~~September Golden Girls~~

We are about Fitness and Quality of Life after 50...
We are about Fun and Friendship after 50...
We are the Golden Girls...

There is Value in us
There is Power in us
There is Wisdom in us
And Laughter....
We are a rainbow of unique wonders,
There is love in us.
(poem by Dorothy Holmes)

Tell us a little about your life, family and goals. What keeps you motivated? What is the best thing that's happened to you since you passed the 50 mark? 60 mark? Friends laugh, cry and stand by each other, we'll be that to you!

Karen3 08-31-2011 06:40 PM

thank you Bobbie

Bobbolink 08-31-2011 09:07 PM

You're welcome Karen...I was just thinking of you this afternoon when I moved my meyer lemon tree. It's in the house, needs at least 6 hours of sunshine.
I have to take it out of the East window and move it to the South window every day. Good thing it's still tiny!

maryea 08-31-2011 09:38 PM

Didn't get to the Aug thread before it was closed. I was so behind, had to go through the posts and read however I still didn't get them all read and mostly skimmed. It's been a good and just pleasantly busy week. Went to the gym this morning but not for the stretch class. I miss the stretching but I can do it at home, mostly I forget though. :(

Today I cleaned the office and hall way, did a little decluttering, plus did a few banking type tasks getting ready for the first. The window guy came and we ordered the two front bedroom windows. It's been a nice cooler day...I enjoyed being outside while he was here...but no sun until this evening. Thought we'd better get the windows before we have to start paying on the AZ house. Can't remember whether I posted about that, so excuse if repeat but last night our ds called to say he's moving. It isn't what we want but we are ok with it in a way. We are tired of never knowing when it's going to happen. Of course by now he may have changed his mind again.:dizzy: I left him a message to call as I want to ask him to stay and pay until after Oct since we have a trip then but so far no response. I think he's feeling a little ashamed. Well, he should....

Karen3 - I made your BBQ chicken (with seasoned salt) for dinner tonight. Served it with rice and stir-fried cabbage from our garden. We both liked it!

glynne 08-31-2011 09:50 PM

Good evening GG's,

Three days down ~ one more to go. I was only 1/2 hour late tonight. So, I'm actually getting a chance to post. The last few days, I have only been able to read ~ no time left after that to write anything.

Off Friday ~ gotta get up early to take my son to the airport. We are headed to Ohio for my nephews wedding. We are dribbling in a little at a time. Jason on Friday, I go a few days later, then my daughter a few days after me. We all head back home different days too. I will know my way to and from the airport quite well by the end of our trip :dizzy:

I am looking forward to seeing mom and dad and my sister and the kids. Hoping that the drama of earlier this month is over and that people behave so that it is a nice pleasant time for everyone. Praying hard that all goes well.

I'm taking my laptop with me ~ won't be able to get online, but have lots of pictures on there that I think will be fun for mom and dad to see. I made all these folders of different pictures. Kind of like an electronic photo album. I hope you all don't mind, but I even made a folder of pictures of my Golden Girls Family to show mom ~ I quite often tell her about you all ~ so I thought it would be fun for her to see.

It has still been pretty hot every day. I'm looking forward to when it gets cooler so I can enjoy riding my bike again. (Mustang Karen ~ there is still one at that second hand shop here waiting for you ~ LOL ~ when are you coming to get it?)

I'm sorry ~ about out of steam for now ~ will do the personals another time.

Take care all

jess1 08-31-2011 09:52 PM

Good Hola!
VERY quick check in......... just wanted to say "good bye, HOT August" and "hello, lovely September"..... we hope!

Karen31 08-31-2011 10:18 PM

Hello everyone! It has been a busy day but I didn't get the dogs bathed! Instead I went over and helped my aunt clean out her aquarium. That took up most of the afternoon. Love being with her though and our trip should be so much fun!

This afternoon a realtor called and wants to show the house at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. So I've been doing a little bit tonight and if I can get going in the morning I will try to give them their baths tomorrow, if not I will get it done on Thursday. Don't like to be to far behind on the flea and hearworms meds.

Gayle, is that still the same bike you told me about before? Gosh, I thought that you were going to deliver that!!! LOL!!! Just think you and me on our bikes headed down Historic Route 66!! WOuld have to be nothing but fun! I wonder if we could ride them and go to the Drive In theater....wow!!

Karen-- good hearing from you. I hope you have turned that corner and will continue to keep improving from now on! Sending prayers.

