Alternachicks at the movies

Okay, so I finally watched Blade III and thought it was okay. My friends kept telling me how bad it was but, hey, it is a popcorn movie :corn: and I wasn't looking for epic drama  And anyways, Wesley Snipes in leather is worth the price of admission to me ;)

I am currently waiting with baited breat for the new Batman movie with Christian Bale. I've liked him as an actor for sometime now and would like to see what kind of job he does. I keep thinking that this one has GOT to be better than the last few Batman movies. :crossed:

Anyone seen anything good, bad or indifferent lately?

peahen 06-02-2005 11:13 AM

NOt been to the cinema for a long time. The last thing I saw was the weeping camel (got very weepy myself!). However I rent DVD's reguarly.

Recently I watched an old favourite Jason and the Argonauts. Love it!

Last night I watched I Robot which was all right but very 'Hollywood'

I also saw Troy and that night in a pub quiz there was a question which I cannot remember but should have been obvious to those who had just watched the blasted DVD. Of course I forgot!! I recently saw Amelie too and thought it was charming.

Also another old fave the odd couple with Walter Mattheu and Jack Lemmon. That was great to see it again.

mauvaisroux 06-03-2005 07:33 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to watch I, Robot as I read the book years ago and I'm afraid that the "Hollywood" version would be disappointing.

mauvaisroux 06-05-2005 08:50 AM

We watched The Devil's Backbone last night - a ghost story that was quite well done, creepy enough but not gory.

FYI for those of you who don't like to read your movies - It is a Spanish film with English subtitles. :)

squeaker 06-05-2005 11:44 AM

I have seen quite a bit lately. (signed up for the movie in the mail deal)

Spanglish - Cute, mostly light movie. Enjoyable.

Phantom of The Opera - I have seen the stage production, but I LOVE the movie also. I highly recommend it.

Kinsey - eh. I was expecting more. If it wasn't for the great cast, it would have sucked.

Long Song for Bobby Long - I liked this one. Slow, but decent movie.

Assault on Precinct 13 - a bit too violent for my taste. But it does have Ethan Hawke. :D

Manchurian Candidate - I am sure it is a good movie, but I couldn't manage to pay attention enough to keep up with the story.

Ocean's Twelve - FUN! Silly, enjoyable popcron movie.

Forgotten - had potential, but failed.

The Clearing - I liked this one. Slow, but a good watch

Hotel Rowanda - An excellent movie, but I had a very hard time watching it. I probably couldn't watch it agian, but I am very happy I did see it.

I still have to watch Troy, Ladder 49 & Miller's Crossing.

lizziness 06-05-2005 01:53 PM

We've been having pretty bad luck with our movie choices lately.
Last night we tried to watch Sharkl Tale but we just thought it was awful. I suffered through Sideway. Seriously, I do not get why that one won awards at all. It was so dry, and I can't think of a single time when I laughed at all... it was a comedy right? Maybe not. *L* Also watched White Noise this weekend, on a recommendation. I found it fairly predictable and honestly don't care too much for Keaton anyway.
Started the third - or was it fourth? - season of Six feet under. My favorite show ever. I am really enjoying it.

Goddess Jessica 06-05-2005 08:24 PM

I saw Mad Hot Ballroom - a documentary about the ballroom dancing program in elementary schools in NYC. Freaking wonderful - you'll laugh, you'll cheer, you'll laugh some more.

ekka 06-07-2005 12:48 PM

I've been striking out on movies lately. The last one I seen and enjoyed (Fever Pitch) was about a month ago. Like lizziness, I also suffered through Sideways. I was totally expecting something more.

Looking forward to Cinderella Man and Mr & Mrs Smith later this week, though.

Ferret 06-12-2005 05:32 PM

Andy and I went to see the Lords of Dogtown on Friday night...the reviews are pretty bad for it saying there's no use for it...to be honest it wasn't my favorite movie, but if you are interested in skateboarding at all then it might be a good one to see...I enjoyed it and there was a bit part for Tony Hawke in there too LOL

squeaker 06-13-2005 09:41 AM

I liked Sideways. I thought it was cute.

