Losing weight at 50
Hello, I am a new member, just joined a few minutes ago. I have a great deal of weight to lose and have some physical limitations to boot. I hope I can find like-minded people here to share this journey with. I find my need to lose this amount of weight a bit overwhelming. I have rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalga that will limit the exercise that I am able to do. I need to go from 291 down to 160 ish and the ripe old age of 50!
|
Welcome! Most of losing weight is diet. If you can get your diet in check, the weight will come off. As the weight comes off, your activity will increase. Good luck to you. Keep a positive outlook. Focus on what you CAN do. What you CAN control.
|
Rhonda,
I just turned 57 nov 1st and i have lost 39lbs and 26 1/2 inches since July of this year. I went to the Metabolich Research Center Weight loss center and they helped me lose weight and inches and showed me how to eat healthy and not be hungry. There are alot of forums on here so take it slow and don't get overwhelmed. I use www.myfitnesspal.com to track all my calories and there are some wonderful women my age that have lost over 100 lbs just by counting calories, you should check it out. good luck and keep in touch! :carrot: |
Hello and welcome. I am losing weight at 54! I also am disabled but I have been successful in finding exercises I can do and am journaling what I eat for my once a month weigh-in with a dietician. I have found this forum to be very encouraging and am glad that I joined.
|
Welcome! You can do it with diet alone. I'm 62 and it took me about 10 months to lose 50 pounds but I did it with diet alone. I just recently started to work on fitness, mainly because I feel so much better now. I'm walking and taking yoga classes. Best of luck with your journey. This forum has been a great help since I discovered it a couple of months ago.
|
Good luck on your journey. Definitely you can reach your goals, age & physical challenges may enter into the equation but people lose weight successfully at all ages and with all kinds of physical challenges.
And yea, diet is the first thing to tackle and organize and as your health improves with weight loss (it will), you could consider adding walking and/or other types of exercise into the equation ... or not ... it is your journey, have fun. You'll do 'er! |
G'day Rhonda Marie,
I am a newbie to and just signed up a few minutes ago, I have the same conditions as you and find it hard at times just to function, with the fibromyalgia, I have about 25 kgs to lose which is about 50 pounds I think, I am finding that short walks and my stationary bike are a start to my exercising plan. I have been on these forums a few times over the years and have always met some lovely ladies and always found motivation and plenty of feedback and help. I know you can do it, it just takes time and a matter of finding what works for you. Good Luck on this journey :carrot:  :) |
I´m a newbie too and found this forum only yesterday. I need to lose 9 kilos and to keep that weight.
It´s not the first time I start a weight loss project. Christmas 2009 I started walking, swimming and doing yoga and lost 18 kilos. I´ve gained 9 kilos back because of job cuts and financial stress. I´ve started drinking more water and eating more during the day and cutting down on my night eating. I went on a walk today and will continue tomorrow. Best of luck to all of you. :) |
The best thing about 3FC and this forum? Finding out that I'm far from alone. It's not that misery loves company. It's that instead of getting the hurtful stares and doctors inane comments of "you need to lose weight" people are willing to share their successes, their challenges, and their support. Ssssoooooo glad I found this site.:)
|
I'm turning 50 in just over 6 months and find exercise challenging due to pulmonary issues, so I'm right there with you! I am pretty new here myself, but I will see you around the boards, and will be happy to share our successes and challenges together!
|
Good evening ladies! Thought I might join you. You sound like a great group. I was 54 in August. I always find great moral support here. Hope we have a good journey together.
Kathy |
Good morning all, hope you have a wonderful day!
Betsy, I love what you said. Maybe that is the biggest key, to be able to share in a positive environment that lifts us all up. Made my day, girl! :D Off to the treadmill. I should go thru my videos to see what I even have. It's been so long I've forgotten what's in that drawer! Kathy |
I'm in. I'm 60 (and a little more). I believe it is possible to lose a significant amount of weight at our age. It's also possible to do it with limited ability. I have a spinal cord injury which has resulted in chronic nerve pain and partial paralysis. I can still walk, though with pain so I do pool exercise and work out on a recumbent bicycle. It isn't much but it's more than I could do before I started.
Along with others, I recommend calorie counting, but I'm kind of a nerd so it works for me. I've heard others complain that it's too much work. Regardless of the method, it's got to be for you and no one else. These boards are here for support when you need it and help celebrating your successes. Good luck! |
I'm 62 and need to lose around 250 pounds! But for right now, I'm focused on the smaller goal of getting down to where I was before the holidays. As you can tell from the posts, watching calories will result in weight loss. Getting a buddy to go down the path with you will help a lot. Setting a number of smaller goals doesn't make it seem so overwhelming. And for me, logging in and reading the posts every day has been wonderful. It's let me know that I'm not alone in this! Good luck.

Hi all,
I'm 52 and want to lose 40 lbs. I started induction about 2 weeks ago. I can't wait until I feel good about the way I feel and look. I'm trying to set short term goals of approximately 2 lbs per week/week1/2. I'm glad to have found 3Fc's, but also a 50's plus forum as well! Rob |
Oh my, I'm so thankful for this group. I am on a "counting calories" diet and I need to lose 40 pounds. I know I can do this. All your comments have encouraged me to tackle this!! I'm going to also try to lose 2 pounds a week like Rob. We can do this!!!
