~~December Golden Girls~~
We are about Fitness and Quality of Life after 50...
We are about Fun and Friendship after 50... We are the Golden Girls... There is Value in us There is Power in us There is Wisdom in us And Laughter.... We are a rainbow of unique wonders, There is love in us. (poem by Dorothy Holmes) Tell us a little about your life, family and goals. What keeps you motivated? What is the best thing that's happened to you since you passed the 50 mark? 60 mark? Friends laugh, cry and stand by each other, we'll be that to you! |
Good Morning! I feel better today thank goodness. I think the combination of Tylenol Cold and Mucinex did the trick. Thanks for asking. At least it feels like it has helped this morning. We'll see how I feel after I get back from the mammogram this afternoon.
The inspection on this house was cancelled this morning and will be rescheduled for later this week. Still haven't heard about the house we made an offer on. He is an out of state owner and you would think since the house is sitting vacant he would at least answer with a counter or something. We will wait for a bit but don't have a lot of time to wait. It is only 43 days until the closing is scheduled for this house. This dance gets tired! Well, I need to go this morning. I imagine I will need to do things in a s-l-o-w mode today. Everyone have a good day!!! |
So we are getting ready for December! Can't believe how fast the months are passing by! I woke up early this am and finally got back to my stretch class. My favorite instructor was filling in and I got a really good stretch. The other gal is fine too but this one is just really special to me. Then I did 30 min at 7 on the stationery bike and 15 min at 3.5 on the treadmill and followed those with a couple sets of 12 reps on three weigh machines. Not much compared to some of you but that's good for me.
I've really gained since Thanksgiving! And I can tell the difference in how I feel...it's made me realize once again this need to lose weight is about much more than how I look or how clothes fit now...it is about my health. Because of my getting off track since Thanksgiving, I've had high bs and the neuropathy in my hands and feet has come back. It pretty much disappeared when I was eating the MF way! Since I have grocery money for Dec I ordered more MF products. I will still eat a modified MF diet but it does help me. I ordered only foods I know I like plus a few individual items of things I think I'll like. Karen31 - I can imagine your frustration at waiting for everything to happen with the houses! I feel that way about our house in AZ. Found out last night the carpets are not yet cleaned and the pool guy is going back to clean it. I hope both those things are done today, but the realtor was to take pictures today. So don't know whether that will be done now or now. Ads (with pics) were to go up tomorrow. I SO want to get this all over and done with! She told me Dec is not a good time for getting many lookers but said the ones that do look are usually serious, so hope one of those "serious" lookers WILL take a look! Have any of you started your Christmas shopping? I have started...have 3 people finished and 3 or 4 others started. Dh is calling me and I have nothing else to talk about so will close. Have a good day everyone! |
Heh, I found the new thread!! :cp:
Good morning, everyone! I have to run now to get to the gym, 50 minute walk there and then want to do some weight training, then into the office today (3xweek gig). But I have a lot to do before I can get out. It's already 7 a.m.! But just wanted to say, thanks for all the support! I was great yesterday on all fronts. Even the no smoking. I was thinking how tough it was, feeling this fighting going on inside, wanting a cig and then I just thought, no, heck, it's NOT hard. I WANT to do this and I can...easily. Really, I mean, I do a LOT of things that are super hard. It must be my Leoine adolescent stubbornness but when I WANT to do something there's no stopping me. So, changing my thinking may be the trick. I am pysched. I may have found my mantra and found my way back to what was a much tougher me in past years!! Hurrah!! :dancer:  :dancer: :trampo: |
Hi everyone. we had another 6 inches of snow last nite. its beautiful out and above 0. i gave myself a perm and trim early this morning,my hair is starting to grow back,i lost a lot of it after my surg. its shorter and kinda spiky in the back. im pleased with the results. just got back from the grocery store. i wasnt going to bake but like to give cookies and fudge as gifts and my gr kids asked (sigh) how can i say no to them. so got the ingrediants for fudge, spritz(pressed butter cookie) roll out sugar cookies, and tea time tassies(like a mini pecan pie) and russsian tea cakes. and finnish bisquit( asweet bread) whew the trick will be to not taste.my dh voluntered :dizzy: Maryea. glad you liked the book, its one of my favorites. karen 31 feel better soon. hoping you all are having a great day (((hugs))) rosey

Welcome December!
Glad you're feeling much better today Karen31. Hope everything hurries up with that house. Mary, I've got about half of my shopping done. I'm leaving on Monday to deliver some of them at DS's house. I want my little Boo to have his by Christmas. Not sure if we'll see them until after Christmas day. My MIL has all hers done. She wrote checks and put them in the Christmas cards. LOL. Red, glad you're so happy with yourself today. I put in a very long afternoon at the Goodwill and Food Bank today. The place was a mess yesterday and we just didn't get a chance to get it tidied up before we left. So today my friend and I went there a bit early and started cleaning up the mess. The shelves looked like a tornado had gone through. Clothing slung around everywhere. There were so many stuffed animals taking up good shelf space that I tied them up with yarn and had a public hanging. Ha. I hung them up on the wall. I stacked up all the used books in neat piles and put the housewares shelves in order. Then another lady came and started on the shoe rack. Then I went into the food bank area and started unpacking food that had been delivered that morning. When I came out the clothing shelves were so neat and clean looking, I was impressed with the ladies who had done the work. Now, tomorrow we'll have to do it all over again. But at least it's easier to get around there now. Tomorrow morning I'm taking my MIL shopping. It won't be a long trip though because she gets tired. Last time I took her shopping I thought the family would blame me for killing mother. She was so tired I thought she was ready to collapse but she wouldn't take a rest or sit down until we got to the car. So tomorrow we'll only shop for a couple of hours. Then it's off to the Goodwill again. Take care everyone. See you all tomorrow. Hey, there Rosie, we were posting at the same time. I used to give my mother a perm but giving one to myself would be beyond my reach. How do you get all those curlers in your hair. Even when I did it to mom it was hard getting all the hair curled around the rods. I made spritz cookies this year. I used a pastry bag and large star tip instead of my cookie press. So much easier. I used to make Russian Tea Cakes all the time. I really like them but haven't made them for some time now. I think I'll add them to my 2011 Christmas Food List. |
Hello All!
