Question Your 20 Foods?

I was just reading online that most people eat about 20 foods in rotation for the big majority of their lives. That is, regularly or frequently.

I thought at first, no way, I must have a more varied diet than that! Then I opened up a Word doc and got typing. My list started to slow down around 15, and I struggled to get 20 in.

The list was pretty horrifying, in my case.

Here it is, My 20 Foods:
  1. McSkillet Breakfast Burrito – McDonald’s (previously I ate McGriddles)
  2. Coffee with cream and sugar or artificial sweeteners
  3. Pizza – frozen or take-out, my main food
  4. Wine (sometimes beer)
  5. Cheeseburgers – McDonald’s
  6. French fries – McDonald’s
  7. Cheese – a huge part of my diet
  8. Crackers or chips
  9. Bread
  10. Jalapeno poppers
  11. Guacamole
  12. Spinach dip
  13. Cheddar cheese omelettes
  14. Bacon
  15. Pasta – esp. a box of Mac & Cheese with a can of tuna
  16. Fruit juices – grapefruit, cranberry
  17. Calzones – take-out
  18. Cookies
  19. Nuts – esp. cashews or macadamias
  20. Sushi

The glaring problem here is the lack of any kind of fruits or vegetables. Like, none. Unless they are combined with lots of fat (spinach in dip, avocados in guacamole eaten with chips.) There are a few okay things on here like sushi, but I was reaching for that one.

Wow. So, no surprise why I have this little Obesity problem.

How about you? Are you as bad as me? Or improving the healthiness of your selections? Or do you have really good choices?

This exercise seems simple but while I initially scoffed at it, now I'm really humbled and ... well, let's just say I wouldn't want my mom reading this list!

Earth balance is a healthy, natural, gluten-free, non-hydrogenated butter/margarine substitute. I dab it on vegetables and bake with it instead of butter (works really well and tastes great).

We quit eating fast food for the most part, every now and then we'll get Taco Johns. My husband is a great cook, that's my downfall! I have a hard time telling him no. I think I've come up with our regular 20, plus some
1. bananas
2. oranges
3. apples
4. wheat bread/trying to get into whole wheat
5. peanut butter
6. jelly
7. fat free yogurt
8. lean pockets/chicken, spinach, and artichoke variety
9. pizza
10. potatoes
11. pasta
12. green peas
13. corn
14. broccoli
15. steak
16. hamburger
17. mushrooms
18. onions
19. green peppers
20. eggs
21. cheese
21. tortilla shells
22. chicken
23. cheerios
24. raisin bran
25. skim milk
And with fishing and grilling season looming on us soon, we love our lake fish and grilling everything outside!
Plus fresh fruit and veggies again at decent prices!

Huh. I would suspect it's true for most people who don't think about their diets. Also I'm wondering when they say the same 20 foods, are you talking prepared or ingredients? For example, I eat an omelette for dinner at least once a week ... so is that a food in and of itself, or should I count eggs, cheese, onions, mushrooms (all of which are part of my regular eating patterns outside of omelettes).

Choosing to list raw ingredients ... here's what I eat regularly, based on my last weeks eating log.

eggs
yogurt
oatmeal
v8 juice
sunflower seeds
almonds
apples
oranges
onions
brown rice
beans
lentils
mushrooms
peanut butter
whole grain bread
turkey (deli slices for sandwiches)
chicken breasts
ground beef
broccoli
asparagus
summer squash (both yellow and zucchini)
watermelon (in season)
cucumber
baby spinach
mahi mahi
salmon
cheese (all kinds, but mostly cheddar and string)
cottage cheese
sour cream

So 30-ish items and that tends to be about the same combination of foods every week, although not always prepared the same.

Huh.

.

3. pizza
4. granola bars
5. oatmeal
6. bread
7. turkey
8. deli ham
9. doritos
10. pretzels
11. rice cakes
12. bagels
13. apples
14. pasta
15. american cheese
16. cereal bars
17. popcorn
18. cheerios
19. yogurt
20. chocolate

Oh yeah, I eat the same stuff over and over - but I definitely eat a huge variety of foods, I can easily list over 20 things and I'm generally counting by meals/snacks, not by ingredients. It was one of my healthy lifestyle goals to eat a wide variety of food - I try to "eat the rainbow" (red tomatoes, orange peppers, corn, spinach, blueberries, beets or cherries, carrots, yellow peppers, broccoli, plums, blackberries etc). I have completely given up "traditional" fast food (burgers, pizzas etc) so my way of life involves a lot of cooking! (I still eat stuff like Chipotle or sushi).

(I don't eat a lot of cheese, only because it has started violently disagreeing with me, it's a shame - I love cheese! I can handle a tiny bit)

1. everyday - berries for a mid morning snack. Whatever is cheapest - blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, red grapes.

2. Every work day (and some weekends) - afternoon snack of cut up vegetables - baby carrots, sugar snap peas, pepper strips (orange, yellow or red, whatever is cheapest) grape tomatoes

3. An orange almost every afternoon. If it's not orange season, I sometimes have a mango or an apple or a nectarine or sometimes a pomegranate. I eat watermelon a lot in the summer.