Sorry to hear about your house situation. But it sounds like you are almost relieved to know something definite. I hope this doesn't make you change your vacation plans. Sending prayers out for you too.

Bobbi, thanks for getting us set up for September. At least I was able to remember it this time! I hope the new girls are able to find and follow us too.

Well, wanted to stop in and say hello. Guess I'll get a bit more done before I need to shut down for the day.

Have a great night everyone!!!

fitchy 08-31-2011 10:28 PM

Hi, girls! I've been monitoring but too tired to post. Work has been brutal these past weeks, but I remain thankful for a good job. I just had to tell you, I finally decided to get on the scale today ~ first time since my new eating plan ~ and 10 lbs gone, gone, gone! Thanks for being here and sharing your lives.
:dancer::dancer::dancer:

Karen31 08-31-2011 10:32 PM

Fitchy--- glad that you were able to find the new thread. . Congrats on those 10 pounds deleted!! YAY!!!! Sorry your work has been so hectic. Hang in there!

Hello Goldens and Happy September!

Fall is a busy and beautiful season here in Montana and I am fully intending to take advantage of it. Having nothing to wear camping (all my old ratty sweatshirts are comically too big) I went to cabellas yesterday with a couple of my buddies. I found a really nice soft columbia brand fleece jacket in a soft navy blue. Sean and Kenny moved between manly exasperation and girlish giggles as I continued to pick out the wrong sizes. It was funny. We gave up and roamed through the camping gadgets and fly flishing equipment.

Oh well, the weather forcast is for cool weather so I will wear some of my old comfy henlies.

I did a political fundraiser for my favorite commissioner then headed to the pool season ending get-together. My team tied 3rd/4th out of 17 teams. We each got a couple hundred and change plus our individual winnings. I tucked it away in that secret pocket in my purse. ;)

I got asked to play on a really good 3 woman team on the end of the month in the famous town of Butte mt. It shoudl be fun and I was kind of honored.

One more day tomorrow and I have a ton of stuff to get done if I am going to get out of here on time on friday morning. I still have to get through a contract negotiation session tomorrow and then I will be home free (workwise) for the week. The supervisors have taken over my on-call duty for the weekend and I will not need to think about the phone ringing all weekend. It will be nice because it only comes along about twice per year.

Today I made ceviche with shrimp, crab, marinated fish, and all the lovely peppers, cucumbers, and cilantro from the garden. It was perfectly bright, sweet and spicy. Tao said,"what are we celebrating boss?". I smiled and said, "health and good food". ;) It was nice.

See you tomorrow.

Rie

Helllooo GGs

Well I'm almost through Day 5 on the new regime, and so far so good. Today is the first day of spring for us - the weather is definitely becoming warmer, pretty soon I will be the one complaining bitterly about the summer heat ;)

Jane - I hear you on the disappointment of sticking to your eating/exercise plan and the scales not being friendly :?: Try not to be too disheartened and get thrown off track. Maybe with the exercise you're losing inches instead of lbs - perhaps it's time to break out the tape measure?

Karen3 - nice to see you popping in, hope you are feeling in tip top condition soon :)

Rie - I had chills up my spine and tears in my eyes while reading your post about your significant anniversary - you are an inspiration. What a difference a year makes! I hope you continue to enjoy your journey to good health

Karen31 - I'm like you, in the zone for a while, then it all goes pear shaped for a while, then back on the wagon ... I'm just hoping I get back to an overall downward trend, that would make me happy. I think you're right, it's got to be something that clicks and is a lifestyle choice, rather than a way of eating you do for a while :)

Bobbi - never a dull moment for you - WTG on the profit from your Harley Davidson mementoes. Thanks for setting us up for September

Rosey - you are another inspiration to have made such a turnaround in your health. And I see your ticker is going down down down! :carrot:

Lynn - another one who has faced a hard truth about your health and put in the hard yards to make major changes in your life. I feel like I'm such a wimp - all I have to do is stick with my eating/exercise plan, and I'm pretty haphazard at that ... :dizzy:

Mary - sorry to hear about the situation with your son. Here's hoping all gets sorted in a way that best suits you and DH

Gayle - hope all goes well with your holiday plans, and that you have a lovely time at your nephew's wedding

Donna - *hello* - hope all is good with you.

fitchy - yay on 10lbs set free, a truly wonderful result :D I hear you on work pressures - the weekend is almost here.

