I LOVE Fage Greek yogurt. It's made up of milk, cream & active cultures...nothing else. Greek yogurt is strained so it's nice & thick...sort of like sour cream. I prefer the 2% version over the FF version & you can cook w/the 2% without it curdling/separating.
I mix mine w/berries or a drizzle of honey. It's also great made into a veggie dip or as a sour cream replacement topping.
I buy the Stonyfield Farm non-fat, plain yogurt and when it's almost gone I make more using the remains. It's pretty easy to make if you have a crock-pot or a heating pad and much cheaper than buying it. Usually I add some blueberries and a little splenda...yumm.
I second Stonyfield farms, because it has several kinds of active live cultures. When I can't find it I get Nancy's organic. Hate to admit it but I also like Yoplait Light 100-cal yogurts. I want to get away from the artificial stuff in it but for now it helps me get through a day sometimes. It does have live active cultures.
I like all the brands mentioned above actually! But, recently we've been "eating" GlenOaks Drinkable Yogurts. I get it at the local Safeway store. It is so wonderful on the granola we eat - (Flax Plus Granola Cereal with Pumpkin Seeds). As far as cultures, it has the regular: L. acidophilus, S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. casei.
I make my own. It's super easy and so much cheaper then buying 2-4 quarts of yogurt per week for DH and myself. I do have to buy yogurt for the starter though (I only use 2T per batch) and then chain yogurt four times before needing fresh starter (I freeze it in ice cube trays for this purpose.) I like Nancy's Organic Plain yogurt. It only contains milk, milk solids (dry milk), and cultures (5 different ones.)
All yogurt has active cultures. To make yogurt, you leave the milk stuff on the counter for a while. The bacterial cultures grow and help make the yogurt what it is. Many odd aged cheeses also have this.
This whole "pro-biotic" titling of yogurt really is just an advertising scheme
That said, I truly love Activia. Their ff yogurt still tastes rich and like real fruit.
I most often get Yoplait Source or Silhouette by Dannone. They're made with splenda and I find them too sweet, but there's only 35-40 calories in them (and 80 in ff activia.)
