and I am maintaining.

I wish someone would have told me a long time ago
