There are a lot of myths out there about water. Doctors are no less immune to them than dieters.
There is no credible research that shows that 8 glasses a day are necessary or even optimal for weight loss, clear skin, general health, improved sexual functioning, cleaning out toxins, and whatever else clueless women's mag journalists decide to claim next. (WRT to the toxins claim, there's some credible evidence that drinking a lot of water *reduces* the kidney's ability to act as a filter.)
Best practice: unless you're running a marathon, drink when you're thirsty or you need something to do with your hands.
And, liquid in other forms counts, too!