Quiet in here today..... I have had a very busy day at work. I has been one of those days where I have just been a little off all day:?: I swear I would lose my mind if my head wasn't attached :D(a favorite saying of my beloved Grandma). Red, YAY:carrot: You sound so good today! I love it. Nothing beats attitude:cool: Mary, I can't believe that it is December..... I have barely started shopping and I need to kick it in gear. I shop almost exclusively online so I need to get stuff ordered. I absolutely hate shopping:(. I am thinking positive thoughts on your house situation. Glad that you are ordering MF, it seemed to give you confidence. I can relate so much to the idea that this is about our health, and not just how we look. Karen, glad that the cold is passing in a hurry. I can't imagine how stressful it is to be dealing with all the house stuff. I hope you get an answer soon. I sure liked the pictures of the new house. Bobbi, thanks for starting the new thread. I hope you are having a good day! Well, I will catch personals on everyone else in the morning.... I am off to finish work and then pool league tonight. The weather forcast is for several inches of snow.... Rie |
Hola...
I'm being pathetic and quiet here... I slept for about 3 hours this afternoon and am, just, coping. I don't feel that bad, just completely drained. Red - you sound better. Good. Quitting smoking has to be the hardest thing ever, so just hang in there. I quit 2,117 times one year and the 2,118th took. It helped that I became allergic, though... Isabella - you're a good DIL! CK - did you hear anything? Are you feeling better? Was your boobie squeeze okay? Well, this exhausted me, so I'm going to go pull the meat loaf out of the oven and consider, just consider, doing dishes. Later! |
Hey GGs,
I’ve been trying to get myself in the mood to get started decorating for Christmas. And, I need to start getting some of the cooking done, & put in the freezer. So far it all just seems to require too much effort (& I’m just so lazy). The first thing I’d like to get accomplished is baking the fruit cakes - I have to bake two, one for my household & one for my mom’s (she buys half the ingredients, they get more & more expensive each year!). I’ve been wondering, are most of y’all fruit cake lovers, or fruit cake haters? I only like the fruit cakes my family (now only me, actually) makes. Ours only have candied pineapple & cherries, & pecans (plus your basic flour, butter, sugar & flavorings). I thought it was odd that all the ladies, on both my father’s & my mother’s sides of the family (even my step-grandmother), used basically the same recipe, until I inherited my maternal grandmother’s recipes. The ladies I mentioned, all lived in central FL, & I discovered several newspaper clippings, cut out of the Tampa (FL) Tribune, that had the recipe for “Mrs. Harvey’s White Fruit Cake” - the same recipe they’d all used, except for some minor variations. Mystery solved! Anyway, how do y’all feel about fruit cake? Oh, my SO loves ours (though he also likes the “store-bought” ones), & when he finds out someone doesn’t like fruit cakes, he tries to talk them into trying ours. We all tell him to “shut up!!” because we already have too many people we have to share ours with (I really ought to make 3 or 4, but at least this way, I never get to eat more than one or two small pieces). While I’m on the subject of holiday food, have any of you heard of “boiled custard” that you drink? I’m thinking Freda probably has, since she’s from KY. That’s where my great-grandmother was from, & she’s the one that made it. I was surprised to see a recipe for it in Better Homes & Gardens (I think the Nov. issue). It’s like a cooked version of eggnog, without the nutmeg - very rich, very good, & very fattening! I won’t be making any, but I sure would like to! I’m still “celebrating” the Pollyanna Holiday with positive thoughts. And isn’t it a good excuse for putting off all that “Christmas stuff”?! Thanks KarenFL for the holiday, & Isabella for coming up with the name (I’d been trying to figure out what to call it), & Marie for pointing out that Isabella had come up with the name. Luckily for me, my SO is getting to enjoy the holiday too, with today & the rest of the week, off from work (more sleep-in days for me, I love it!). He had some vacation days coming, & work is slow right now. Well, time for my nightly snack, & then some reading. Hope everyone that’s been feeling “under the weather” is all better now (Donna, you don't sound much better, sorry!), & that all of y’all have enjoyed this little extra holiday as much as me. I guess tomorrow I might just have to get started on some of this stuff I’ve been putting off, but tonight’s still Pollyanna time, so I’m not going to think about it. Oh, & Rie, my grandma used to say that too. And my great-grandma & my great-aunt, come to think of it. ‘Night all. NCNancy |
Well, I made it through the day.. the mammogram is done and I will probably get the results in a couple days. It doesn't take long anymore. We had planned to go to Advent services tonight at church but after being out this afternoon and then fixing some supper (mac and cheese with hot dogs in it-- worked hard on that one!) I set down on the couch and just ended up freezing again and really tired. Think it is best we didn't go and be out in the night air and also I sure didn't need to spread my germs around anymore than I already did today. So I'm wrapped up in the afghan again on the couch and playing on the laptop.
