Default Word Choice - Can/Can't vs. Will/Won't

A few years back I read/heard/saw something about how much of a difference it makes to use the word Will when asking a question vs. using Can. This was in the context of getting your spouse or kids to help out more. For example: Instead of asking, "Can you vacuum the floor?" ask "Will you vacuum the floor?" Essentially getting a yes on a can question only affirms ability to do the action. Will implies a commitment and therefore is more likely to actually get done. The best example that was given was would you rather be asked, "Can you marry me?" or "Will you marry me?"

I've been using this for years with the husband and even co-workers and I have to say it is quite effective. I thought I'd bring it up here because I've started applying the same concept to my weight loss journey and it is amazing what a little word can do. I can avoid the donuts vs. I will avoid the donuts.

Just a thought to share.