Toodles!

Hi Everyone,

I am off for a week – start a new class next Tuesday. Today I am going down to South Jersey to take my DF with Altzheimer’s to the movies. She has trouble following plots so I found a comedy – One Day. Hopefully, the plot will not be too difficult to follow.

Have a GREAT day Everyone,

Lynn

Hi Gayle,

Where in OH? Some of my family lives in Canton. I had a good friend in Ashtabula and I used to do a lot of work in Columbus.

Good luck with the potential buyer. My DD & SIL have someone who seems to be interested in their B&B. We are all keeping our fingers crossed.

Hi Koala,

GOOD for you!!!!

Actually, it is the same for all of us – we all have to stick with our eating/exercise plans. Some of us just have a little extra motivation because of health issues.

Karen31 09-01-2011 10:54 AM

Good morning! Don't have a lot of time here this morning since I need to get a few more things ready for the house to show.

Rie, I was reading on your post that you are going to be playing in Butte---I've been there! My Dad sold mining machinery and we would travel with him some for our vacations and he would still incorporate his work into it. But there was a little place in Butte called "Luigis" I guess it was like a neighborhood tavern and he was a one man band. Dad called and asked if he would be able to bring his family there to visit and we had such a good time! When women would get up to go to the bathroom, he had a speaker in the bathroom, and he would get everyone to chant "We know what you're doing." There were pictures on the wall where the birds wings would flap to the time of the music, he played the accordion, drums, harmonica and just about anything else he could reach all at one time! Such happy memoories from there! That is where I finally realized how much my Dad looked like Bing Crosby--- when we walked in the door Luigi said, "Hello again Bing, I see you have your family with you tonight!" Just too much fun.. had to share that little memory with you.

Good morning to everyone else and I will get back later but for now I think I better go chase the vacuum cleaner!!

ellabella 09-01-2011 12:28 PM

Rie/Val….what a beautiful testimony, and what a journey you’re on! Nice, isn’t it, that a byproduct, so to speak, of improving your health and fitness, is that you now look young enough to be your grandchild’s momma? And it’s not just the weight loss – it’s that healthy, happy GLOW that you have about you.
Way to go, Koala!!!! I know all too well how easy it is to slip up…and off when it comes to dieting. I think the only thing that’s really kept my nose to the grindstone this time around is the thought of looking frumpy at my son’s wedding…with the ex looking down his nose. I can tell you THAT’S nevah gonna happen! It’s after the wedding when I’m going to have to REALLY fight with myself to stay on track, though.
Jane, you’ve had a “been there, done that…got the T-shirt” moment. I HATE those moments! You may want to consider what time of day you are weighing yourself, as well as the general weather conditions. I never, ever weigh myself when it’s humid out…and my rings are fitting snugly. I know better. It’s easy to retain fluid when there’s a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, and that can account for several or more extra pounds just from fluid retention. Once it dries up some…and my rings are loose again, I’ll step on the scale, and the results are usually more to my liking. I also weigh less after I’ve been up for a couple of hours and moved around a bit, rather than weighing as soon as I step out of bed in the morning. (Just a few little tips for outsmarting those pesky scales!)
Nice memories, MustangK….sounds like you had a wonderful childhood!
Lynn! A week off! Those are the best kind of weeks! Enjoy – and I hope your friend enjoys the movie. How dear of you to spend that kind of time with her! I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed, too, for the potential B&B buyers.
Good going, Fitchy! Feels good, doesn’t it?
Enjoy the wedding, Gayle…kinda funny that we’ll both be at weddings this weekend…
Karen3…how are you doing today?
Hey, PT….I know you’re happy to be moving from summer to September….I just hope that Autumn sticks around for a while…I’m not looking forward to the “white stuff”.
Mary, is the BBQ chicken recipe of K3’s up in the recipe section? Sounds like something we’d enjoy, too.
Hey, Bobbi….thanx for moving us into our new monthly home….
Marie, I hope you’re doing okay. Looking forward to seeing you back among us. I know it must be hard – doesn’t seem like it was expected?
Hiya Nancy – any new outfits to show off? (I wish I could’ve got my wedding outfit for fifty cents!)
Sounds like you’re having a nice vacay, Lyn…hope you’re taking pictures!
Rosey, hi…and wow, you are moving on down, aren’t you? We’re so proud of you, lady!
Back to work for now….have a nice day, everyone!
Z

Just a quick note to say I'm OP and it's a beautiful day! Didn't get to the gym (overslept remember no alarm clocks here) but I did lose 2.8 # in August. I've decided per some of your advice that I'm only posting my weight loss when it's been a month since I flucuate so much. So I'm starting over again with the sig. ;) Isn't the internet lovely...I can do whatever I want! LOL

My sis called and we talked a long time this am. My dh was coming in saying are you never going to the CU? So he finally went himself. Also asked him to buy a couple grocery items while he's out. I'm going to clean the kitchen today and need to get started as I've fooled around too long today. Still need to do first of month budeting too.

