Alternachicks at the movies
I just came back from seeing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkabahn - It was great! A little darker than the first two but very enjoyable. :)
|
I saw Young Adam today. It was very good, but very dark. Also pretty depressing. Ewan McGregor was wonderful as always, even if he is not a good guy in this.
|
I saw a movie , lol very unusual for me. Kill BIll. and am now eagerly awaiting kill bill2. i just have to wait for them to come out on dvd, because i am one of those people that likes to watch movies at home. the pause button. and too cheap to drive 45 minutes away to watch a movie.
|
I saw Super Size Me today - it was GREAT!! Highly highly recommended. In a strange way, inspiring to me because I saw a parallel between Morgan Spurlock's self-imposed harm to his body to MY self-imposed harm by regaining the 50 pounds I had lost 1999-2001.
It's full of scary facts, sly humor, and laugh-out-loud humor too. It's a real eye-opener on how so SO many people eat fast food on a daily basis. 40% of America's meals are eaten at restaurants or are take-out. Wow. If current weight gain continues in the USA, 1 in 3 (yes 33%) of children born in the year 2000 will come down with diabetes during their lifetime. HOLY #$*&%! Really, I think anyone struggling with their weight or who eats fast food frequently should see this movie... |
Berkshire : i had heard that it was a good movie, and real inspiring. gonna have to check it out. glad to see you around here again. ;)
|
Okay I saw both Kill Bill last weekend and the new Potter flick. Liked Kill Bill and am going to check out 2.
I was disappointed in Potter/Azkaban. I loved the book, but they cut too much out of it to get the ending in there. I am curious to see how the get all of the Goblet of Fire (pretty long book) into a movie, especially if they shorten it like they did Azkaban. Azkaban was 15 min. shorter that Sorceror's Stone and 25 minutes shorter than Chamber of Secrets. Oh yeah, my boyfriend got almost NO screen time in this one. Tiki. |
Tiki, your boyfriend is...? ;)
Saw Harry Potter on Saturday. Really enjoyed it, but definitely missed the parts that were cut out. Read Book 3 over four years ago, so not too sure of what was cut out, but I could feel that parts were missing. Must admit that though they were pretty, some of the scenes (like Harry flying) could have been shortened to include more "meat" of the story. They did a clever job of it, though, and I was thrilled to see that the actor doing Sirius did a fantastic job, as did the one playing Lupin. Very well done! Berkshire, where did you see Super Size Me? Is it out on video yet? I would love to see it! |
Tiki's boyfriend is Hagrid :D
|
I can't wait to see Harry Potter. And I really can't wait to see Saved! and The Day After Tomorrow.
Last night I finally gave in and watched Kill bill vol 1 with my husband. Didn't want to watch it, can't stand Uma, but I was surprised and I really enjoyed it. Can't wait for the next one to come out on DVD. Tried to watch an older movied called "Veronica Guerrin" but I just couldn't get into it, didn't even watch it all. I found it to be dry and boring and the Irish accent's were terribly. |
By the way, I heard a rumor there will not be any more Harry Potter movies because the kids are getting too old and it's hard to make them look young enough to play the parts for much longer. I hope it's just a rumor...
btw, when is the next book coming out?? Anyone know? I'm ready for it. |
They are making a 4th Harry Potter movie :)
|
Beachgal,
I went to a theatre to see it; The Triplex in Great Barrington, MA... which is a very cool little art-house cinema place most of the time, but during the summer they usually toss in a few blockbusters to suck in the tourists (like Harry Potter, Shrek 2, both of which are on my list of to-sees!) I think "Super Size Me" is unfortunately not a movie that is going to be played at a lot of mall Super 12s or whatever - which is too bad because I think this is where it really NEEDS to go  Great movie though. I bet it will be out on video in a couple months... late August maybe? |
Cute Mauv!
My boyfriend is Snape. I just love Alan Rickman. The Goblet of Fire is due out Nov. 2005. I also can't wait for book 6. Tiki. |
Oooh! Alan Rickman is a heck of an actor! He just nails Snape perfectly!!! My DH says that he has been in several other movies and is the "bad guy" in all of them. The only one he could remember was Die Hard. It's been so long since I've seen it that I don't remember him in it. Is that correct?