We haven't heard anymore on either house yet. Hopefully we will tomorrow. There is only 43 days until the people that want to buy ours want to close. Now I just need to find the energy to get everything boxed up and ready to move. At least we don't have to pack everything so secure since we are just moving a short distance and not across Kansas!! Donna, I hope you are feeling better. I know I'm not over it but hopefully I can still function enough to get stuff done. I'm hoping we will be able to at least move some stuff into the garage at the new house before closing. Kind of hard to have both closings the same day if we can't get stuff moved out of here before. I guess it will all work out--- maybe I just like to worry! Well, I think I'm going to sit back and relax, actually I think I want something to drink, my mouth is dry. Hello to everyone. I'll be happy to get over this cold and hopefully be able to get personals done. have a good night |
Good evening GG's,
It is a short one tonight. I have to go in early tomorrow, so I'd better get done and quit goofing off and get to bed before too much longer. 4:30 am comes too soon. Thankfully I got out of work on time tonight. They are updating the computer programs that we use for order entry, charting and most everything. So we have to do "down time" proceedures. Everything we usually do will have to be done on paper tomorrow until they get the new system up and running. I'm wondering why they didn't do it on a weekend when things are usually a little less busy. Then for our continued enjoyment and pleasure of the day, they are also having a "mock" survey (make believe that the state or federal surveyers are here). Wonder who on earth brilliant idea it was to do this on the same day when everything will already be in chaos. Did have some fun and laughter here this evening. I am here on my lap top and a call came thorugh on the skype thing. It didn't give any name, so I dismissed it. I wondered if it was DH goofing around. He has gotten one of those tablet (HTC flyer) things and we were calling each other the other day to practice how to use skype. So, I called him ~ it had not been him. He could only see my face from the nose up and told me that I needed to tilt my screen. I told him if I tilted my screen I couldn't see it and that he didn't need to see my whole face anyway. I told him it was this shortness problem I have. He told me maybe I needed to sit on a pillow and I told him I already was. I commented that his hair was all messed up like he had been the wind and he said ~ that actually that is exactly what had happened, as he had just been out to the mail box. We were having fun laughing and joking around ~ laughter is good :D Ok, I will have to catch up with you all tomorrow. Hope you all rest well and if you're not feeling so good ~ that you will feel better. Take care |
Oh dear, late again, I'm afraid. Well, first things first: 1159 calories today and 41.3 grams of fiber. Lotsa liquids....black coffee, diet (10 calorie) cranberry juice and diet ice green tea. Just my third day back on the wagon, but it feels like I'm getting into the groove.
And now...omg. December already! I can hardly stand it! Feel better, Caddyk and PT. I think I'm finally dragging out of that slump I've been in with the lingering bronchitis. Slept very well last night...didn't wake up coughing, so that's progress. Now I have a few sneezing/coughing fits during the day, and that's about it. Nancy, I've made that simple fruit cake recipe...using just the cherries and pineapples...actually, I think I've also put in some dried apricots from time to time, but not that other stuff...what are those little colored chunks of hard jelly-like things that a lot of the store-bought fruit cakes have in them? I hate those little boogers. Oh, I put walnuts in mine too..chopped coarsely. Yum. Val, I'm a little "off" every day. This countdown to retiring is a pain in the neck! The shorter it gets, the more annoying it seems to get....oh, well...just 5 more months and I'll bust out of there... Rosey, are we going to see a picture of the new perm? MORE snow? Oh, ugh. So far, all we had was that freak October storm, and the temperatures have been in the 50's and 60's ever since. (I'm thinking I may owe a debt of gratitude to K3...she may have blown some tropical air up this way just to be nice.) Red, you can most certainly do whatever you decide you want to do! We all can! I'm feeling a lot more empowered this week, too for some reason. I'm liking it a lot. Well, that's all for now....G'nite, GG's! Z |
Gayle, I’m trying to take a long time to make it. Sort of like a decadent chocolate dessert – make it last. I really am out of windows so I have to be slow. I hope your day tomorrow isn’t as yucky as you’re anticipating.
Rie, LOL at BMF. At least you gave the guy a great compliment. Mary, I actually got a letter from my secondary insurance yesterday reminding me that I haven’t had a mammogram and to get to it. It was odd. Of course, that wasn’t the case since my primary paid May’s mammo and secondary will be paying for December’s. I was surprised they wanted me to spend their money. And, great job on the exercise. Never, ever compare your efforts with anyone else. You are doing awesome! Stay positive about your efforts. Zoe, I saw they put up a new guard rail on the bridge sometime today. I’m glad as I noticed where it was missing was straight off the bridge since the road curves right after the bridge. And way to go on the calories. I hope your arm feels better soon. I know that you will miss your bench presses! Isabella, I’m a licker too!!!! I found the only way to stop is to chew a minty gum. And even then, I’ve been known to hide it in my cheek and still lick batter. I love batter. BTW, your ingredients sound awesome except the PB. Actually that sounds yummy but they’d kill me. Donna, I swear you’ll be an exercise convert before long. Exercising equates to the body moving easier, especially at our age. Yep, Rie, Lynn and I will convert you before long. KarenMO, glad you feel better. You have tons to do and being sick makes it nasty. Did you put an expiration on your house offer? Red, glad to see you are psyched about the fight. You will win the battle as long as you keep fighting. Rosey, I lost a bunch of my hair on the back right side when I lost weight a couple decades ago on a VLCD. Fell out in clumps. I’m glad yours is growing back and I can assure you it will continue to do so. Isabella, did you read about the elderly man that didn’t trust banks (wise man) had hid his savings in a suit and then mistakenly gave it to Goodwill? It was a sad article as Goodwill can’t find the donated suit. Anyway, thank you for all the volunteer work you do. Nancy, fruit cake hater here but I do buy glace fruit. I use it in the Czeck holiday bread Houska. And the glace fruit is getting to be a fruity gold. It is expensive. And I want Pollyanna holiday to continue through Christmas. Can we do that? It’s my bedtime and I’m going to stop here even though I had some caffeine the afternoon. I was yawning and thinking a nap as I drove would be a great idea. So I added a little caffeinated espresso beans to my afternoon mocha. Zing, I’m away. There is a nice side of being decaffeinated 99% of the time. BTW, the scale moved in a good direction this morning. At some point I’ll start posting loss numbers but for now, I’m behind Zoe on day 2 of being an  :) Marie |

Hi everyone. spent a really nice day,my dh can make me laugh better than any one. heres a pic of my new hairdo. the bangs got really thin but have thickened up but i would like them to grow longer. my hair was really thin and falling out in klumps for awhile.i thought id go bald and was seriously looking for a wig, but it stopped and started to grow back. i have always cut and permed my own hair. seems i always would rather spend the extra $ on books and craft stuff then at the beauty shop :dizzy: hope your evenings peaceful (((hugs)) rosey

Rosey ~ your perm came out good ~ looks really nice. Love that smile too :D

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick fly-by. Happy December, Lynn |
A quick fly by here too, much to do. I do all my Christmas decorating a couple days before Thanksgiving to give the house a festive look when my family comes for Thanksgiving. Zoe...I need to get back in the grind and post my calories again like you, that would keep me accountable but I just can't get my mind wrapped around it. All this Christmas baking keeps me off balance. Yesterday DH wanted some sugar cookies, I made a batch...froze 1/2 of them. Today I'm making those yummy molasses crinkle top cookies. BTW Nancy...I will join Marie in hating fruit cake. Yuk...all those icky citrus fruity thingies are bitter. Never had homemade, I'd probably like yours since I love candied pineapple and cherries.