I did see Mr. & Mrs. Smith this weekend. I was fun. Much better then I had expected. Plus It has Brad Pitt. :T

mauvaisroux 06-13-2005 04:13 PM

I'm probably going to see Batman Begins this weekend - hope this series can redeem itself with this one :crossed:

It really bugs me that the media is focusing solely on Katie Holmes being in this movie when the real star is Christian Bale and he hardly seems to be getting any press  he is a terrific actor and it is annoying that he is being largely ignored. Probably because of the Holmes/Cruise Romance

Speaking of Tom Cruise, I really want to see War of the Worlds too. :) I just love sci-fi movies, hope they do a good job of this one too although I can tell it is going to be one of "loosely" based remake/updates

Goddess Jessica 06-13-2005 05:24 PM

It was so funny to read your post Mauv because he was just on Fresh Air (NPR) today. Nice interview although just a bit weird. I'm looking forward to the movie.

I just rented Ocean's Twelve. Very cute movie. Not too deep but not boring - has a lot of sequel problems but nothing that prevents it from being a good vegging out movie.

--hey, I just thought, "How come vegging out usually involves food but not vegetables!"

Ferret 06-13-2005 07:14 PM

LOL good point! Maybe we should start a new trend ;) yeah right...

lizziness 06-14-2005 12:00 AM

I am also a Christian Bale fan and I CAN NOT WAIT to see it. I'm not much of a batman fan, but this one looks a little more interesting being more about batman then about silly villians. I would watch Bale in anything though.
Equlibrium was amazing, and of course American Psycho was so great. It still freaks me out and my hubby and I were the only ones laughing in the theater... i guess we've just got a sense for the dark humor.

Goddess Jessica 06-14-2005 09:40 AM

Bale talked about a movie he did right before Batman called the Machinist. It's a bout a guy who hasn't slept in a year. He lost 63 pounds for the movie (yikes!). It sounded very dark and interesting.

mauvaisroux 06-14-2005 11:21 AM

Yes, I unfortunately missed that one but I believe it was based on a Ray Bradbury novel. I am probably going to buy it on DVD.

lizziness 06-20-2005 01:11 PM

I had a Christian Bale weekend. I saw Batman Begins and it was awesome. There were a few things to pick about it, but honestly I think it's just me being picky and not anything bad about the movie. Overall it was very good, the most interesting and realistic one of the series.
I also saw the Machinist. It was very good. If you can get over the fact that he looks terrifying and like he's dying of cancer or something. The amount of weight he lost looks even more than 60-something, he was just barely there. But the movie itself was really good, kept you sort of guessing til the end.
If you like anime we watched an interesting one called Cat Soup. It has no dialogue, only sounds and music. It is very very strange, but kind of interesting. Nice and short. Definately not for children though.

lizziness 06-23-2005 06:07 PM

Watched a good one last night. The Safety of Objects. It has so many great people in it and the story was interesting. Kind of a sad one though, so if you don't like sad movies you may want to pass on it.

Eryn 06-24-2005 03:45 AM

I rented a really good movie last weekend, Ordinary Heroes , with Sigourney Weaver , Emile Hirsch , Michelle Williams . Very good , very sad . It was a good sunday afternoon , curl up in a blanket and cry kind of movie. The rain outside really made it even sadder. :(

mauvaisroux 06-24-2005 09:30 AM

Batman Begins was great! :D IMHO it was the best of the modern Batman entries. Story was good, character development was good, gadgets were good.

Christian Bale did an excellent job - I hope they use him again if they do another one. Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Rutger Hauer and Michael Caine were great in their roles too. Katie Holmes was okay but her role could have been played by anyone really. I don't dislike her but I just find her acting is so-so.

If they continue the franchise I hope the same actors play the same essential characters they really brought that mix of fighting evil, doing the right thing but having some wit and humour to the film.