Hope you all have a great day!

Riemontana 09-02-2011 01:15 AM

Hello wonderful friends!

Just a quick post ( as much as I am able) because it is late and I want to get an early start in the morning.

Mary, congrats on the weight loss! I agree on only looking at your weight monthly. Sorry about the house situation.

Zoe, I will think of you gliding around the wedding being gracious and wowing everyone.... frumpy you are NOT. I can't wait to hear about everything.

Gayle, I sincerely hope that you enjoy the family time. It is too sweet that you share us with your mom. Have a safe and happy trip.

Karen, I loved your story. I don't know if Luigi's is still open. I know that he was still around when I was younger. He sold the place but used to hang out there....

Lynn, you are so sweet and kind.

Koala, thanks for your support. Good job on getting back on track. facinating that you are heading into summer....

Jane, hang in there  Dratted Scale!

Fitchy, good job on deleting the pounds!

Donna, Karenfl, Nancy, Rosey, Freda and other lovelies. I look forward to catching up with you later.

Did you see the Robert Redford movie "A River Runs Through it?" it was filmed on the Boulder River in Montana. Picture me there this weekend.... I will be standing in the water waving my flyrod and hoping for a trout to rise and take my fly.... I will sleep in my explorer as we will be camping in a primative camp. I plan to eat well each day and save all my carbs for the s'more that I will eat by the campfire each evening. I will savor all those calories and carbs joyfully. As I watch the stars in an incredibly dark sky, I will make a wish for my lovely golden girl friends. Take care.

Today my BF and I are going to an arboretum outside of Philly and then out to lunch. http://www.business-services.upenn.e.../gardens.shtml

Hi Zoe,

The only way your ex could look down his nose at you is if he stands on a stool! You are BEAUTIFUL at any weight!

I am having more and more trouble spending time with DF. At this point, it is not fun – just tension and responsibility. She keeps thanking me for being there for her. She always remembers who I am. BUT – conversation is impossible. She gets lost from the beginning of a sentence to the end. Unless someone is with her, she leaves a room to get something & forgets to come out. At the movies I have to go to the Ladies room with her or she will never get back to the right movie/seat. Her conversation more and more is about her mother and father and she has a set series of things she says about them over and over.

I feel guilty when I do not get in touch with her, but dread the visits. For as long as she still knows me, I will keep visiting. Hopefully, I will NEVER be in her situation!

Four Steps to a Positive Outlook

Did you know that pessimism has been linked to a higher risk of dying before age 65? On the other hand, expressing positive emotions, such as optimism, is associated with a variety of health benefits: lowered production of the stress hormone cortisol, better immune function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. If you are stressed-out or anxious, which can be either a cause or an effect of a pessimistic outlook, try the following:

1. Take care of yourself by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting adequate sleep. What exercise?

2. Express your emotional reactions honestly so you can effectively deal with what's bothering you. I think like Crabby Maxine on this one.!

3. Confide in someone - your mate, a good friend or a trusted relative. Yes, Thank you Golden Girls for your listening ears.

4. View the cup as half full instead of half empty.

Bobbolink 09-02-2011 10:27 AM

Rie...Me too, me too! Oh I'd love to be standing in the trout stream fishing with you and being awed by the stars at night. We used to take our dd trout fishing years ago, we had a tent that we wore out camping. I can just smell the camp fire, the s'mores and pie dies. You put two slices of bread together with blueberry, apple or cherry pie filling and put in the camp fire pie dies, bake in fire until golden brown, yum-o. I loved the smell of coffee cooking on the camp stove in the misty mornings and the smell of bacon frying. I was really skinny back then, the three of us could eat a whole package of bacon.

Good Hola, All…

Today is a late-start morning at work, so I can get a few minutes to post. My participation has definitely fallen off lately!