Karen...Why are you moving? I must have missed that, isn't this the house you refurbished the pool? Are you moving closer to your family? Rosie...I've never heard of Russian Tea cakes called Tea Time Tassies but I love them. I purchased a tiny muffin cup pan to make them a few years ago and never used it. Maybe I'll look for a recipe today and add them to my menu for Christmas. The last couple of years we started a new tradition, instead of cooking a large meal, we graze on hor d'oeuvres. Cheeses, crackers, dips, meats, sandwiches, sweets, etc. I can make all this up days in advance with some freezing, then relax on Christmas. DD brings games, we play scrabble. We played scrabble over thanksgiving, it last forever since some people (DD) takes forever with her turn. Donna...meat loaf huh? I just saw a recipe on allrecipes.com that I'm going to try. Meat loaf is a comfort food to me, love it. Marie...I like the batter from my mixer blades too. My brother loves chocolate chip cookie dough and my mom did the unthinkable. She sent him some raw dough to Viet Nam when he was in the navy. Geeeeee, raw eggs and all went to him. It a wonder he didn't die from food poisoning. I never did ask him if he got sick from it, and he never said. I've got my molasses bottle turned upside down, I need 1/2 cup and I'm a couple tablespoon short. Better get my cookie batter mixed up. Hi Rie, Lynn, Red, Glynne and Isabella. Yesterday in the comic section of the paper Opal was asking her husband why more kids weren't named after her. She said the most popular name this year was ISABELLA. |
Hoping I can slip in here for some support this month. I am a 50-something married (29 yrs), mother of 3 grown children with 3 grands and two more one the way (one due monday!). I was diagnosed with diabetes in May of 2011. Have been battling the weight for many years! Have lost 50 so far, have 25 more to go. I do accounting for a small public school, train and compete in obedience and agility with two of our dogs. My daughter raises and shows Collies, so we have several. I also teach obedience to kids through a 4-H group. My favorite form of exercise is walking, although it is getting harder since the weather has turned so cold. I also take an AquaZumba class 2x a week. Looking for some support while I finish this journey and then learn to maintain!

Good Morning, All....
I am totally and completely PATHETIC! I don't DO sick, as you know, so what is going on here?? I actually called in puny today! I slept for a few hours yesterday afternoon, drugged myself into a long sleep last night, and I'm thinking another 10-15 hours wouldn't be amiss. Oh, woe is me, woe is me! Nancy - I've never liked fruitcake, either, but it's probably the type they make here. Like PT/Zoe, I don't like biting into those icky booger things, and I just don't like the taste of it! I pick up a store-bought 1/2 price one for GM every year, which she likes, but she's the only one I know who will eat the stuff (it's really EXPENSIVE!). I have another pathetic woe: one of my bad boys ran off, and I was looking at a $3,000 bill to the court for his failure to appear. The cops got him on Tuesday and put him in the hospital, from which he calmly walked away. Guess who's still on the hook? Yep, and I paid part of it yesterday and will have to pay the rest in a couple of months. Mucho bummer! CK - are you feeling better? I hope you hear something on the house SOON. Rosey - you look adorable! I don't say that lightly, and I love the perm, the 'do, and, mostly, your mischievous smile! Great combo!! Marie - at what point will I be an exercise convert? When I hit 3 minutes a day, maybe? That's probably the top level of my commitment... :) BTW, after I paid my bill at the court yesterday, I did some grocery shopping for GM, and I was able to walk the entire store without a twinge! I'm agog, amazed, and other things that this simple exercise is working! I'm almost like a normal person, very aware of the hip, and I am so excited when it doesn't hurt! I'm off to sleep a little more... so, Everyone, have a lovely rest of the day. It's snowing here, very cold. Probably people will cancel their appointments today, so maybe it won't be so bad that I'm not working? I hope so. I do worry and fret, you know! Anyway, have a lovely day!! Connie - just saw your post........ WELCOME! |
Good morning all.....Darn it I just gotta love you all. You took my holiday and made it work. awwwwwwwwwwwwh thank you
Connie...welcome aboard. Funny read your note and for a second thought you taught kids to be obedient! Dh is doing well and has alot more range of motion than I thought he would get back. Never did find out what they were going to do with the broom handle???? We tried to plan everything ahead of time so that the next month would be easy. But forgot about Xmas stuff. He has it stuck up in the attic were I can't reach it. so the only decoration I have is my Moravian Star. No tree nuth'n honey.....Does that mean I can get all new stuff?????yeaah Rosie....love love love the do....your face is getting so tiny. What a great gift you have done for yourself. I wanna be you when i grow up. Zoe....did you say 5 months? I thought it was like late Feb? Mary...maybe you can get New Connie to obedience train your DS? Bobbie...Thank you for starting the new month. I may be mistaken but think the 3Chicks want us to stay under 500 entries because of possible overloading the system. Hate when site crashes. We are having all the rest of the Oleanders pulled out. They attract the world's ugliest caterpillar. It's about 2"long black with hairtuffs and fangs. And bites. Nasty bugger. Fun of living in the tropics. Marie...sound like you are gonna have do a Karen and move somewhere so you have more windows. Neighbor has a couple of beautiful windows she has hanging on chains in her pool cage. They catch the light and turn her lania into fairyland. Geeesh...just found that the lawnguy has weedwacked the valve stems off the boat trailer. Bet he heard me giggling when he wacked the flashing tin last week. Donna...Hope you feel better. Tea with honey and lemon. Curl up with cat and a book. Rest this weekend. Must get to the grocery store...have no milk, eggs, vegies...actually pantry is bare.... hugs all k3 |

