Other ED Support Groups Besides OA?
Hi Everyone,
I've been looking for a support group for EDs online (like a chat kind of thing, group therapy type of thing) because I've been tackling some of my binge eating issues lately by journaling and I want to take it to the next level. I've done some searches online but I keep coming up with Overeaters Anonymous or groups that go by the 12 step principles like Eating Disorders Anonymous.
My problem with OA and others like it is that the core of the steps seem to focus on giving up control (to a Higher Power or the like) in order to get healthy. I have a real issue with this, mostly because I wasn't raised to believe this. I have no problem with the concept of a Higher Power, be it in a religious or spiritual or any other sense. It's the idea of giving up control to put it in the hands of someone or something else that I have a problem with. I was raised to believe that community and individual responsibility will heal and I can accept the idea of a Higher Power as an aid but not as a guide. Does that make sense?
That said, does anyone know of an online support group that has a base of principles and readings that I could work with as well as some kind of online chat that is more structured than a message board like this? This board is wonderful and has offered a lot of support but I think I need something a bit more structured at this point.
I hope I haven't offended anyone by my views of OA. I think it's a great group and I've sat in on a few meetings and enjoyed them. I'm glad it works for a lot of people. But the principles behind it are just not what I'm looking for.
