I finally watched Donnie Darko- great film-really enjoyed it!
Actually I really enjoyed American Psycho but I think you would understand it better if you had lived through the excesses of the 80's. |
Whale Rider
I just saw an Independent Film called Whale Rider. I am not sure if it is in limited release or not. But if it is playing by you, it was wonderful. The story takes place in New Zealand and centers around a young girl who's twin brother and Mother died in childbirth...her brother's destiny was to save the seafront village based on some old cultural belief about the first born boy.....guess what, that is almost what ruins this village. This young woman was amazing, the movie filmed in New Zealand the scenery was spectacular, the story was great and the acting was perfect!!

Donnie Darko is awesome. I always heard people talking about it so I decided to buy it. It was great. I had a hard time understanding it, because it was late and my phone rang at a crucial time, but once I watchied it again I loved it.
If you like that movie, you should see the Virgin suicides, Igby goes down, and the dangerous live of the altar boys. I own all of them and always tell people to give them a chance. I have a huge dvd collection....and I am slways looking for some great movies.....any suggestions???? |
I saw Pirates and sat fixed to the screen while watching Johnny Depp do his thang. <sigh>
I recently saw Freaky Friday with Jaime Lee Curtis and oh shoot...drawing a blank on her name. She was also the girl who played on the remake of Parent Trap. The red head. Anyway...my SIL and I watched it (with my son and her brother looking over our shoulders..lol). It was obviously geared toward the younger generation, but I enjoyed it. Of course, I think I've seen every movie that JMC has been in--including that box office flop--Drowning Mona..lol |
I rented Spider (Gabriel Byrne, Ralph Finnes), and boy was that an odd movie. But I enjoyed it.
I also watched "Life of David Gale", which was ok. And Piglet's Big Movie, which was just adorable. |
I can't wait until Friday- we are going to see "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" starring Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp - double the eye candy :T I loved the previous 2 movies in the trilogy - El Mariachi and Desperado.
|
Anything with Johnny Depp in it is something on my list!!
I saw Thirteen last weekend with Holly Hunter....very depressing, but excellent movie, Holly Hunter should get a nomination for this one! |
Johnny Depp.....YUM! have loved him since 21 jump street. :)
|
"If you like that movie, you should see the Virgin suicides, Igby goes down, and the dangerous live of the altar boys. "
I LOVED all those movies! I really enjoy watching Kieran Culkin - I find him to be amazing. I don't know why. Same with Jake Gyllenhaal. Just great actors, both of them. I had to rent everything I could find that they were both in. I am having a hard time finding anything new to watch - or rather, new to me. We've been watching some interesting Series on DVD - like the BBC's Darling Buds of May and HBO's 6 feet under. oops - gonna be late for work. anyway, any suggestions of anything along those same lines, ctagmire? |
It is a television series, but it is one of the most innovative on the air right now. Rent the series "24" with Kiefer Sutherland. I cannot watch the series week by week, I get too stressed out, I can't wait an entire season, so I want until September and rent the DVD's so that I can watch them consecutively--plus no commercials. If your not familiar with it, it is filmed in "real time" which means that it is 24 episodes and takes place over the span of one day or 24 hours.
It just came out on DVD on the 9th. |
Quick question for the movie buffs -
Any thoughts on the new Batman movie. Christian Bale (American Psycho) as Batman and Christopher Nolan (Memento) directing. I am thrilled. I think it has the potential to bring the series back to the Tim Burton/Micheal Keaton level. |

Yeah Squeaker, I read about that this morning. I think Christian Bale is an excellent choice! He is a really good actor- he has a lot of intensity coupled with a lighter side that makes him a most likable villain. I think he will be great as the heroic but troubled Dark Knight. He was great in American Psycho, Equilibrium, Shaft and Velvet Goldmine.
I totally hated the last couple of Batman movies :p so much so that I would not pay to see them and had the misfortune to be at someone else's house and forced to watch them. Worst casting ever - Uma Thurma and Aaaahnold in Batman and I could have lived without Robin and Batgirl too! I notice that the more characters they have in the films the worse the plot - it seems that the stories go in too many directions. It worked better in the first one where there was one bad guy + one good guy + one screaming and completely useless love interest bimbo= not too bad a film  IMHO ;) Although I wasn't that enamored of Michael Keaton in the role. I actually will pay to go see this one if Christian Bale is in it and it it is directed by someone other than Joel Shumacher. :D |
let's not forget Danny Devito as "The Penguin" :)
|
Yeah, that was bad too. :p
|
Rowan-LOVE 24!!!!
|
Christian Bale is an awesome choice, he is dark with a quiet manner. The only thing I ever miss is the Michael Keaton dry humor, the quirky smile. I think I have become a Batman snob. I tried to watch the old campy TV version the other day and I am like, WHY ARE THEY RUNNING AROUND IN DAYLIGHT? WHY IS THE FASTER WAY TO RUN? and they really look like the ambiguously gay duo. Back to the comics kids.