Donna, hope you're feeling better with all that rest you're trying to get. Being sick can just wear a body down. I didn't go shopping this morning. My MIL was too tired from grocery shopping yesterday with my SIL. We're going to try for tomorrow morning. So sorry about the Bad Boy incident. Nancy, put me down as a fruit cake lover. I even like the mixed fruit with the citron peel. Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on the mixed fruit container. I was astonished to find that the first ingredient was rutabaga!!!! (Now, I love rutabaga but I like it cooked and mashed with dinner.) I'm not partial to bought fruitcake though unless it's a premium brand and then I'd still prefer homemade. One of my favorites is a cherry pound cake. Yum. I'm actually baking a fruitcake as I'm typing. It's a boiled fruit cake. Very easy as the original recipe only calls for raisins but I've added cherries, dates, mixed fruit and nuts. It's an old war time cake recipe and doesn't require eggs. I'm making it for my sister who cannot eat eggs right now. Just last month I ran across a recipe for cooked eggnog. I imagine it's similar to the "boiled custard" that you wrote about. Sounds delicious as I love anything creamy and custardy. Karen31, glad the "squeeze" went well. You probably did well to stay inside last night. Nothing worse than being chilled to the bone when you're sick. Gayle, we use Skype to talk to our darling GS. Well, we do most of the talking while his father follows him around with the laptop so we can watch him play. Sometimes he tries to kiss the computer screen when he waves good bye. Hope work was too hectic today with all the changes and surveys you have to do. Zoe, just you hang in there with the retirement countdown. Soon you'll be looking back at it instead of forward. Marie, the pb was mixed sugar & butter and was sandwiched between 2 miniature pretzels and then dipped in chocolate. You could just have the chocolate dipped pretzels minus the pb. That's a sad story about the man with the money. The suit could have even been thrown out. You should see some of the rags people donate for clothing, not saying this man's suit was rags. (Most stuff donated is good, though.) ThatCzeck holiday bread sounds delicious. How do you make it? Rosey, your new hair do is gorgeous as are you. It looks so not home done. Waving  right back atcha, Lynn. Bobbi, everything old is new again. Who'd a thunk Isabella would be such a popular name. I'm named after my GM who was named after her GM. Hi Connie. Welcome aboard. I too thought at first reading, you trained children in obedience. lol, lol. But that might not be such a bad idea. Karen3, we have to do some digging around our house this spring. It's too cold now to do it but it must be done. We have earwigs that are over running our place. Everyone is in the same boat because we had such a damp summer and fall. They live in foliage and we have lots of that up against the house (most of it weeds!). We're going to take out about a foot or maybe 18 inches of weedy sod and bushes and lay down landscaping material and cover that in decorative crushed rock. My son did that and has had good results with crawly visitors. Thankfully the earwigs are harmless (but ugly) and don't breed indoors. Have fun buying new Christmas stuff, haha. Well the fruitcake is baked and out of the oven. The place is full of spicy Christmas smells. Hope my sister likes this one. I'm sure she will. Must run and get ready for the Goodwill. Catch you all later. |
Hello Goldens!
Back as promised this morning! I sure enjoy checking in here - it really gets my day going in the right direction. We are an amazing group of women - full of reality, humor, the occasional angst, and the strength that comes with the blessing of XX chromazomes.... :D I worked out for 90+minutes this morning in an attempt to distract myself from my day. Didn't work but I liked the endorphins :carrot: I have an appointment with the oral surgeon today to start the process for my tooth implants. I am such a dental phobic that it requires sedatives.... oh my. Total panic attacks :dizzy: Mary, as I read your post, I got the following: stretch class, 45 minutes of aerobics, AND weight lifting! No need to compare yourself negatively to anyone. Inspiring. Donna, yup, it sounds like you are dangerously close to becomming a convert. ;) I'm just glad that your hip isn't barking at you so hard. Hopefully your jumper will get picked up again and you can take the money out of his hide! And wow, what's up with the Arrapaho sheriff??? Red, be careful of the earwigs! Seriously - a couple years ago my mom got one in her ear (I always thought that was a myth) and it bit her and caused all kinds of problems and inflamation. EWWWW. Karen, loving your holiday! He wacked the stems off the boat trailer?? Do they hang gardeners in FL???:joker: Nancy, I so DESPISE fruitcake but I probably haven't ever tasted good stuff. Not really fond of dried fruit... Rosey, you look terrific! I so enjoy your beaming smile. It lights up the world! Hi Connie! I know you from the diabetes chat. Welcome to the Golden Girls. This is a really good group. Pull up a chair and settle in! Bobbi, I am so scared to start holiday treats but I am going to do it all in one fell swoop later this month. Our family often does the no-dinner-just-goodies buffet. It is so relaxing! I primarily make fancy chocolates so I can't freeze them. I am planning to bake cookies with the kids at work next week. Hi Lynn! Hope you are well! Gayle, I really loved the story of your playfullness with your dh!:cp: It was really sweet! Marie. Good news about the insurance company - a rare thing! I was wondering about how you count your excercise? Do you go by duration, heart rate, distance? Just wondering.... Zoe, it sounds like you are really in the groove with calories.... Really low, darlin - what is your target? Karen31, feel better! Maybe it is just a message for you to rest right now in preparation for the stuff you will have to do soon. I must admit - you sound really calm. I am not sure that I could get my house packed in just over a month without a huge effort! Well, I know that I am missing people here - so sorry. I must get showered and ready for my appointment. (shudder) Sorry, I am a baby about this... Rie |
Rosey, I love your hair style and blue eyes. You are gorgeous!