Fitchy – congrats!!

Rie – you must be feeling much better? I’m glad that you’re able to do all your fun stuff. Enjoy your weekend! And your ceviche sounded LOVELY.

Gayle – GOOD thoughts for your family reunion! I hope it’s a joyous wedding occasion, with no flaws and familial foibles (say THAT three times fast!). Enjoy, enjoy!

Mustang – my fingers are crossed (but very loosely) for the house showing. When do you leave on your CO adventure? I’m sure you’ve said, but my attention span is, on a good day, about 2 hours. I’m old. I’m tired.

Koala – always good to hear from you! Keep the faith, baby!

PT/Zoe – are you agog and aquiver over the wedding tomorrow? When do you leave to go to the resort? I know it will be beautiful and dignified (if MIL behaves) and that a good time will be had by all. You’ll look lovely, we already know that, and your family will be very proud of you! We’ll want full details and as many pictures as possible (ditto on that, Gayle!).

Lynn – you’re such a good friend to your DF. This should be getting you points somewhere… and I know you don’t do it for those points. You’re a good person!

Bobbi – how are your headaches? And thanks for the inspirational WOW.

I need to get rolling. It's been a long week, full of incompetence and incompetents. I don't want to get started on the experiences with GM's PCP on Wednesday. Suffice to say, I don't know how anything gets accomplished in this sorry (but very pretty!) world of ours!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend! PICTURES and DETAILS!!

Good morning ladies. I thought I had another attack of senioritis today when I logged into the September Golden Girls only to find at the end we were moving on to October. It must have been one from last year cause even though I am not as sharp as I used to be I still know we are just starting September, lol. Anyway my pet peeve is being on a plateau. I really have been working hard and I want some results. I guess I should be thankful I haven't gained. i have started running downhill on my walks. It beats letting Murphy drag me along. Poor dog must be so frustrated. He just loves his walks. Is anyone else doing slim fast?

Wannabehealthy 09-02-2011 01:25 PM

Even though my weight was up and down and back up again all month, I ended the month with a 2 lb net loss.

Carol

maryea 09-02-2011 03:20 PM

Just a quick post, will try and get back later. Just got home from the gym. We have had two lookers and two callers about the rig! There is a large garage sale going on in our cul-de-sac and people are noticing the sign. That's working better than the online ads. If we end up taking on our son's house (or is it really ours?) we will need to sell it for sure I guess. Any tips on selling something like this? What do we need to do once someone decides to buy? We have never sold anything like this.

I didn't get all my work done yesterday so today is a big day plus the window guy is coming to measure.

Oh, BTW, 49 years ago, a very scared couple were about to get married. I can't believe how the years have flown by! But I have never for one moment regretted it! :D

Talk more later....

Karen31 09-02-2011 04:18 PM

:congrat:Happy Anniversary Mary!! :congrat:

Be back later---

glynne 09-02-2011 08:48 PM

Good evening GG's,

It has been a long day today, but a good one. Up at 4am to get my son to the airport. Yippee ~ success. I made the drive and made all the right turns and got him there on time. (He did help me sometimes to know which lane to get in.) I have always ridden along and some one else drove. I have come back from there several times by myself and found my way ok, but never had been the one to drive there. The interstate is stressful for me. I can do it and don't mind so much when I know which lane to be in and can make sure I get in the proper lane soon enough so that I don't end up somewhere where I am not supposed to be. But when I am unsure and the traffic is flying all around me, it stresses me out. Thank goodness we had to go before the height of rush hour.

WW this am ~ up .4 pounds. Could have been worse.

Did a bunch of puttery stuff at home today. Got my kitchen table unearthed :o Clutter piles tend to build up there after a while. I get it cleaned up and then slowly after time ~ get home ~ too tired, too busy to properly take care of the stuff and the clutter pile grows again. I got some other of the cluttered areas taken care of as well. I think that I did not want to get back from my trip to a house that was too messy.

