Default OT - Baby is freaking out, Mommies, help!

Hi Chicks,

Im babysitting my 3 month old nephew today. He's got a full belly, a clean diaper and he's had a good nap. He cries if I hold him, if he's in his playpen, in his swing, in the stroller . . . I've tried everything, he just won't settle down. He's usually pretty happy. Any suggestions?

I checked for a fever, he's normal, just mad!

Sounds like he needs to burb, probably got a belly ache. Put him high up on your shoulder, and you dont need to be too gentle when patting his back. Or you can lay him on your lap and do the same. Keep his head and shoulders off of your body (support him with hand) that pushes on his intestines a little, coazing up the burbs. You can also hold him like a football, laying on his belly across your arm, head in your hands and legs on each side of your elbow, walk around with him and pat his back.

Aww, it just happens sometimes. I usually just walk with him around the house so he is at least comforted on some leve. Or try taking a stroller walk. If you have a car and baby seat, that sometimes works wodners.

My little girl had some incidents like this, usually gas-related. Sometimes a warm bath helped her feel better, and holding her knees up to her chest.

It does sound like gas. If you tried burping him and it didn't work, see if his mom put some Mylicon (gas) drops in his diaper bag. My oldest lived on those for almost his whole first year!

Sometimes, they just get overtired too. Good luck! I have a 5 month old, so I can commiserate.

^I agree!

When my kids were babies and acted fussy like that it was usually gas. If giving them gas drops didn't help I walked around with them, tried to burp them, took them for a car ride, put on baby einstein, gave them a bath etc. to try and calm them down. Aww I sure miss that age! Everytime I see a newborn now I am always like aww I want another one!!

I agree with the others on the gas---my 4 month old who never cries hardly at all, it is usually because of gas or she needs help getting out a big-ole burp. If he doesn't burp on own try the mylicon. Also sometimes she gets cranky and is just plain fighting her sleep, even if she has already had a nap. So I just put her in her crib and giving her paci back to her and within 5 minutes usually falls back asleep. Hope you find the answers and all goes well. It can be frustrating for both you and the baby when they are not happy.

I feel like I should disclose that I'm not a mommy, just a very experienced auntie (and 4 time grand-auntie)

My daughter was a big time crier...just as we got past the colic...she developed seperation anxiety and cried if anyone other than myself was near her. We lived with my mom and my teenage brother. There were 4 adults that lived in the home and she would only go to me. sheesh! Maybe the baby just missed "hims momma!"