Bobbi, wow on the cookie dough to Vietnam. WOW!!! Even I wouldn't eat that. Wecome Connie!!! Another dog love. YAY!!!! I, too, work for a public school system. I work at the district office (although at the moment my butt is located at the district office but no one would consider 3FC work). Donna, I am so confused. I thought you went out and caught the bad guys like Stephanie Plum. But alas, you're the bail bondsgirl and front the money? Did you know walking is exercise - and you did that in a grocery store pushing a hefty cart. I bet you made 15 minutes yesterday. KarenFL, I love the idea of hanging stained glass over the pool. My sister used to live in FL and her pool area had the screen enclosure. I can picture adding glass to that. My pool is out in the open air and I plan to move only to the backyard after the crematorium is finished with me. I want my ashes with my doggies. Moving equates to worse than pretty much everything else in life. BTW, don't you have a nice neighbor that could climb up into the attic and get your Christmas goodies? I'd suggest the lawnguy but he seems pretty incompetant. And your housecleaners were thieves. OK, I can see where buying new might be cheaper. Isabella, oh your treats sounds so decadent. It is a good thing I live nowhere near you or I'd be stopping in regularly. Houska is a sweet bread dough. Then you take the glace fruit stuff (I like the cherries best) and knead it into the dough. Then you make 7 long rolls of it and braid 3 at a time, 2 layers, then drape the final long roll over the top. It looks beautiful and tastes amazing hot and fresh, or toasted with butter. I can post the recipe if anyone wants it. Rie, I love your reference to XX Chromosomes. Whenever men do stupid things (like nearly always) I mutter it's the Y chromosome. I go by speed (or intensity), distance and time for calc'ing my exercise. Mostly I let my iPhone do it for me. As I've spent mucho time here, I will get back to work. I'm avoiding one of the worst Dept of Ed reports but it's due mid month and it was easier to avoid in November since it wasn't December. Now I feel a deadline coming my way. But as a bonus, the OR DoE had the ingenuity to create a worse and nastier collection that will start some time soon. I hate them. I do. The entity, not the people as I've pretty much only had one bad encounter with one person. The rest have been nice. Just like my scale was this morning. Marie |
Hi everyone.
I have been missing in action for a few days, touch of the migraines, three dayer. Hope it is over now. Really affects the effort to exercise. But stayed on plan. Bobbi, I can't read your posts, they make me want to eat all those good things you talk about. LOL Connie, welcome, you will find lots of support here. Sounds like you are doing good. Rie, I am with you on not liking the dentist, I have gotten better over the years, I just had to switch to a new one(old one retired) first thing I said to him was, did you notice on my chart it states ' I don't like pain". He just laughed. Hope all goes well for you. Boy, I sure could go for some homemade fruitcake! Haven't had that in years, my mom use to make it, wrap it in brown paper and store it for a month or two before we could even eat it. Hard to believe it was so good. |
I did well yesterday. Food was not great but I got to the gym and I did NOT smoke. I wanted to so much too but I kept arguing with myself and the non-smoking me won!! :bravo:
I haven't done enough to lose weight but I think I should maintain. I realize that I just don't get enough exercise to be eating like I am. I used to do tons more and still am in that mode. However, I want to eat, so I have to exercise more. Will try to get an indoor bike set up. Right now, I'm just super busy and have to leave for Hong Kong on Wednesday. It's cold and raining here now :rain: but I am determined to get to the gym again :lifter: before the office. And, for the first time in ages, I actually cooked some brown rice and dumped some curry over it and am taking it to the office. It is not great but it is a huge step and a notch up on my recent habit of bringing cutup fruit and vegetables to the office. Because I had something to snack on I have been able to stop snacking on junk. Most of the time I don't even eat everything I bring with me. ************** Rie -- earwigs? I was thinking, is this slang for something else? Then did a search to see if anyone had been talking about them (I don't even know what they are) and sure enough I think you mean someone else. jess -- What does "call in puny" mean? Are you sick? If so, hope you get better soon! Thanks for the smoking support. There is something mental and probably physically that really gets me craving when I am tired at the end of the day and also certain frustrations act as triggers too. Trying to deal with them mentally or in some way other than smoking. suttercm -- Hello and welcome! :welcome2: You're over 50 and expecting? Wow! Congratulations! Bobbolink -- Wow, all this talk about baking! How do you ever NOT eat it all? Yesterday at work I signed up as one wanting the free cake and coffee or tea that the coffee would give us on the 22nd. The others thought I wouldn't sign up because I haven't been eating ANY sugar but I thought I would allow it just this once! Of course, not eating sugar doesn't mean I lose weight. It just means I don't snowball with even more! :lol3: Marie -- thanks for the support. I am still psyched (easy early in the morning revved on caffeine, NOT easy at the end of the day when I want a cigarette badly!) ellabella -- I think there is something in the stars or planets that is sending energy my way. I was really dragging last week. It was terrible. Maybe my little binge the other day was good for me. I don't know how you eat so few calories. If I did that I would.....maybe I'd lose weight! :lol3: retiredone -- Let's hope my feeling lasts. Have fun shopping! :whoo: ****** ladyinweighting, glynne, Karen31, Nancy, akrosey, anyone I missed, hello! |

Here's a picture of an earwig. I'm the one who has them around the outside of my house and inside as well I fear. They come in on the wood we burn. They aren't very big. A centimeter is just under half an inch to give you an idea of how big they are. They don't actually pinch with the pincers, or at least it's rare.
|
Good one Red. LOL, LOL
|
Red, I loved the cartoon!!!
I'm among the living, barely. Don't worry. I'll be over the whining and crying very soon, promise! Marie - I'm the greatly-more-ethical Vinnie Plum counterpart, not the ditzy Stephanie! I've been very lucky over the years; this is just the 2nd time I've had to fork out moola in 16 years. I guess I shouldn't complain, but I will! Rie - the deal with the Arapahoe sheriff is SO sad. He was such a well-respected man, and how he's fallen. I can't imagine that he will survive this, literally, if he ever raises enough cash to bond out. I can't imagine him in prison. CK - thanks for calling me. It brightened my day! I hope you hear something good soon, both from the house and the son. SamCat is liking this heavy snoozing schedule. He likes to cuddle, anyway, and all this sleeping is just heaven for him! Red - "calling in puny" is calling in sick. Sorry! I tend to have my own idioms, I guess :) Onward... and back to bed! |
WELL HERE IS THE NEWSFLASH! THEY ACCEPTED OUR OFFER ON THE HOUSE WE WANT TO BUY!! NOW IF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE BUYING OURS COME THROUGH WITHOUT A HITCH THE HOUSE WILL BE OURS!! YAY!! KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED!
