The only reality show I watch is Survivor, and my reasons are... I don't know!! I call it my tacky-side. But my 13 year old daughter and I have watched all of them together but the first, and my husband and 15 year old son used to SNEER at us, and now they watch it too.

I get so attached to the characters, afterwards I miss them.

I'm working on my 2nd last assignment for the Fiction Genre course I'm taking for my Library Tech diploma. I'm really ready for this to be done. I'm pooped.

Back to work.

L

Sojourner 03-28-2003 12:15 PM

Yup!

I love Survivor... and I watch American Idol whenever I remember its on. Survivor is sort of addicting, isn't it? Quite the drama. I'm sure I'd be kicked off the island immediately! Of course, I would never make it on since I don't have a perfect body.

RubensMuse 03-28-2003 12:22 PM

Ever was Fear Factor? Oh watching that one sometimes can really make you lose your appetite. One week they were eating sheeps, cows and fish eyeballs. It was gross.

Lamorgan 03-28-2003 12:52 PM

Noooo...... I flipped by and saw people in a vat of magits or something and that did me in....

the wind is here ... I hope my only pair of black jeans do not blow off my clothesline and fly away...

L

mauvaisroux 03-28-2003 01:03 PM

Well Sojo, in the other Survivors sex and body image did not play as big a factor as they do in this one  Those girls, Jenna, Heide and Shawna, make me sick :p They are a horrible representation of women and an embarrassment to women everywhere! Not to mention lousy role models for young girls.

I find them dumb, shallow, vain, and completely useless - 5 hours to start a campfire! Sheesh! ( and not thinking of the kerosene ??) and lazy until Deana organized them all. Obviously those 3 were never girlscouts or went camping as kids.

I think Shawna is a whiny cry-baby or that she was faking it to get out of doing chores. People who don't believe the dead come back to life should have seen her when the men showed up at camp  Her sudden "recovery" was nothing short of miraculous!

I can't believe that Heide and Jenna stripped for peanut butter and oreos! Boy those two come cheap and I wonder what their parents were thinking when they saw that :o

I hope Deena makes it to the final 4 or that she wins-it would certainly being a triumph of brains over bimbos if that happened.

The young men aren't much better-they behave like a bunch of hormonally charged teen age neanderthals who have never seen women in a bikini before! Again I say Blechh! :p

:soap: Well that is my rant for today

ellis 03-28-2003 02:00 PM

Well!!!!
I just think that anyone who watches Survivor is totally dumb and shallow!! ;)

I watched it once about a year ago, and I thought, "Man, this is COMPLETELY addictive... I could get right into THIS!!" :D
I have no idea when or where it's on though, so I haven't been able to feed my addiction. And PLEASE, don't anyone tell me!! I DON'T WANT TO BE ADDICTED!!!

was that rude? Did I just put my foot in my mouth? Again. I AM teasing... you picked up on that, right?

mauvaisroux 03-28-2003 04:40 PM

Ellis- :p :p :p to you!!!

Actually, I find Survivor to be an interesting study of interpersonal realtionships, coping skills and a commentary on society. (gee, too bad we don't have and egghead smiley with glasses and a graduate cap to use  )

Plus it is also a guilty pleasure of trashy entertainment:devil:

ellis 03-28-2003 05:40 PM

I LUUUUVVVV how you justify watching these programs, Mauvais.
You kill me.

ilovemyluckycat 03-28-2003 08:54 PM

I think survivor is stupid!

The women on there are way too good looking to be real. Anyone different is "token". And please, like I really believe the first group ate rats or something like that!

Just think in 20 years it will all be history.

I almost never watch TV, I am not trying to be smug, please forgive me, I simply do not enjoy TV.

Sandi

mauvaisroux 03-28-2003 10:04 PM

Well Sandi, I don't think any of the women on any of the Survivor's were good looking, some of them got by on big boobs but that was about it. I have seen much better people standing at the bus stop or at the mall  and a lot of them were made really unattractive by their behaviour!