Miss Chris |
Lizziness, did you see GhostWorld? It was a sort of dark humor comic book movie also. I don't think I would have liked it if it weren't for Steve Buscemi. Kinda depressing!
I saw Dickie Roberts last weekend. My son HOWLED through the whole thing. He loved it, but it was a little too much for a kid his age! That is, of course, why he loved it! I didn't laugh a lot...but the end with the real child stars was worth the price of a matinee admission! At least for somebody my age (35). Haven't been to an R Rated movie in a while...have to get a babysitter for Cody first. As soon as we get one, I'll go see Once Upon a Time in Mexico. SWAT was ok....A gratuitous sex scene with Michelle Rodriguez and Colin Farrel would have been appreciated, however! I saw POC twice, loved it as much the second time. Whew.... Saw Freaky Friday with my son, which was fun, because I saw the original as a girl with my mom. The new one didn't have the girl as quite a slob as Jodie Foster played in the first one. I remember she had dirty feet in the first one. Very strange that I remember that! There are a LOT of movies coming up that I want to see. We see about anything PC and PG-13 (the son), and we usually rent R movies for home. But I don't watch anything scary. That is when my husband and sister get Date Night! |
My list of "to sees":
Underworld One Upon a Time in Mexico Cabin Fever Jen - I remember the original Freaky Friday too! Isn't this the 3rd version of it? |
I'm anxious to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Love anything with Depp. I want to go to Blockbuster and have a Depp-a-thon soon
Batman.. I have a hard time envisioning Christian Bale as Batman. I thought his role in Empire of the Sun (as a kid) was incredible! What an actor! But then as an adult, he turned me off a bit by starring in the WORST movie in history, Velvet Goldmine! He's ok, but he still needs to redeem himself, lol. |
Suzanne- if you get a chance rent the movie Equilibrium = Christian Bale redeemed!
|
Um, I really liked Velvet Goldmine. And I swear it had nothing to do with Ewan McGregor completely naked. :T.. oops... I mean
|
Oh please! It was overdramatic, poorly acted, and had way too much going on. Was it a drama? musical? mystery? love story? It tried to be all of the above and succeeded only in being confusing. I watched it 3 times before I got it  So I gave it a fighting chance!
Will check out Equilibrium, thanks :D |
It also had 3 hot guys, and 70's glam rock. :)
But I also like a number of movies that most people don't. |
You aren't alone, I know several people that liked the movie!
The music was pretty good! |
Drooly postie.
OMG, I am SO gonna rent Velvet Thingy. Christian Bale's in it? And Ewan MacGregor's in his BD suit? Ruff, ruff!! Christian Bale is so sexy. That part in Little Women (oh, stop GROANING!!) when Jo lets him down and he's trying not to cry...I want to shout (but Ramon would laugh too hard), "Forget about that tomboy hussy who marries the wimpy guy with a dumb accent! Come to me, come, and cry into my breasteses!!" :hyper:
Can't wait to see Underworld. I'm going tonight, for sure. It'll be my reward for trying to use the Gold's Gym elliptical machine for the first time! New gym membership! But, I digress. Want to keep drooling. I'll post a gushy review tonight after tasty Underworld. |
Underworld ROCKED ME FLAT. Well, what I mean by that is that it's a really solid, dark, operatic, ***-kicking, bloody, vampires-vs.-werewolves movie. Juuuust the way I like it. Cool plot, all the girls are teensy (naturally), the men are sexy, buff and very, very evil (rowwwr). This is not a real movie review. I can't give a damn about those. Just opinion, and my opinion is that it's the SHIZNICK, BABY, YEAH!!!!!!!
|
I saw Underworld last night too Cerise! I really enjoyed it, I think it is one of the better vampire movies I have seen lately. Less cheesy and campy than most.
I loved the vampires clothes, sigh, why can't I run around dressed like that all the time? I thought the effects of the werewolves changing were quite well done. One thing that bothers me is that I have read several reviews that say it is a Matrix rip-off. It seems that every movie that has a dark, edgy theme, and action is now deemed Matrix-like. I am sorry but the Matrix owes a lot to several other movies so the critics can just sod off! I am sure this is a film that movie goers will enjoy and the critics will pan. |
Oooh glad to hear Underworld is good. Suzanne and I will be seeing it one day soon. I saw Matchstick Men today. Nicholas Cage did a REALLY good job. The movie wasn't as exciting as I had hoped, but I had expected a different 'kind' of movie. My son loved it (and contained himself when they showed NC's butt *are you listening Suzanne?*) because Nicholas Cage has tics in the movie, which is the only reason he wanted to see it. My son has Tourette's Syndrome and he saw the trailer where NC said he 'obviously had a lot of tics' and Cody has looked forward to seeing somebody else with tics on the big screen ever since....