Bobbi, We decided about 6 months ago that if we could sell our house for what we wanted we would like to get a little newer, bigger, more modern house. So when we just got about got to the point that we figured it wasn't going to sell, we had an offer come for ours that we accepted and Tim found one on the internet that was just to nice not to at least check out. So if all goes well we will be moving in the middle of January. I have pics of if on our FB page if you would like to see it. So I'm pretty excited but I'm still feeling miserable!!! Donna it was good talking to you today too--- I figured "misery loves company!" Hope you feel better real soon and hope that they get that "bad boy" back where he belongs!! Ok. I'm going to go for now-- I'll catch up one of these days but I want to see the Country Christmas Special tonight so need to get my kitchen cleaned up and get me some coffee!! Have a good night!! |
1144 calories, 51 grams of fiber.....whoa. A lot of fiber, huh? Well, it's pretty easy when I have that chipotle black bean soup for lunch - that's 19 grams of fiber all by itself. Then, my morning oatmeal with 3 tbs of Benefiber added, two pitas with the soup for 8 more grams, and then instead of having my taco filling tonight on hard shell corn tacos (which I LOVE) I had it on more pita bread - 8 more grams of fiber...it really adds up. As for my daily calorie goals - it's basically to stay under 1200. According to Weight Watchers, in order to lose weight, I need to stay at 24 points per day. That's 1200 calories. I'm going to stay on the low side for a couple of weeks just to see if I can drop some of those Thanksgiving (and post-wedding) pounds quickly, and THEN I'll get on the scale, and THEN I'll probably start alternating up and down with something similar to the Wendie Plan. I really want to get into a routine that I can be comfortable with, and not have to keep working towards specific dates or events or whatever, but just get down to where I'm feeling my best and then learning how to stay there!
Glad to hear that your house plans seem to be working out, CaddyK...the pictures are pretty awesome. So what's the story with the Arapahoe sheriff? Seems like I missed something along the way...? Hope you're feeling better soon, PT! Isabella, that is one unpleasant looking little beastie....thanks for sharing, of course. (And I should be on the lookout for one of these critters crawling into my ear, you say?) You know what that guy on the scale needs, right, Red? I KNOW I need say no more on that subject. Water is clearly not what he's full of... Oh, and good going on the not smoking! Wait until you see how much better you feel after a couple of weeks :D. Oh ack, Val! You reminded me that I need to make an appointment with the dentist!!!! I can't STAND it...I need to be fully sedated just to get a filling! K3, I am retiring at the end of April...that's when I turn 66 and can collect my full social security. I figure I may as well work the few extra months, since there's about a $200 difference in what I can collect between 65 and 10 months and 66. Seems silly to take that kind of cut when it just means working a few more months, you know? Okay, g'nite to everybody else....I'm afraid I'm melting away with fatigue...soon I'll be nothing but a puddle on the floor in front of my computer...:faint: Z |
Karen31 hope you enjoyed your Country Christmas special. I'm not into country music but I'm surrounded by it where I live. Everyone likes it so when in Rome....haha. I'm pleased for you about the house. Hope everything works out on the other end.
Zoe, I don't think you have to worry too much about earwigs getting in your ears any more than any other bug. From my extensive research (after they showed up as unwanted guests) I found that they are harmless to humans and seldom bite. I would imagine if they did get trapped in one's ear they might bite. One of the GG's mother had one bite her in the ear but that's probably a rare occurrence, unless it's a different kind of earwig. They like damp, warm places. Found 2 in my bathroom hamper tonight. Marie, that bread sounds so good. When I was a kid my mother used to make a sweet bread with the mixed fruit for Christmas but it was just made in loaves. I'd love to have the recipe. I'm up waiting for a load of clothes to finish washing so I can throw them in the dryer. Need some clean pants to wear tomorrow. Throwing yawns at everyone. Good night. |
I love your hair, Rosie. It's becoming on you.
Bobbi - I saw something online that looked like your bears but it said "blue polar bear" not green. It sold for $325. Scroll way down, almost at the bottom. http://www.glasshunter.com/figurines.htm Maryea - I have gained, too, and I wanted to lose before my surgery. But I have been so stressed out about the surgery and I guess I'm stress eating. It was better when I had the first surgery because I went to the ER in pain and they said "Your're going up for surgery right now" before I had a chance to think about it. I'm not afraid of the surgery per se, but I have a lot of bad irritation on my stomach and I'm afraid he will cancel the surgery until it's healed. Pray for healing by next Friday! |
Good evening GG's,
Well, two days down one more to go. The day went pretty well. The computer stuff wasn't too bad. Was able to figure out stuff. The surveyors never showed up on my floor, unless they came after I left. I am hoping that they saw enough and are done and will just skip our floor. The boss said that on the floors they did visit ~ they were "brutal". :( I was doing battle with myself in my head tonight. The better choices won out. Yippee. I was feeling like I wanted to indulge in some no-no's. My knees were feeling pretty good and I told myself that it would be just plain stupid to eat some junk and mess up my progress with the knee pain. With out even thinking (earlier in the day) I had a couple bites of some cake someone had brought in. That turned out ok though ~ previously, I would have said to myself, that I had had those couple bites, so I had been bad, and I might just as well finish off the day being bad ~ but ~ yippee again ~ I didn't resort to my old habits. I haven't had too many successes in a row, but I will take each one. One better choice is one less bad one :D Some exciting news ~ I am going to get some alone time this weekend. DH is going to Charlotte, North Carolina (he leaves tomorrow evening) to visit DD Jen and DGD Evie. Evie is 17 months. This is the first time DH will have seen her. Looking forward to the pictures that will come back from there. He takes a lot of pictures, and he probably annoys people doing it, but later on people are glad ~ because there are lots of pictures to enjoy. DD Sara will take him to the airport. I have to pick him up next Tuesday. Thankfully it will be in the evening and not at rush hour. Still, the drive makes me feel a little stressed. The interstate is not so frightening when you know what lane to be in, but I have not made this trip often enough to be sure of which lane to be in. So, I am looking forward to doing some things I want to do. Want to get that Christmas scrub sewn. I am hoping that I can keep myself busy and not make this an excuse to eat mindlessly. Any deviation from the normal routine has in the past for me been an excuse to go crazy with the food. I think I am going to make a pot of chili and enjoy that. That shouldn't be too bad a thing. Ok, guess I'd better get off ~ almost bed time. Sorry I ran out of time for personals tonight. No wonder we reach 500 posts ~ look at us ~ it is only December 1st and we are already up to 3 pages. Hope you all rest well. Take care  |
Hello Goldens.