My knees are so stiff and achy. My dr wants me to cut back on the Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few years now. Back along one of the other arthritis meds was taken off the market because so many people had bad effects from taking it. I was concerned and asked my dr if I should be concerned about the Celebrex (different dr than I have now) and she said that the benefits to me of taking it outweighed the risks. I originally took it twice a day, but somewhere along the line cut it back to once a day. I still sometimes felt stiff and always wondered if it was really helping. When the dr told me to cut back, I thought ~ well maybe if she is so concerned about it ~ I should just quit taking it all together. Oh my ~ there was the answer about rather it was really helping or not. I was so stiff and achy with out it. I started back taking it ~ but just every other day. It is a little better. After I have been moving around for a while it isn't so bad, but every time I sit and rest a few minutes, I stiffen up just that quick and when I get up I have to start with the stiffness and pain all over again. I wish the dr had just let me alone with that med.

Guess I will go ~ maybe I can get a couple more things done. Sorry to have whined about my aches and pains. Back to work tomorrow ~ 3 more days, the I get some vacation time. Yippee :carrot::carrot:

Sorry I didn't get any personals done today. I had thought that when I went on my trip next week, that I would be able to keep up with you all ~ I can get 3FC and FB on my phone. But my son is up there now ~ he has the same cell phone service we have and he can't get any reception (they are sort of out in the country).

Hope you all have had a nice day.

Take care

Thanks for the Anniversary congrats here and on FB. It was a good day. The people who called about the Rig never did come to see it but we had a walk-in from the neighbors garage sale. He also lives not far from us. But he was only interested in the pickup and said he'd wait until the trailer sold and if the pickup was still there he might come back.

Our son says it will be a while before they can actually move (which I figured) so we will have time to prepare a bit at least. He has promised to give us at least 30 days and probably more notice which is helpful. He recognizes the mistake he has made moving into this house and away from his girls and i know he feels badly about what he has done to us but of course that does not help us. And he still does not understand how it is to have this happen at our ages. But I guess when you are young (36 next month) it is hard to understand that.

Tonight we went Outback Steakhouse. Not at all good for a dieter...but so good. I planned to eat 1/2 my steak and the salad, but ended up we sharing the bloomin' onion (the smell got to us as we entered), and I had a baked potato plus we shared a sampler dessert. So you can see the obvious bad but the good is I did only eat 1/2 my steak, had the dressing on the side and had very very little on my salad...I'm not a salad dressing fan anyway, and I had asked for the potato toppings on the side but sadly I used them all as they didn't give me as much as some restaurants do. Oh and I only had one very small slice of the bread with a little butter on it. The waiter gave us the sampler dessert free and I'm sure glad it was the sampler as it was still plenty big but oh, so good!! We shared it but to be honest I had the biggest share. :o I know I had way too many calories and carbs in this one meal but I hadn't eaten much otherwise today and I felt only pleasantly full when I left, but my dh said he felt stuffed. That man just can't handle much food anymore...:?: Seriously I wish I were like him! :^:

He was very tired when we got home but did get a nice rest in his recliner...know he was tired because no TV! His eyes were both droopy when we left the restaurant and the right one (double vision one) was almost closed!

Tomorrow back to my diet and I actually kinda look forward to it...still no time for personals...bed (and my dh) is calling me! :D

fitchy 09-03-2011 02:10 AM

Hi GGs! Thanks for all the attagirls and the happy dancing! Tonight I signed onto a 1-month challenge. I'm going to commit to losing 7 lbs by the end of September to get out of the 240s. I am feeling so fantastic with my current eating plan; it has been so easy to stay OP that I think I can continue indefinitely.

I don't think I mentioned this before, but I have Type 2 diabetes. My blood sugar has leveled off, and my blood pressure is great.

Gayle, I have terrible arthritis in my left knee due to an old injury/surgery. I have also cut my Celebrex back to once every other day. Have you ever heard of the anti-inflammatory diet? If not, you might check it out. It really really works. The food plan I'm on now is compatible with it, so I am getting double benefits from behaving myself.

One of these days I'll feel comfortable enough with all of you to do personals. Right now, I'm just trying to keep track of you! Thank you for sharing your lives.

Hugs,
Fitchy

glynne 09-03-2011 08:31 AM

Fitchy ~ can you tell me more about that anti inflamatory diet? I am doing weight watchers right now ~ is it something that I could incorporate into that?

Thank you for the help/suggestion

Bobbolink 09-03-2011 09:46 AM

Good Morning, just a quick fly by for me today. Glynne...I have the 'ritis boys' in my lower back and the same weird thing happens to me when I sit for a bit. I feel like an old, old cripple when first getting up but by the time I reach the kitchen the pain and stiffness is all gone.