I wish they showed Sam Rockwell's hiney... Can't see Once Upon A Time In Mexico yet until I get a babysitter..it's R! |

Tannish and I think it was firm! He was in a hospital gown. It was nice, though!
I saw Once Upon A Time In Mexico today. Not what I expected! I expected more serious drama, and this was Quentin Tarantinoish. I dunno, hard to describe. But I still got Depped, so I'm happy. |
Jennifer --
My 13-yr-old daughter has ADHD. We went to see Secondhand Lions this weekend, and she was nuts about it. To be honest, she wanted to see Underworld, and we did see Dickie Roberts last weekend, but she loved it. I dragged my husband along, and to find a movie that a dedicated chick-flick, scifi fan, a teenager, and a dedicated romantic war movie kind of guy could get together on was pretty awesome. Haley Joel Osment has hit that adolescent awkward stage, and I'm so glad he was in this movie because he was so totally his age -- albeit beautiful and talented. Robert Duvall sort of chewed the scenery, but once again I was totally awed by Michael Caine, who can underplay anything. I can't believe it -- my first post on Alternachicks, and here I am talking about a family movie, but my definition of alternative includes loving support, and this is what this movie is about. |
Did a mother/daughter thing yesterday, and watched Session 9. (my daughter had already seen it) I enjoyed it, and we had a lot to talk about afterwards. We also looked up on the Internet the asylum where the movie took place. Veeeeeerrrrrry interesting.
|
Session 9? I'll have to look that up - I hadn't heard of it.
We are seeing Second Hand Lions this Thursday. Glad to hear it was good. Thursday is 'mega-party' day. At Cody's school, they do these horrible fund raisers that the kids can sell items for the school to gain admission to. If they sell more items, they get things like laser tag, and a money vaccuum thing. They really exploit the children. They bring them in the gym and show them films and reel them right in, and get them caught up in the hype and the sales pitches. These are children! And some of the kids don't have English speaking families that can take their books to work, and some kids just have uninvolved parents that CAN take their books to work but don't, and some aren't allowed to sell door to door (like mine) and their family can't afford to buy the crap they are selling to 'buy their admission'. So, in short, I complained big time last year, and this year Cody came home and said he got fundraising books, but no way were they going to use him, he wasn't selling anything. Good for him!! I wrote a note to his teacher and told her that we were boycotting the Mega Party fundraiser as we all thought it was an exploitation of children, and that raising money for some of the kids shouldn't be done at the expense of others. It is bad to hear about the crying children that don't get to go because they didn't sell anything, while they watch their classmates go without them. How can first graders sell, for instance, if their parent's don't help them? It isn't their fault...anyway, Thursday after school is the Mega Party, so at 3:00, Cody will go with my husband to the local childrens museum for a couple of hours until I get off work, then we're going to the movies and out to dinner. I'm all for helping the school, but not this kind of deal when there is a company making a ton of profit to make kids cry. Where were we? Oh , the movies! I think we are going to like the movie - looks more like a 10-year old movie then the ones he has seen lately! Has anybody heard about the new Bill Murray movie? I can't remember the name of it. I read that it only opened in 183 theaters... |
Ellis- what is Session 9 about? Who is in it? Is it a newer release or an older film?
Jennifer- I'm glad you and Cody stood up to the school :bravo: I can't believe they use that method of fundraising - it is so unfair to use the kids like that and very hurtful and disappointing to kids who can't achieve the sales  |
Mauvais, it's an older film. Well, a couple of years old. It's a creepy thing. Here's a review for it...

And we'll have grilled cheese during Benny and Joon, chocolate during Chocolat, a case of Coke for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ;) and a box of Kleenex to catch the drool during Don Juan de Marco. (oh, the look in his eyes during that entire film.... ) Is anyone going to see Kill Bill? Looked interesting! Oh, and the new Loony Toons Back in Action movie looks good too, lol. |
Yeah well, even in Pirates of the Carribean he looked hot -gold teeth and all- he can swashbuckle me anytime!
|
Man, making kids fund-raise makes me so hot under the collar. I HATED selling door-to-door.
That Bill Murray movie is "Lost in Translation". I can't wait to see "Kill Bill" and "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"! |
Jennifer-I agree COMPLETELY with you about the fund raisers. I try NOT do them. The few times I've given in they have cost me more than they have saved me if you get my meaning!!! DS13 just came home with one today (magazines) so I'm dealing with it now too.
Ellis-That movie looks good!! |