Sorry for the bad news: I found out tonight that my Dad was taken in for an "emergency" sleep study tonight. He met with a pulmonary doc today who arranged it an they installed oxygen in his house this afternoon. I am really scared. I have been worrying about his health for some time. He still works lots of hours but I feel like he hasn't been taking care of himself. With little information, and feeling scared, I called my aunt (his sister) who apparently called him and told him that he needs to quit working. Now he is mad. Anyway, I am scared. Thanks for listening. Rie |
Rie ~ hope you can find out more about your dad today and that he is ok. Keep us posted. Thoughts and prayers for you and your dad.
|
Rie - I am sorry to hear that you Dad isn't doing well. How old is he? You probably said before, but I forgot. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as it sounds. They decided I needed my sleep study while I was in the hospital after my heart surgery. At that time, I was not in any condition to have it done, so I had oxygen in my house until I could go for the sleep study. As a precaution. Maybe that's what they did with your Dad. After the sleep study, they decided I needed a C-Pap and I didn't need the oxygen anymore. We will hope for the best, but I know it is really scary for you to have this going on and not being able to do anything about it. He probably needs to slow down. Maybe the doctor can convince him.

Good Morning GG's,
We finally got snow. Not a lot, just a light dusting on the ground and on the rooftops. Snow isn't a problem right now, it was the rain that came before it. It did a lot of flooding here. Not right in my area, but close. I'm so envious of you that have done Christmas shopping all ready. I have 4 gifts! that's it! I did take DGS shopping, just to look around and see what he was interested in. He's 12 and this is the first year he hasn't wanted all toys. I was shocked at the things he choose! Yellow and purple tennies. We finally found a pair of black with red stiching that we both liked. Whew, I could imagine taking those others home for dad to see. Rie, Prayers for you and your dad. Lots of questions, but I guess you don't have many answers right now. Please keep us informed. Gayle, I remember those inspections. Everyone on their toes. thankfully they don't last too long, or come around too often. Good for you for making good choices! Doesn't it make you feel good! Carol Sue, Good luck with the surgery. Hope the rash heals and everything goes as planned. Z, I have to go in and talk to management about retirement soon. I have a birthday coming up, and hopefully 1 more year to work. But, like you, if I have to work a few more months to make sure that I get maximum beenefits, that's what I will do. 200 a month is a lot, when you figurre you have a lot of years left. Rosie, Love your hair do and your slim face. You look beautiful, daling. Red, YEAH!! on the not smoking, and healthy eating too. Karen, Congratulations on the new house. The lot looks beautiful. big. Is DH ready to get a riding mower? I have to say I admire you right now. I just cleaned the basement and pantry and tried to organzie some. Totally wore me out! Even thinking about moving make me want to crawl into bed and never get out. Connie S, Welcome to the family. Donna, I hope you're feeling better. I am not a good patient either. I hate being sick and i'm not pleasant. Just leave me alone. Vinnie? NOOOO! I still see you as Stephanie. Lynn, Hi to you too. Hope you're not working too hard. Marie, How is the stained glass project coming? Do you make them for gifts too? add me to the list that doesn't like fruit cake. Maybe homemade. I've never had it. Bobbi, I seldom ever make cookies. I eat them. Nothing like warm cookies, just out of the over, The smell is what gets me. You must have a lot of will power! Freda |
Zoe - Good for you for holding out til 66. I am just 3 months older than you. I originally was going to go at 62, but when I got there, I didn't feel I was ready. I was afraid I was going to go batty being home with DH all day. By the time I was 64 I had had enough. My health was bad and I was just dragging myself to work every day. I took my Social Security, but continued to work 2 days a week until I reached the $$ limit I was allowed to make and still collect SS then I quit. Now I am allowed to make as much as I want, but I am content being home and don't want to go back to work. 47 years was long enough. The worst part was I wasn't old enough yet for Medicare and I had to buy my own medical insurance in the interim. Having all these pre-existing conditions made it expensive. But I made it through. I guess you do what you gotta do.
|
Karen31 - Were there pictures of the house you want to buy? If so, I must have missed them. I saw the pictures of your house you're living in now.
Donna, Bobbi, Marie - Homemade fruitcake is a whole nother ball game from what you buy in the stores. Store-bought is actually a joke...something you give to people you hate. Ha Ha Rie - I'm a little embarassed to say this, but BFF....I didn't think the middle F stood for female! LOL Bobbi - Russian Tea Cakes and Tea Time Tassies are totally different things. The tassies are like little miniature pecan pies and Russian Tea Cakes are the ones that look like little snowballs, rolled in powdered sugar. I make them, and they are also called Walnut Butterballs. I too love meatloaf. I use to make a meatloaf every Sunday and dh would take meatloaf sandwiches to work all week. He didn't like deli meat and the meatloaf was probably better for him. For some reason when I make it now, it falls apart when I cut it. What am I doing wrong? Zoe - Lentil soup is my go-to fiber source. I would never eat it for 64 years, but tried it last year and found that I love it. I have several cans of Progresso in the pantry, but can't eat it right now because of my colostomy. And after surgery, I might have to stay away from it for a while. |