Quote:

After I have been moving around for a while it isn't so bad, but every time I sit and rest a few minutes, I stiffen up just that quick and when I get up I have to start with the stiffness and pain all over again. I wish the dr had just let me alone with that med.

I've pretty much figured out why I was having all those migraine headaches popping up during the night. I'm allergic to something, either dust mites, Charlie's hair, or pollen. I sleep with the window wide open every night, or at least I used to. Now I have the window sealed, the bedroom door shut all the time and the air purifier running. I dust everything every morning, vacumn or use a dry dust mop under the bed and the dressers. It just amazes me that I'm still getting dust on the mop daily? But then we have fields on all four sides of our property, it's all sweet corn this year. After I settle the two MRI bills, I'm going to get tested for allergies, see what exactly is bothering me. As for the headaches, they are history. Sometimes I'll get a slight one during the day, our windows are open in the rest of the house.
Gosh, I didn't mean to write a story here, it was suppose to be a quick fly by.
Have a great week-end everyone!

glynne 09-03-2011 09:50 AM

Awesome Bobbi about the headaches being history :carrot::carrot::carrot::carrot::carrot::carrot:

Now hope you can figure out what you are allergic to.

To everyone else ~ hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Take care

ladyinweighting 09-03-2011 11:18 AM

Hi Everyone,

No special plans for the weekend. I have stuff to do for my courses – 1 begins on Tuesday and the other begins on Nov 1. Nice to have plenty of time to work on these.

Today is a LOVELY day here in PA. Able to keep the windows open and the AC off.

Have a great weekend,

Lynn

Hi Bobbi,

I agree with everything! Including your comments! (Except about the EXERCISE - I LOVE my exercise!)

I don’t know about the points motivation. If I really try to figure out why, I think it is because I hope someone would come visit me if I were in her situation.

Hi Grammy,

To help me get past plateaus, I used to keep a chart of my daily weights. For example,
12 days at 170
9 days at 169
10 days at 168

And so forth. Basically, I typically found that I had not been at the same weight for as long as I thought. Also, I loved adding my next lower number.

Hi Fitchy,

Several of us on this thread have Type 2 diabetes. I take meds, but do not need insulin. So far, the meds, diet, and exercise are keeping my BS numbers good.

Hi Bobbi,

This is EXCELLENT news! I am SO HAPPY to hear those headaches are almost gone!

Karen31 09-03-2011 12:05 PM

Good Morning! I had such a nice evening last night. Well, actually the day was all pretty nice. I got up bright and early at 9:30, yeah I know it felt good! And then fixed my slim fast shake and then played in here on the “puter” for awhile. Got a few things done in the morning and then before I knew it, it was time for lunch. Fixed a slim fast vanilla shake with strawberries in the blender, Love that.
Then I figured it was just time to get those girls bathed! So I got that done and that took about 1 ½ hours start to finish. They love all the attention they get AFTER I bathed them! Then it was time for me to take a shower before going to the store. By this time I smelled like a wet dog for sure! Went to Wal-Mart and picked up groceries there and then on to Aldis for a few things there. Tim grilled burgers and I fixed a salad and corn on the cob. After eating we decided to see if the pool was going to feel to cold to swim, spent about an hour in the pool just bobbing along…. We needed to do a shock treatment to it (always do that on Friday night after swimming). Came in the house and got out of wet bathing suits and decided it was a nice night for a ride with the TOP DOWN on the Mustang! So we drove around for awhile, the night was perfect for it, then stopped in at Brahms for an ice cream cone! OK---I was bad but it was so good!! I had a cherry/praline cone and Tim had a Hot Fudge Sundae. Really enjoyed the evening.

Rie, I would be so surprised if Luigi is even still alive. He was way up there in age when we saw him that time. I can remember he even let me come up and play some instruments with him, can’t remember what. But sure was fun times. He even sent us a wedding gift when we got married in 1970. And I sent him an 8 x 10 picture of us at the wedding. Really lots of fun times. I guess we got to see more places growing up since my Dad sold mining machinery and traveled 13 states plus Canada and Old Mexico. We did go to Canada but we never went to Old Mexico with him. Enjoy your camping weekend.

Never got any feedback on the house showing. Who knows… I think I will take a couple pictures of the pool with the Date/time stamp on it because we will be closing it up within the next couple weeks. I can email those to my brother and if anyone is curious as to what condition the pool is under the Winter Cover he will have pics with the date on them.

