Default Walking further than you have to

At my job, I always park off to the side so I don't have to deal with speed bumps in the morning, I get a lil bit of extra walking in, and so I can park away from most people. The other day, I was walking into work and some 12 hour shifters were standing outside. They asked me why I always park that way. I replied, "Habit and walking a bit more." *shrug*

One girl hollared at me, "bad for your feet and back!"

I walk about 10,000-17000 steps each night at work. I don't see how that scant 50 steps is going to kill my feet and back. Is this bad for my feet and back? Or is this due to the laziness of our society?

Your commute in a car is probably worse for your back and health than the walk across the parking lot. There is new research showing that sitting is incredibly unhealthy. Google "sitting" and "health" together if you want to get an eyeful.

I have a desk job. Given the results of the research I've seen, I have decided to put my laptop on a high box so I can stand while working. I can also kneel in my chair (reversed) and comfortably reach the keyboard to switch it up. The health risks of standing that I am most concerned about are varicose veins and swelling. I just ordered 4 pairs of support knee highs to help combat that. But even if I do get them, varicose veins are treatable, death is not (the research shows that sitting is strongly correlated with very serious health issues, including shortened life expectancy).

Great job getting in 10-17K steps at work! I have to spend 1-2 hours of my free time to add that much walking to my lifestyle. Don't pay any attention to the snide comments from your coworkers. Congrats on having a job that incorporates such a healthy amount of walking!!

humans have always walked for thousdands and thousands of years. if it was bad for our feet and backs then we would have evolved to crawl or something.

pathetic feeble nonsense from a lazy person and utter rubbish.

I can't see how it is bad for you when walking is probably one of the most recomended exercises for weight loss and for maintaining good health.
I like to park at the back of the lot where there are less cars(it's just so much easier to park) and walk. I find it amusing when there are cars circling a busy lot looking for a close spot and I just park in back and I see the same cars still waiting for a spot as I am walking in the door. :~)

Ya, I agree with Si!!!! (Well said!!)

I also park as far away as I can. We don't have that big of a parking lot where I work, but I'm in the farthest spot!

I always park far away, and I always have. One, I don't want people to scratch my nice car. Two, it takes less time to park and walk then circle and circle until you get a good spot. The extra exercise in walking is a bonus!

I agree with everybody else, only the laziest person would justify WALKING as BAD for you. That just blew my mind.

Right now we usually try to park near a cart park when we go places.. only because of all the kids, but we do try to find one that is further away from the entrance.

I googled it. The only negative response I got was that shoes are bad for your feet, and ugg boots are even worse.

And then a bunch of links about how walking is a good way to help with back pain, knee pain and foot pain. Unless you're wearing really bad shoes, I don't see how walking an extra 50 steps is going to hurt your feet and back

Bad for your back?! Maybe if you had heels on. Fifty extra steps is 50 extra steps.

Noooo noo. I was wearing my work shoes which are high quality (I started working there with walmart shoes...baddddd mistake. I got plantar facitious from poor shoes) and make my feet feel pretty decent most the time.

This is a person that's been working there for 15 years who does have a bum foot from what she's told me. So I'm sure she thinks she's looking out for me.

This is the same person who finishes at 6:30 when I'm struggling to get done and doesn't come over to help. Therefore I'm there till 8-9 am depending on how bad off my side is. I think there was only one time she's helped me was when she was forced. She's just selfish and lazy.