In fact I would actually pay to go see this film again and I will buy the DVD for my collection.

I am going to see Land of the Dead tonight -Yahoo Zombies! :cb:

confusedcow 06-24-2005 01:22 PM

We liked Madagascar and the league of gentlemans apocalypse

mauvaisroux 06-25-2005 08:58 PM

Land of the Dead was pretty good :)

I am just about to watch Session 9 on IFC - hope it is good :crossed:

lizziness 06-25-2005 10:29 PM

I loved session 9. i thought it was thoroughly creepy in all the right ways. seriously loved that movie. :)
watched liberty heights and it was MEH. just kinda all over the place, it was like watching 3 movies in one, too many seperate plots. its a period piece and it has ben foster which is why i liked it. it's about being jewish in the 50's when integration in schools was happening and black kids were being brought into the schools and the whole "no jews, no coloreds" thing was still in a lot of places. it was interesting but kind of boring too.
we plan on watching the life aquatic tonight and maybe in good company. we'll see. :)

ellis 06-26-2005 06:10 AM

I really liked Session 9, too! I looked up the institution on the Internet... pretty interesting.

Goddess Jessica 06-26-2005 09:06 AM

I thought the Life Aquatic was good but I liked the Royal Tennebaums better. In Good Company was average but the ending was non-hollywood IMO which I found to be good (so I rate a little higher than average for that :) ).

I saw Spirited Away. It's anime. If you haven't seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it. Not only is the story good and the characters good, the imagination aspect is amazing. If you don't like anime, you'll still like this movie.

mauvaisroux 07-03-2005 10:04 PM

Watched "Team America, World Police" the puppets were great, but the movie...well some parts were funny, other parts were just dumb, so I would give it about a 6 on the entertainment scale.

Schatzi 07-04-2005 07:22 AM

Mauv, totally agree with Batman Begins... it's like the "franchise" has been totally reinvented..By far the best yet... and one of the best movies I've seen this year..
Saw War of the Worlds... A good attempt at a remake/reinvention..but fell flat for me. Tom " Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs " Cruise's acting was "glib" ..

Can't wait for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

lizziness 07-04-2005 02:51 PM

heh. tom cruise glib? i'm shocked and appalled. *LOL*

Land of the Dead was pretty good. Went and saw it last night. I liked Dawn of the dead better myself, but it was still alright.

Still haven't watched life aquatic or in good company. also have tha aviator sitting there waiting for us. we have been really neglecting our netflix account lately. I guess winter is more of a movie watching time.

Schatzi 07-05-2005 07:45 AM

I liked Dawn of the Dead, the original George Romero creation AND the remake with Ving Rames in it... When I was a kid, I had nightmares of being in a mall.. for the longest time I couldnt figure out where that was coming from..til I remembered the Zombies in the Mall LOL...

Aviator was very good... however, my nephew who is 21 didn't get it ( he had no knowledge of how Howard Hughes was.. his wierdness and contributions to film and aviation...) .

lizziness 07-05-2005 05:11 PM

Aviator was very good. I didn't know anything about Howard Hughes either, and I found it very interesting. I really enjoyed it.

Life Aquatic didn't make it past our 20 minute rule. We allow 20 minutes and if we both hate it, we are done. It was just too dry for my taste. I just couldn't stand it really.

We have been watching a show that I really like called House. It's new from this year I think but I just started watching it. It is excellent, I am loving it. Like it better than ER which one of my faves.