4, 5, 6, 7
I rotate these 4 breakfasts nearly every day:

Breakfast 1 - 2 kashi waffles, one with natural peanut butter, 1 with jam
Breakfast 2 - 1/2 cup of oatmeal, 2 spoons of apple butter, 2 tbs walnuts
Breakfast 3 - 1/2 cup Nature's path pumpkin flax cereal, fat free Greek yogurt with honey, 1 spoon of wheat germ
Breakfast 4 - 1 50 calorie whole wheat tortilla, 1/4 cup scrambled eggbeater, spinach leaves salsa

8-10

Lunch 1 - Spinach* salad with chicken and all kinds of vegetables, I love it with balsamic vinaigrette, dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds
Lunch 2 - Turkey sandwich on whole grain bread, spinach leaves, tomatoes, spicy mustard, red onion
Lunch 3 - Salmon (canned, wild caught) salad (lite mayo, dill pickles, red onions) on whole grain bread with tomatoes and lettuce

11. Tall skinny mocha from Starbucks

12. Starbucks biscotti

14. Pacific brand roasted red pepper and tomato soup

15. Chipotle chicken bol - no beans, tons of romaine, 2 scoops of pico, a little hot salsa, 1/2 serving of guacamole

16 -All kinds of teas - green, black, herbal

17. Honey

18. My standard sushi order - sashimi - 1/2 yellowtail, 1/2 salmon, seaweed salad, miso soup, umi hand roll

19-32

Dinner 1 - maple glazed salmon (wild caught, if possible) steamed broccoli (usually, sometimes green beans) brown rice
Dinner 2 - home made pizza - whole wheat crust (sometimes organic sourdough), spicy pizza sauce, a little feta, spinach leaves, sun dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, red onions
Dinner 3 - Chicken parmesan over spaghetti squash with spicy marinara and some vegetable
Dinner 4 - Home made chili
Dinner 5 - Home made pasta sauce with veggie crumbles, a little red cooking wine, fresh basil, sun dried tomato, spinach leaves over whole wheat pasta
Dinner 6 - BBQ chicken salad with chicken spinach leaves grape tomatoes roasted corn a little avocado, bbq sauce and a little fat free ranch
Dinner 7 - Very lean burger on a whole grain bun with spicy mustard, tomato, pickle, onion, spinach leaves, side of roasted potatoes or panko zucchini
Dinner 8 - Chickpea, leek, spinach tomato soup
Dinner 9 - Stir fry - tons of vegetables, some kind of protein, spicy sauce over brown rice
Dinner 10 - quesadillas, 2 50 calorie tortillas, with some kind of filling, usually spinach (thawed frozen shredded spinach, 1/2 can of low fat cream of mushroom soup, red onion, sun dried tomato, artichoke hearts, pine nuts, a little low fat cheese to stick it all together) or sweet potato/black bean/quinoa with a little sharp cheddar
Dinner 11 - roasted vegetables (tomatoes, red pepper, baby carrots, onions, sweet potatoes, beets, chickpeas, etc) over whole wheat couscous
Dinner 12 - huge pot of wilted kale with lemon and garlic served with roasted cherry tomatoes over wild rice (or brown rice or quinoa or whole wheat couscous)
Dinner 13 - grilled lamb chops, roasted sweet potatoes, some kind of green vegetable

* I eat some kind of leafy green evey day - no exceptions!

Random other stuff I eat but mostly the stuff I listed above:

Smart pop 100 calorie Kettle corn popcorn
Soy chips
Cliff Nectar bars
Freeze dried fruit (wish it wasn't so pricey)
Dried Granny Smith apple rings, dried wild blueberries
Pumpkin butter
Roasted squash
Roasted cauliflower
Hummus
Pita chips
White cheddar rice cakes
Nuts (walnuts, cashews, almonds especially)
Bananas - I love bananas, I wonder why I don't eat them more often??
Melon
Red wine
Margarita
Various yummy desserts - molten lava cake being a HUGE favorite, I like to try them at different restaurants for my weekly cheat meal.

Note to self, find some more yummy dinners to make.

This list would have looked a LOT different pre-July 2004. It would have included a lot more ice cream (huge bowl nightly with chocolate sauce), M&Ms (almost every afternoon), chocolate croissants, scones, muffins (a huge one for breakfast, EVERY day!), venti caramel lattes with whip (nearly 500 calories - EVERY day!), Qdoba nachos with everything, taco bell crispy tacos, Dominos pizza, Freschetta's four cheese pizza (almost every Friday night!), Nutter Butters, Pecan Sandies, Danish Wedding Cookies (addicted!), Hershey's Minatures (I used to take them to all my training classes "for the students" - ha, right!), thin mint girl scout cookies, McDonalds Value Meal #3 - quarter pounder without cheese super size fries, DQ chocolate dip cones, Outback's Bloomin' Onion (zoinks!), Krispy Kreme donuts (3 chocolate glazed at a time)...

Looking back, it is no mystery why I weighed nearly 200 lbs - I ate too much junk and didn't exercise. I told myself a lot of lies - it was genetic (my dad is heavy), I was big boned (a total lie, I'm a tiny bird girl), I have a "slow metabolism" (not true!). The only reason I was heavy was because I ate like crap. Now, I eat well and I am a slender, healthy person - I don't get exhausted in the afternoons anymore, I can keep up with my friends while walking, I can cut my own toenails without being winded, I love ME now more than I ever loved the food THEN.
