I know alcohol is not allowed on the program, but.... I'm going on vacation and might want to indulge. What alcohol would do the least damage to the MRC program????
When I started the program the first time I was told to hold off on the alcohol for two weeks minimum. I was also told that alcohol was not on the program but if you were going to drink something, go for low/no carb. Things like whiskey have little or no carbs. So beers have 5 or so carbs but who drinks one beer? I would have drinks occasionally the first time I did this program and I still lost.

I began MRC in Aug 09. I have only drank on two different occasions since then, once of an entire bottle of wine, the other was 3 margaritas. And guess what, I still showed losses those two separate weeks. Don't get me wrong, I don't recommend it, but it isn't the end if you don't let it be. You sure don't want to make this exception often though!
I drank vodka the other day and still lost 7lbs but i know thats against the rules..but i just did vodka shots with diet orange soda LOL I only had a few..so im not sure how more would make it..i just knew i didnt want to do all the mixers and sugars..

I asked this question at my center too awhile back. My counselor said to stay away from Rum because Rum has a lot of natural sugars in it. I'd stick with vodka or whiskey, my bf drinks scotch and water and he's on the program. I had a couple of vodka cranberries awhile back and have had light beer. I think the key is to drink lots of water after you've had alcohol to wash it out of your system.
I had wine while on vacation a couple weeks ago and it actually made me feel kind of yucky. I haven't had any in about 8 months. Low cal diet and less weight on me, I guess I have really become a light weight in both senses of the word.. LOL...

If you're like me Ronnie, you likely see this at a blessing is disguise.
I have had a couple of friends that got together with me from time to time to "party", but since I began this plan, for whatever reason, those events have not occurred -- everyone too busy, too something. And while I miss those times with close friends, I do see it as a "God" thing. "Someone" knows what I need much better than I do to keep me focused and successful. I asked him for His help, and he made sure I got it. Thanks God!

I do view it as a blessing in disguise now that you mention it.. I used to be able to sit down and drink a bottle of wine by myself in an evening and not think twice about it.. After the beach deal, one glass is almost two much for me.. MRC got my drinking under control as well as my food thing so it was really worth the price.. I was able to deal with two potential problems at once!
Thoughts of adding a HNS to my dirty martini made me laugh! Actually, it is a good idea as I have heard it is good to have a little protein with alcohol. I started MRC 12/27/09 and have had drinks twice. Both times I did Metaquick for two days afterwards before I weighed in and both times I lost weight. I too was drinking too much every night before starting with MRC. Like a few of you I had no problem finishing a bottle of wine in one night. The funny thing is, this diet has gotten all my cravings under control. I don't crave anything, alcohol included. It was nice to go out to dinner, have a couple of drinks and then stop. They hit me pretty hard too and I had no desire to drink the next day. I used to also crave chips, do-nuts, pizza, nuts.
Every night before going to sleep I thank God for 5 things I am grateful for. One of these is always that my cravings are gone. Great thread!
Sorry to say that I'm a repeat offender. My problem isn't so much the alcohol but the snacking that goes along with it. Good luck, stay hydrated and be happy with your choices

You are right Susie! It is mostly the snacking that goes on with the drinking that gets you. Alcohol makes you want to eat and then of course you are knocked out of the fat burning state and then you have to start all over again.. It just isn't worth it in my opinion.. But to each his own..
When you are in 'fat-burning' mode and you drink alcohol, your body will stop metabolizing fat and metabolize the alcohol first. It also metabolizes it more efficiently than when you are not in ketosis. This is why it does not take as much alcohol for you to feel the effects. Be careful drinking while you are in ketosis (even if the sticks do not show it, we all are in ketosis if we are following the MRC diet - some centers use the sticks to make sure we are not too far into ketosis and risk burning muscle as well as fat). Once the alcohol has been metabolized, your body can go back to burning fat - as stated, drink even more water than usual to help rid your body of the by-products of burning alcohol and to counterbalance the diuretic effects of the alcohol.
A little vodka in a mixed berry HNS in a martini glass sounds good right now! Cheers!