I'm not offended by your comment and can agree that most of the current tv programming is stupid. I don't mind Survivor but the glut of reality tv shows that followed it are getting worse-dumb and dumber- I can't watch any of them, especially those bachelor/bachelorette, Temptation Island, Married by America things. Are people that desperate to find someone or are they that money grubbing that they would do anything on tv just to get some cash for it? :p icky!

ellis 03-29-2003 05:05 PM

Everybody needs a little "stupid" in their lives. ;)
When I'm really depressed and sick I re-read my Nancy Drews. :D I certainly don't consider myself stupid, but a little cozy no-brainer when I'm feeling crappy is good for me. Plus I get to relive my (otherwise miserable  ) childhood.

Sojourner 03-30-2003 01:37 AM

Adios!

Bye chickies... I'm leaving for Cancun in the morning! I promise to not eat my way through the trip and will even try to exercise a little while I'm there. Can't make any promises though about the amount of calories I may consume in the form of tequila... !!

ellis 03-30-2003 07:19 AM

Have a wonderful time, Sojo!!!
:grouphug:

Lamorgan 03-30-2003 04:10 PM

Ohhhh! Nancy Drew!!! Off topic a bit, on Thursday at work someone donated a pile of Trixie Beldon books, all from my generation, and I'm coming home with the whole pile. :) They are too old to add to the collection at the Library.

I was in love with Jim as a very young teen.

L

ellis 03-30-2003 05:18 PM

Lamorgan, I've got a bunch of Trixie Beldons, too! Anytime I'm depressed and have my nose in a book, my DH will jokingly say, "What are you reading, a Trixie Bixie?"

Lamorgan 03-30-2003 09:16 PM

I read a lot of youth fiction. There is a lot of really well writen youth lit out there and it's usually a bit quicker read than adult stuff.

A great book I've read though was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and I'm reading The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. It's about life in biblical times through the eyes of the women.

Must be off, my book calls.

L

Lamorgan 03-31-2003 09:20 AM

Ugh. There is this disease outbreak in Toronto, and I'm supposed to head in to Mississauga next weekend to spend the night with my friend Randy. Then I re'd an invitation to an art show of a friend which would take me even closer to the east end of T.O. where hospitals are closed and people are wearing masks...

But POO! I want to go.

L

Lidian 03-31-2003 10:55 AM

I love Nancy Drews too, when I am feeling fragile especially...and I love People magazine and Us and I take them out of the library to save $ and so they do not pile up upstairs (cuz I have a lot of old Shape mags up there that I DID buy, and I can't throw them out, I love them!).
I love travel books too.

Lidian

ellis 03-31-2003 11:37 AM

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only adult who will still pull out a Nancy Drew on occasion. I always wished she would dump that Ned. He's so ... wishy washy.

I've got a lot of Shape mags, too... can't throw them out. I keep thinking I'll go through them and make a collage to hang on my fridge. :D

Ruthxxx 03-31-2003 11:51 AM

Well I have a collection of Vogue Sewing and Threads that will never be pitched. My dream books!
Harry has Gourmet Magazines from the 1950's!

ellis 03-31-2003 12:03 PM

I'll bet those Vogue fashions are right back in style.
This year, it's essential that you have a couple of "hostess outfits". Start sewing, Ruth. If we can't be thin, we can at least be elegant.

Lidian 03-31-2003 02:13 PM

I collect 1950s and 60s knitting/crochet pattern books and cookbooks as well...not that I knit very well or am up for more than making a scarf or two! But maybe someday...my mother was enormously talented at knitting and sewing, which may be why I have trouble getting myself to practice now. My elder DD age 9 1/2 is just like her grandma though - she can crochet anything and any pattern! So she likes the pattern books too.

Ellis, I agree entirely about Ned. HOW many years is he going to be at Emerson College anyway? And does he even have a major? In the Nancy Drews with the Hardy Boys they do hint that Nancy and one of the Hardys (I forget which one) kind of like each other, but that nothing ever happens. I d*** well wish it would!

Lidian

Lamorgan 03-31-2003 02:41 PM

I like Martha Stewart because of the lovely photo shoots, and once and awhile she really does have a practical idea! I like country living, and weight watchers mag and canadian house and home... Usually I get mine from the library too, but I purchase my WW mag.

I collect... old pyrex! and coloured chunky wineglasses. And last week I bought this bizarre suit at Salvation Army for 3.99 - a mid calf legnth fuzzy, spackled purple skirt and matching jacket. Must be mid- 80's. I'd never wear them together, but the skirt looked pretty interesting with black knee socks and a black long-sleeved t-shirt last week...

