Default Student Forum?

Hi 3FC mods!

I'd like to know how to go about suggesting a new forum/board for the site! I've been posting a lot in the 20-somethings board on a Back-to-School thread, and was wondering if there might be any plans in action for a student forum. I think it would be cool to have a place for people going to school (who aren't necessarily in their 20's!) who are trying to balance that life with weight loss / health and fitness to have a place to chat/ask questions.

Thank you.

New forums get created when there are too many threads/topics going in a different area, such that it becomes difficult to manage. For example, there were and are a TON of threads popping up on budget eating with the start of the US recession, leading to the "Shoestring Meals" forum. We have a TON of forums, and the policy on when to add a new one is fairly conservative.

You can always start a "Students" support group thread. The "Support Groups" forum would be a good location, if you want to avoid excluding non-20-somethings.

I second this idea ....for the fourth time? lol

With September creeping around the corner, I've been wondering how I'm going to keep my motivation for fitness coupled with the stress of school and all that comes with it.

I fifth this idea I really agree with this idea! It would be nice to have space for students as there are certain things that relate mainly to students.

Please see Amanda's post regarding this topic. 3fc is pretty conservative at this point about starting whole new forums. So, rather than seconding the idea, start a "student" support group thread in "Support Groups" and see where it goes.

Just out of curiosity - how did a group like Alternachicks get started? Was it from support threads for Alternachicks? I just can't imagine there was an overwhelming amount of "alternative" posts. I compare the student forum to Alternachicks because that group also seems to be more about an overwhelming amount of posters of a certain category rather than an overwhelming amount of posts about a topic. Just wondering!

The Alternachicks forum has been around for more than 10 years. It was a very active forum for many years, but it has slowed down considerably the last few years. It began for the reasons mentioned above - it was a huge group with far too many threads to keep manageable in a general forum and needed the dedicated space.

But that also brings up another reason why we hesitate to add forums. Sometimes what may begin as a very active group may eventually slow down. We have a very large number of forums, but there have been many forums that have come and gone over the years that you don't see. The goal is to prevent that because it rarely ends well. There are far more groups that are well suited for dedicated threads in our Support Groups forum than as whole forums.

A group must begin as a dedicated thread, then grow beyond what is manageable and also stand the test of time before a forum is created.

I hope that helps

I would love a Student thread! I would love to see how other students balance their schooling with life. Because I sure need some ideas!

Anyone is welcome to start a Student thread up. Again, if you don't want to exclude non-20-somethings, starting the new thread in "Support Groups" might be the best place.

Gosh, a student forum would be great. There are so many obstacles regarding going to school and trying to keep up with the diet it would be nice to see, but I understand 3FC's policy.