Schatzi 07-05-2005 06:14 PM

I love your 20 minute rule! Aquatic fell flat with me too... My husband liked the Royal Tennebaums, I could take it or leave it..
HOUSE RULES!!! I got a DVD attached to my Entertainment mag with the pilot ..Been hooked ever since..I love Hugh Laurie... he is fabulous in the role...
"Every week a new mystery...every week a new baffling case that only one team can solve. " Haha, although the structure of it is soo predictable.. It's a new obscure disease! It GETS GASP misdiagnosed! The patient gets worse! inject more wrong drugs, patient gets better oh.no wait! the patient is getting worse!than.... YES the correct diagnosis...LOL gotta love it... The snarky sarcastic witty dialog is what makes it!
I also like NCIS, CSI all those forensic shows-- we get BBCAmerica ..just love Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect, and Blood in the Wire ....

lizziness 07-06-2005 11:29 AM

I am really enjoying the show. I do agree that it's a bit set in it's formula. I have watched quite a few and have yet to see one where they didn't wind up figuring out what the **** is wrong with someone and fixing them at the last minute. But that's okay. Some day it will happen. *L* And like you said, the dialogue makes up for it.

I didn't like Royal Tannebaums either. In fact, I slept through most of it.

mauvaisroux 07-06-2005 11:53 AM

Yep, Royal Tennebaums was a bit long and pointless. Couldn't stand Gwynneth Paltrow's usual crappy acting and, although I like Owen Wilson, he just seems to play the same type of parts all the time.

Schatzi 07-07-2005 10:42 AM

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Gwyneth's acting either... pretty blah to me.. Can't say much for her baby naming skills either...
I just love Owen's accent/drawl... Can't wait to see him and one of my favs Vince Vaughn in the Wedding Crasher...I saw Stiller's Starsky and Hutch and Vince just stole that movie.. he was tooo funnie!

Lizziness... I fell a sleep on Sleepless in Seattle...no lie! LOL

ellis 07-07-2005 11:54 AM

Just saw The Astronaut's Wife. I don't know why, but I really can't stand whatsisname. Johnny Depp.

mauvaisroux 07-07-2005 04:15 PM

I love Johnny but hated the Astronaught's wife- I found it really boring

We just got some movies on DVD that we have to watch...Nothing like the previously viewed DVD blowout at Blockbuster! I picked up Sideways for $6.00 which is less than the price of admission at the theatre! :D

Schatzi 07-07-2005 04:24 PM

I love Johnny too! But Astronauts Wife wasn't so good...I think he's best when he's in those quirky roles or shows his childlike side..

Here's one of the few good lines in Astronauts Wife......
"Men are like parking spaces: all the good ones are taken, and the available ones are handicapped." ;)

I haven't seen Sideways... seems to have gotten really mixed reviews here on "AlternaChixFlix"!

ellis 07-07-2005 04:37 PM

oooh... that's a good name for this thread, Schatzi! "AlternaChixFlix"... I like it! :D

What was that line in Aliens (was it 3?) when they were told not to use guns... "What are we supposed to do? Kill them with offensive language?"

lizziness 07-08-2005 06:08 PM

Schatzi - honestly I fall asleep all the time. basically if it's not compelling and it's dark in the room i'm a goner. and sometimes all it takes is that it's dark. *LOL* Hubby insists on no light, windows all have to be closed all lights off, so it's dark in the room, i've got a comfy chair and if the cat sits on me and is all warm - well that just seals it for me. I'm such a dork.

I watched "In Good Company" and I really liked it. Topher Grace played a very similar charachter as he does on That 70's show, but he was believable and lovable even as a jackass. I really liked this movie more than I expected to.

Schatzi 07-08-2005 08:56 PM

Hey Lizziness, I call myself "DorkyGirl" LOL! Our living room is soo comfortable, between the loveseat and couch we have 4 recliners.. and the coffee table has rollers hidden in the legs..so if its in our way we just give it a foot shove.. Sounds wonderful doesnt it.... BUT DH has Surround Sound wired ... (I call it Theater for the Deaf) , so just as I start to nod off, 9 times outta 10 A bomb, or a car chase scene sounds like it is happening right there... UGH ..hate it...

Here's one of my dorky girl moments: We are watching HERO, a japanese flick with subtitles... I tell DH to turn up the sound because I can't hear them...DUH ... I don't understand a lick of Japanese :chin: ( I think DH keeps me around for entertainment!)
