I like the green giant box of french cut green beans with almonds and i put balsamic vinegar on them... eat hot or let cool and put on a salad. Not that it's a great snack ... but a quick part of a lunch or dinner.
A pita pocket cut into triangles (split the halves first), with olive oil spray and garlic salt and baked. Need to eat soon as they get HARD.
One of my FAVORITE snacks / meal additions right now is eating about 20 fresh green beans, 10 grapes or 5 fresh cherries, 2 tbsp plain hummus (this kind is 40 calories for 2 tbsp), and a 35 cal light cheese spread wedge (like the French onion kind). All this is about 130 calories. And it helps with munchies because of all the green beans.
potato soup - 100 calories per cup (this isn't homeade)
yogurt with tbsp organic maple syrup - 150 calories
add nuts - 250 calories
mashed cauliflower - 100 for vegetables + 100 for butter = 200 calories (but of course you may not even use butter. you'd need something though in order to make it smooth.)
kefir, spinach and fruit smoothie - calories depend on how much you use
Cottage cheese: low calorie and high protein. Takes all sorts of flavorings: cinnamon, cocoa powder, hot sauce, seasoned salt.
Cabbage: shockingly low calorie. I bake it with onions and top with soy sauce
Oranges.
Baked chicken breast.
Any non-starchy vegetables. When I first started, I found those "steam in a bag" jobs to be invaluable. I'd eat the whole bag of broccoli or cauliflower.
Chicken breast - cubed in tacos w/ 2% Mexican shredded cheese, lettuce and tomatoes.
Soups - I buy canned so they're high in sodium but it's a good low calorie trade off for when I'm too tired to cook and tempted to step off plan for something quick and easy.
Egg beaters and turkey sausage omelets with 2% shredded cheese - yummy breakfast for dinner option.
Cottage cheese "salad" - mix in diced tomatoes, cucumbers and green onions. A quick, easy and light snack or lunch type meal. Better if you let it sit overnight.
Snacks:
Sugar free Jello pudding snacks (even my hubs cannot tell the difference and NO Nutrasweet which is a good thing for me)
Veggies, of course, as well as cottage cheese and broth-based soups.
But my not-so-secret low calorie weapon of choice is egg white omelets. Mix up 3 egg whites with spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers, top it with salsa, and you have the most filling and tasty meal ever for fewer than 200 calories. It's like a little protein-filled miracle.
Potato, sweet potato, and plantain wedges topped with okra, spinach, beans, chilis and spices. Then cover with Greek yogourt and lowfat cheese. Bake 20 minutes and dig in! The Greek Yogourt helps keep it moist while baking, and it becomes ricotta-like.
Sandwich-ready tuna fish packs (90-100 calories), clementines (35 calories), cheese sticks (60 calories)...I usually eat the tuna and cheese at the same time and it feels like a little mini-meal
Great ideas everyone. I have to try the mashed cauliflower now My favorite low calorie snack is frozen raspberries mixed with a 35 calorie yogurt cup. It is high in fiber, really filling and takes awhile to eat since its so cold.
These are all great ideas. My favorite is a rice cake. A whole grain, white cheddar, Hy-Vee brand is only 45 calories. And I eat those like...I don't even know. They rock my socks.
I'm also an egg white omelet fan. I use the fat free cheddar singles (25 calories), 1/2 cup of all whites egg whites (60 calories), 1 ounce fresh mushrooms (10 calories), 1/4 cup rotel tomatoes (13 calories), and spray the pan with olive oil cooking spray (no calories). I'm learning not to like salt as much also to keep the sodium lower. It's very filling and only 108 calories.
Dinner is usually 4 oz. of salmon, chicken, or tilapia, or 3 oz. of shrimp with veggies and/or a spinach salad YUM!
I've even tried some of the veggie burgers (I think they're by Morning Star), and they are REALLY good with few calories. You can find light wheat hamburger buns too if you like bread with it.
I love the Morningstar Farms spicy bean burgers and mushroom lovers burgers. I put them on a Nature's Own hamburger bun with mustard for a total of 140-160 calories depending on the burger. Very filling. I also really like VitaTops muffins - chocolate-y, filling, nutritional and only 100 calories.
