My mother is usually pretty critical, but unintentionally... she just doesn't choose her words carefully. She's battled ED's her whole life (she's 5'3" and 110 lbs today... which is the heaviest I've ever seen her in my life). Anyway... I was getting dressed to go to her house with my siblings today to have our Christmas gathering.

While I was getting dressed I ended up changing the outfit I was going to wear because I was sure there'd be a negative weight remark (my sister is 7mo pregnant and I was sure she'd make a comment that she thought she only had one pregnant daughter not two... that's the kind of comments she makes). So I change into a tank and cardigan. As I get up to get something when I was at her house she looks at me and says 'Are you losing weight again?' and I tell her yeah and how much. She replies 'Good. congrats- just be careful'. Totally caught me off guard.

I am so sorry you have to think comments like the pregnancy one will make their way to you! I am glad she said something you liked though. Mothers! WTH are they thinking!

Congrats! That's awesome. I have a similar story with my mother..she doesn't really make cruel statements in that way but she does things trying to joke that sometimes really hit a nerve with me. She will kinda poke my flab/belly if say i am laying on the couch if by chance my shirt rides up and my skin pokes out, and if I'm bending down/ in her way she will poke me in the lower back/ hips.. and usually make some sort of joke remark about my flab..although she is not one to talk. I usually laugh it off.. but recently I was pleasantly surprised when I made this commitment to lose this weight she has been more mindful of things, and has been complimenting me on a lot of stuff. She got me the food scale I wanted for Christmas too.

Be careful?

She said be careful because she's struggled with eating disorders her whole life (combination of anorexia/bulimia) and apparently my older sister was recently diagnosed with anorexia (although I'm not sure how true that is, I only first heard that today and haven't talked to her about it). She just doesn't want me to go overboard because our family tends to have addictive personalities and take things too far (drinking, ED, relationships, etc).

doesn't it feel so nice to have your worst critic give you a compliment about your weight?? My mother is also the fist to call me fat, and the last to comment on me looking good. recently she visited me and said i looked great. i was shocked, but very pleased!