Breezy10 |
Hi Breezy, 2lbs a week is doable! (is that a word?) Let's go for it.
|
Hello everyone
 Just thought I would check in, I have been awol for awhile, I hope everyone is doing well and in good spirits, I have been busy studying, trying to get the old brain working, at 55 I didn't think study would be easy but I am getting there. On the weight loss journey, it is going slow but I know I can do it just need the motivation, I have lost 1kg that's about 2lb in the last 2 weeks not a bi amount but at least it is a start, it will be a long journey ;) but I am sure I will reach my destination on this train called weight loss, I just need to keep going. Well I wish everyone a lovely and productive day :)
Take care, Julie |
weight2lose---where do you report your weight loss? Can we do it in a regular thread? I noticed the one that began about a week or two ago but I didn't know about it or I would have joined it. It would be fun to start up two different groups and see who can lose the fastest...lol...well, maybe that wouldn't go over very well...but then maybe there is a place to report weight loss and I just don't know about it. When I have time I'll look around more....yes, let's go for it!!!

well, weight2lose--let's just post how we're doing here. Would that work for you? I'm doing good today. I'm doing a calorie count type of diet because it works the best for me. And I've found when I count calories I am more aware of what I'm actually eating....it's no wonder I need to lose 40 pounds! I've not weighed yet so can't report on that yet. But WE CAN DO THIS.
What plan are you doing? Who will join us? All are welcome!!!! Tell us how you are losing... |
Hi Breezy,
I'm doing low carb, because it's easy for me to do that. Last thing that I need is an excuse on why something can't be done - and I'll find that excuse! lol I'm down 5-6 lbs since 1/2/13. I also posted a before and after photo online. This photo caused me to get on a diet once I was shown the photo: http://s1300.photobucket.com/albums/...nt=before1.jpg Very humbling. In six months time, I dropped 60+ lbs to this: http://s1300.photobucket.com/albums/...nt=Image17.jpg I'm using everything that I can to keep me motivated. Rob |
Wow--good for you to lose the weight. last winter I lost 35 pounds but put 10 of them back on...maintaining hasn't been easy. I only need to lose 30-40 pounds now!
You can do this weight2lose--and although it isn't easy to keep the weight off, it is doable. I like low-carb diets too--they work pretty well. Hang in there!! |
G'day all
Just dropped in to say G'day ;) and thanks again for the welcomes, I have lost another half a kilo about 1 and a bit pound :carrot:, so slowly making a dent, this is going to be a long journey, but I have done it before I can do it again, and this time make it stick :dizzy:, I was checking out your photos weight2lose and very inspirational and motivating they are. Well lets keep this train rolling, and take care all
|
Hi Misty, I agree it's doable. And its working! Maintaining can be tough. You hang in there too and make sure you come back here!!
Julie - great news on your weight loss. Progress is incremental, so a bunch of small improvements makes for long term success! I'm glad that you found both photos helpful! The 'before' photo was difficult for me to share, not very flattering. But it's out there and will remain there until I reach target, at which point it's coming down for good! |
Good Morning,
I have been reading through your posts and thought I would join you. I am 61, started doing Wonderslim last August, by December,I had lost about 18 lbs. After the holidays,I realized that I had not been totally committed to the program. For some unknown reason, I had felt that if I was 1/2 in I could continue to lose weight. You would think at this age and dieting most of my adult life, I would know better :o. Anyways, I re-committed at the beginning of the year and this time I am doing it right.:carrot: I look forward to reading your posts and getting to know all of you. Oh, I am down another 4lbs since my restart. |
Welcome aboard, Irish51. Looks like you had great success last year, and you're off to another excellent start this year. This is a great board that you found. I joined just a little while ago and I'm glad that I did.
Rob |
Another chilly day in New England, single digits this morning. I hope everyone is staying warm and staying on plan!
Rob |
Morning!
Thanks for the welcome, Rob. Cold here in the midwest, also. Hurry spring..... |
G'day all
G'day everyone :)
You guys are lucky you have cold weather, it is a scorcher her downunder lol, hope everyone is well, and staying focused, I have had a good day, even though it is my 10th Wedding Anniversary today, I was good and didn't over indulge Take care, stay safe and be happy  |
I'm envious, Julie! It's 9 degrees this morning in the northeast of the US. You were VERY good not indulging on your anniversary. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary as well.
How is everyone doing? Rob |
Hi Everyone!
I turned 50 last spring, and although I'm not a newbie to 3fc, I hadn't been posting here in a while - so last time I was here, I still squeaked into the 40s forum. :( But now I'm back, just got re-started the beginning of the month. Looking forward to meeting everyone in this group, and hope everyone is having a great weekend! |
Hi April and welcome back. I'm 52 and just joined this month. I look forward to reading your posts.
Rob |
Welcome back April. I am 61,older than most here, but looking for support and trying to lose the weight.
I weighed in this morning and lost .2. Yep, 2/10 of a pound in a week. I have gone over my food journal, and the only thing I can see, is that I don't think I am eating enough calories. Very discouraging, but I am Not going to quit. |
G'day everyone
Welcome April, you sound like me I am a returner to, I was a member of the 3FC about 2 years ago and went awol for a while and have now returned. I wish you well on this train to weight loss, and I look forward to being there with you on your journey. It is a lovely day here downunder, we have a nice breeze and some rain today, a break from the heat. I am doing well, and I hope everyone is staying focused and in good spirits. |
I had a very good day. I was bummed since I only moved .5 lbs,(enough to get me to 220) but not what I was expecting. I got a low carb woosh this morning to 217. My goal is to be at 215 for my progress pics for next week.
Hope everyone is having a great day! Rob |
Good morning everyone! We got a few inches of snow last night and it's now about 20 degrees, so no lunchtime walk for me today!
Hope everyone has a great, on plan day! |
Hi April... Yep, on plan and getting more motivated each day. I'm going to attempt a game of full court basketball this upcoming Sunday.