Thanks for the info, Berkshire! I wish we had cute movie houses around here! I know they have several in Ithaca, but it's a heck of a drive just to see a movie. *sigh* So I'll have to wait until it is out on video. But you have a great point...it should be in the mall! |
yeah, Rickman was the bad guy in Die Hard and the bad guy in Robin Hood. That's the movie that i fell in love with in.
Tiki. |
yes, well I am afraid you will have to share him tiki....I like him too :D
He has a voice like buttah.... |
Shrek 2 - Excellent movie, lots of adult humor !! :s:
|
I loved Shrek 2! Saw it right before surgery. I've watched so many movies since surgery I can't even remember them all.
House of Sand and Fog - tear jerker, but very good. Ben Kingsley is a great actor. Empire of the Sun. OH MY, watched this the same day as House of Sand and Fog. Cried too too much that day. My House in Umbria - good movie, but different plot than what I expected. The Rundown - light entertainment. The Rock is just great to watch in action, though. Fliritng with Disaster - Ben Stiller movie. Funny! I had never even heard of it, don't know why. Laurel Canyon - Christian Bale, Frances McDermond. Also a good movie. Kinda kinky. Just a little. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm. I'm blank. I hope to feel up to going to the movies next week. I can't wait to see about 10 movies! |
Someone TOLD me about the House of Sand and Fog and it depressed me so much I had to tell them to shut up and then had to play a high speed hip hop CD just to shake the blues. I'm terrified of that movie.
Tiki. |
I watched a good movie last night, though to me it was very scary. It was called "The Magdalane (sp?) Sisters" It's a true story about this place in Ireland they would send women who were unwed mothers or had in some way made their err.. maidenhood questionable. I don't want to give it all away or anything. The scariest part was probably not the movie, but the documentary about the real women that was on the DVD special features. It was really good, but so very sad. Because it was true. and they didn't close the last ones til 1996! Very sad scary story.
|
btw, Glad to hear there will be a number four movie.
Though I haven't seen number 3 yet. Hubby is so stubborn. |
Awww Tiki! I understand how you feel. If I had known, I probably wouldn't have watched it.
Speaking of House of Sand and Fog - if anybody here has watched it, I have a question about 'something that happened' in the movie that I wasn't sure about how it happened, without giving anything away. If anybody cares to discuss it, let me know! |
Saw The Chronicles of Riddick on Saturday night - fun action film, and Vin Diesel ain't too hard on the eyes either ;) good popcorn movie :corn:
|
Since we screwed up the movie times, My mom & I saw Raising Helen, instead of Stepford Wives.
Raising Helen was pretty cute. Plus I love Kate Hudson. and John Corbet is just adorable! |
I finally managed to go to an actual theater and saw Shrek 2!! Went during matinee though. Cute movie!!! Love the donkey and Puss N Boots!! :smug:
|
Noodles-I could listen to Antonio Banderos speak to me ANY day ...ALL day and night....purrr to me baby!!!!
|
Ohh me too... Yummmm yummm...purr for me baby!! Hahahahaha!
|
Lizziness, I saw The Magdalene sisters a whle ago. Duble bill with Angela's Ashes. Both films made me want to smack priests and nuns afterwards! (sorry!). As you say these places were kept open until thelate 1960's. Also, in England at any rate, and I would imagine Ireland too, they used to put girls who "got into trouble" (what, by themselves!!) into mental institutions. There was a series on TV in UK about the British and all about sex. It featured an old lady who had been in a mental institution because she "got herself pregnant" - she was a maid and was raped by the head of the household. There were sad stories like hers and some funny ones - the weel to do lady who married beneath her and was presumably cut off by her family. Used to having servants do everything, the next morning after the wedding she waitied for breakfast in bed. So did her husband!!!! Most women knew nothing about sex , or cooking it seemed. Their mothers' answer to both was - "You will find out when you are married!"
|
Yeah, I know what you mean. I am not religious, or if I am it certainly isn't that particular religion, so it was just so shocking to me. Hubby was "raised catholic" and caught the last part of it was was apalled to learn it was a true story.