Funk-i-fies the library a bit! :)

So tired, had insomnia last night until 3:30 am and I got up at 5.

I hate it when you look at the clock and almost have an anxiety attack about getting to sleep.

Til later ~ Lam

ellis 03-31-2003 02:50 PM

Lois, I'm the same... when I wake up during the night I just LIE THERE!! Wondering, "Should I get up... should I try to sleep for the next hour and a half... "

DH and I went to the Sally Ann on Saturday... I found a few pair of work-out pants and some T-shirts. And some books, of course. :D

Goddess Jessica 03-31-2003 06:45 PM

Youth Fiction I love:
Island of the Blue Dolphin -- by Scott O'Dell
Bridge to Terabithia -- by Katherine Paterson
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret -- by Judy Blume
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing -- by Judy Blume
Sweet Valley High Series (I know! Brain Candy) ---- by Francine Pascal
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe -- by C. S. Lewis
From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg
Anne of Green Gables -- by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Little Women -- by Louisa May Alcott
The Chocolate War -- Robert Cormier

ellis 03-31-2003 07:29 PM

I LOVE C.S. Lewis, Jessica! I've got all of his Narnia books. Plus a bunch of his "adult" books.
And a ton of Lucy's.
And a ton of Louisa May's.
The Chocolate War... that sounds so familiar. Perhaps it's simply that "chocolate" sounds familiar.
I'm afraid I was the only girl in my grade 4 class who refused to read Judy Blume. ;)

Amyjo01 03-31-2003 09:05 PM

I was looking for both of those Judy Blume books not too long ago for my DD... they were some of my favorites. Love CS Elliot also... but Tolkien and the Dragonlance Chronicles are my absolute favorites.

My DS has been reading the Dragonlance Books since he was about 8 where DD has this thing for Lemony Snicket Series and love the classics- Mark Twain, Little Women, Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables (these are books I can't bring myself to read). I am just glad that they love to read, give them a book and I have a little peace and quiet.

Now If I could just get into Critical Care Nursing and Community Nursing the way I could get into a Hmmm lets say Stephen King Novel... I could be making straight A's :)

Amy

ellis 04-01-2003 07:38 AM

I recently read a few of Alexandre Dumas' books. I have a friend in the Ukraine, and he informed me with disdain that they are "books for a child". I guess they don't read The Bobbsey Twins in Ukraine/Russia.

mauvaisroux 04-01-2003 09:37 AM

Youth fiction:

S.E. Hinton:
The Outsiders
That was then, This is now
Rumblefish

Susan Cooper:
The Dark is Rising
Over Sea under Stone
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree

(maybe not youth, but I read this when i was about 12-14)

Madeleine L'engle-A swiftly Tilting Planet
Kurt Vonnegut- Breakfast of Champions, Slaughterhouse Five
George Orwell- 1984, Down and out in Paris and London

Ray Bradbury:
R is for Rocket
Golden apples of the Sun
The Martian Chronicles
October Country
Dandelion Wine
Farenheit 451
The Illustrated Man
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The Halloween Tree

Lamorgan 04-01-2003 12:41 PM

Anne McCaffrey Dragonriders of Pern series is one series I love... and recently I read Hominids and Humans by Robert J. Sawyer, really good! Even my 15 year old liked those two.

As a child I read anything, and everything.

My 10 year old is reading The Chronicles of Prydain, by Lloyd Alexander. A patron inter-library loaned them in from another branch and I brought them home for Foster after she returned them, he's on book 4, so they must be good! We have lots of Narnia, but eldest son is the only one who has read all of them. My daughter found the battles to be a bit much.

Gathering Blue was great...

:)

Lam

Goddess Jessica 04-01-2003 12:49 PM

Oh I love Ray Bradbury! Almost any fantasy or Sci-fi.

Ellis - Dumas is one of my favorite writers (I read him as a kid but never thought of him as children's fiction). The Chocolate War is a great book on the conformity of the non-conformist group. Very Catcher in the Rye.

mauvaisroux 04-01-2003 01:04 PM

In high school my favorite book that we studied in English Lit Class was A Tale of Two Cities. My favorite French Literetarure class book was Le Petit Prince or The Little Prince (english language version) and I still own a copy of it. I love Alexandre Dumas too!
