ellis – book organizing is actually fun for my geeky self. They’re first separated into: graphic, fiction, poetry or non-fiction. Then alphabetized by author. The non-fictions also by theme – because it just makes sense to keep the books on philosophy, popular culture/TV, body/eating, and feminism with other books on that theme.
1000 unorganized books, ellis? Do you want me to come and help you???

Mette, I love organizing mine, too! I've got low bookshelves along the side wall of my living and dining rooms, and they're full of my "good" books. Classics, great works of fiction, etc. I've got mine organized first according to type (philosophy, sociology, Canadian fiction, etc), and then by author. Although not alphabetically... I have to work around the height of the shelves.
Once in a while I just sit on the floor in front on my shelves, pull books out at random, read a few lines, and go down memory lane.

ellis – I do that too! It’s like I organize my life and sense of time around books and reading (when I’m trying to figure out when something happened, I’ll automatically try to figure out what I was reading at the time – it’s like: “Oh. That was the summer I read An instance of the fingerpost”, or “that was the fall I read Secret History”). It’s like I’m having love affairs with books.
I seldom remember ex-boyfriends as fondly as I do the books though.

What was the name of that place, Mauvais? I'll be certain to avoid it.

Ah... "It's like I'm having love affairs with books." That's IT, Mette! You're so right! I've already told my family that I want to be buried with my favourite books. (they've been told to throw in my Nancy Drews as well) And they are to include a flashlight, extra batteries, and several bags each of Bridge Mixture and Tostitos. Just in case I revive.

You've inspired me to build that bookshelf. I'm going to measure the space and pick up the wood for it today. It's going to hold a lot of my cozy mysteries. I don't put those in my living and dining rooms, because I want people to think that I'm an egg-head who only reads intelligent literature. If they were to see my collection of easy-to-read mysteries on the second and third floor, they might think less of me.

Not sure- but it is really tiny and it seems to just do take-out, there is no seating. It is close to Kowloon market but on the other side of the street- I think it is close to the place where you go for your steamed buns (Gloucester Bakery?)

I am so upset about Rick James. I saw him on his comeback tour in 98. Must have been one of the best concerts I have ever seen. sigh! I will definitely have to get his new album when they release it.

Well, DS17 is thrilled with U of Guelph, and wants to go there. I liked it too, so I guess that would be fine with me!! They have a GORGEOUS arboretum there!
I'd be taking my books there to read every chance I had!!!

Ellis-HAHAHAHA!! I was going to say DS17 was probably the good choice for your daughter, since he may stay in Canada. BUT, his plans are to do his undergraduate work in Canada and then go to England, Scotland or Ireland for his graduate work!!! (And I was hoping that Canada would at least keep him CLOSER!!!)

Blugrrl-YUP!! DS14 wears his heart on his sleeve and is very sweet. When he isn't insisting that he knows better than me, his dad, and the rest of the world that is!! (Or yelling at us and slamming doors!!)

ellis – great that you got inspired to start building your bookshelf! It sounds so nice to live in a big house, have lots of space and books – and not think about that you have to carry all the books out of there the next time you move. I move around a lot *and* I like to have a lot of books: those two do not mix well!

I think classes are starting up next week for me – and that is really way too early. But I’m going away for the weekend, visiting family, so hopefully that’ll be nice.

Mette, I bought the wood and brackets. And then the toilet on the third floor broke, and that has become our current project.
Yes, I always wanted a big house, and I do love it. When we bought it, it had been divided up into a triplex, with a two-bedroom apartment on each floor. My sister was going to teachers college at the time, so we offered her the second floor apartment at a low rental. She now owns her own home, but we decided to keep her apartment as a rental. The apartment is completely separate from our part of the house, and we have our own stairs at the back of the house to go up to our bedrooms on the second and third floor. (plus there's a kitchen and craft room in the attic) It's great having the extra income, and like I said, we really don't need the space. In fact, I could use a cleaner in here as it is! I turned one bedroom into a walk-in closet for DH and I (got my sewing machine in there, too!), and turned a bedroom on the main floor into a big walk-in pantry! The kids have a table with stools in there to do their homework at. Geez... just talking about it makes me cringe. No wonder I'm disorganized!! Too much space, and TOO MUCH STUFF!!
And yes... I am NEVER moving again! You're so right... it's such a pain moving all those books around!