Some of the interviews on the DVD were from real people, and they were so sad. This lady was going to marry a soldier, but he got sent off to war and she was pregnant, and the place kept their letters from each other, put her kid in an orphanage and kept her there for years. She didn't find him again until she was an old lady. And another one went straight from orphanage to magdalene house because she was pretty and she would be tempting the boys if she stayed there. Give me a break! The "you'll find out" method was still used for some families. My mom pretty much got the "you'll find out" treatment from her mom. Didn't know how to do laundry or much cooking or anything til after she was married. And she was a child of the 60's! Scary. But she turned out okay... eventually. :) |
For those that like imports I watched an interesting one last night. A Japanese film called "Suicide Club" I'm really still not all that sure if I understood what happened, but maybe that's the point. :) It is certainly amusing, if nothing else. Though I don't think I'd buy it, or watch it again or anything. It was certainly not Ringu or Battle Royale, that's for sure. Though I think that is what they were going for...
|
Cool liziness, we have Battle Royale I and II! We just bought a couple of other Japanese films but haven't watched them yet - there is a place near me that sells them at reasonable prices :)
|
Here's the movies I've seen lately...
Shrek 2-very good, bit nothing can beat the first one! Along Came Polly-I haven't seen anything that's good with Jennifer Aniston in it, and this was no exception. I did like the "sharted" scene... Mean Girls- my daughter (10) made me take her and it was very, very good-I was so mean in high school, so I can relate! |
mauv- my hubby is japanese obsessed, but he's managed to suck me in too. I would love to see Battle Royale 2, but can't seem to find a copy. Really want to buy the first one. We've been getting the manga which are interesting, but I'm just not the comic type of gal i guess. He enjoys them more than I do.
|
Just watched 50 First Dates. it was great. we actually watched it two nights in a row. lol. first our date night. ( oh the life of married with kids, date night is rent a movie :p) then the next night my SIL wanted to watch. I laughed my butt off, but also had parts where i teared up.
|
Hub and I actually went to a movie Friday in a real theater with the stadium seating!! A treat for us. Course it was matinee fare. ;) We saw The Day After Tomorrow... Just watching that movie made me freeze!! http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies...haracter08.gif IT was nice walking out into 95° weather after seeing that. :sunny:
|
Recently saw "Day After Tomorrow" great special effects but quite far fetched. I can't find the library in NYC in a car in the daylight, but Denis Quaid(love him) finds it in the movie in sub zero, with the city buried under snow?
"Chronicles of Riddick" Ok for what it was. Would much rather see Vin driving driviing a fast car or as XXX. "Stepford wives" I enjoyed Bette Midler and her gay side kick, the rest of it was just stupid. "Dodgeball" I know alot of people don't like these stupid type Ben Stiller movies, but I gotta tell ya, it really was funny. When you hear everyone else at the movie howling with laughter it makes it even more fun.. |
Hub and I went and saw "Farenheit 9/11" last night...
It was sold out. It had sold out every ticket for every showing. I just happened to get lucky. When we got out there was a line around the corner waiting to get in to see it. My take on the movie?? Humm... I was really choked up. Everyone in that theater was crying...GROWN MEN included. And the whole theater applauded at the end. It was weird...I don't want to say much because I am non-partial. I think it was a good movie, yes. But I will also go see the other movies that come out that are anti-Farenheit movies & other documentaries too to see what they have to say. I like seeing the variety out there and keeping an open mind on everything and letting people form their own opinon on what they believe, not what someone else wants them to believe because they think that their way/belief is the right one. Probably why I don't really vote or follow politics or organized religion much...I'm un-biased. I could never argue with a democrat or republican or any party for that matter. Just not my cup of tea. The only thing I probably would argue about is pet rats. Because I use to be one of those close-minded people that thought they were disgusting creatures... :( One thing I found funny/cute was that there was a buncha senior citizens in line to buy tickets to the movie "White Chicks." hehehehe... ;) |
Maybe they were in the wrong line up Noodles
I am going to see Farenheit/911 for sure! I've have always like Michael Moore's films including Bowling for Columbine but I do take things with a grain of salt too. It is funny because a lot of the things he said in Bowline for Columbine were things that my friends and I have been commenting on for years - like the way the media and large corporations control a lot of things or manipulate the public - same thing happens up here in Canada and don't even get me started on our politicians up here  I am so glad that Farenheit is being released because people need to see that there are different points of view and that we aren't aware of a lot of things going on behind the scenes. I will also go see the other films that are coming out because I would like to see there point of view although I wouldn't really describe them as anti-Farenheit - just as having a different perspective on the situation. As Noodles said - it is good to keep and open mind about things :) |