Bobbi, glad to hear about those headaches.. Hope you can find out just what you might be allergic to. Thanks for the Positive Outlook---I have to agree with you on most of them!

Donna, we will be leaving the last week in Sept. I sure hope we can get some good pics of the Aspens changing out there! I guess we will be included in that group of “leaf peepers” that march up and down the highways every year!

Lynn, you ARE a very good friend to care so much for your friend. I read somewhere about a man that used to go and visit his wife in the “home” everyday without fail. One time someone asked him why he did that because she didn’t even know if he was there or not. His answer, “I know she is there” Thought that was a great answer.

Hi grammygal--I know it gets frustrating and we have all been there… Shoot I think I have been pretty much on a plateau ever since the end of April! I just keep bouncing around with the same 3 pounds. Now getting ready to vacation again so will have to be very careful that I don’t let everything get completely our of hand. Me and my Wii need to become friends again!

Carol-- 2 pounds is great! I haven’t even moved my ticker in quite awhile.. I think I will leave it until I can move it down again. I hate this up and down!!!

Zoe and Gayle, I think you are both going to weddings this weekend. Have a safe trip and we look forward to lots of pictures!

Well, hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend! I’m sorry if I didn’t get to you this time but I need to stop this book!!

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!!

maryea 09-03-2011 12:53 PM

Good morning! It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and the people are already starting to come to the neighbor's garage sale so we figured we'd better get up and ready in case someone sees our for sale sign and wants to look at the RV. Since our son seems to be taking his time about moving, selling the rig is not quite as crucial (how things change day by day!) but since we never know with those kids we might as well continue to try.

After eating that big meal last night, I did not gain! :carrot: Didn't lose but at least I didn't gain, so will try to be OP today.

I have a lot today today so again, no time for personals...maybe later.

Marie 09-03-2011 02:10 PM

Morning GGs,

First I want to thank you all for the kind thoughts over the past week. It is something I hope not to do again for some time. But as my father is int he mid-80s and having issues, I wouldn't be too surprised if we're back in MN soon. I truly hope not. No offense Bobbi, but I really don't like your state anymore. ;) Zoe, I'm thinking of you today. I read/skimmed the backlog of posts and I'm thinking the wedding is this weekend. 14 pounds is fabulous and you'll get rid of the other 6 over the next months. BTW, the iPad is easier than any other gadget I've used. I don't think I'd ever buy a kindle just because it is limiting on what it can do. Donna, Kai said she called SamCat several times to moan about her lonesome woes. BTW, my animal behaviorist took care of them and my neighbor visited them daily (or several times daily as the pile of dog treats is nearly gone). So the doggies were taken care of. They were quite happy last night when we got home. Do expect Kai to call SamCat a few more times because that husky holds a grudge and she has quite a big one at the moment. Tomorrow morning I'm going to take her scoot-joring and that should make her happy. Val, I'm awed by your anniversary story. You are an inspiration. BTW, you should go back to the jacka$$ dermatologist and strut your stuff. I guess the dr missed bedside manner day in med school. Mary, I'm sorry to hear about the continued son woes. Will you sell the house you bougth for him? Gayle, enjoy your reunion. Fitchy, :carrot:on the lost pounds. Grannygal, welcome and I am sorry about the loss of your DH a couple years ago. I bet you'll have a blast on the cruise. Lynn, I'm thinking of you as your half marathon is on the horizon. Donna, I'm so please GM is doing well. Better than well. That's awesome. Koala, you and I will make our pack to be on track and lose those pesky pounds. KarenFL, antibiotics knock me out too. I hope this your last round. Nancy, how's the swing time going? OK, my personals were by memory and I know there were other new GGs so I will give a blanket welcome and say hi to everyone I missed. I'm going forward from this point. Six pages of 3FC was a tad overwhelming.

Since my kitchen is limited on food and I refuse to leave my house (except for the doggie hike this am and swim in my pool this afternoon) I decided to make bread. I have fresh whole wheat bread baking in the machine and it smells divine. DH picked strawberries before breakfast and so I had some fresh produce. I'm hoping I can find enough frozen produce to make it until Tuesday because I'm not going shopping.

BTW, taking a spur of the minute road trip is difficult to diet on. DH and I usually have planned a trip and have foods ready. We're short on $$$ so we did the budget meals. Aka the dollar menu at McD. My 23 year boycott on fast food burgers came to a halt at about 1:00 Monday morning. Hungry made pickiness take a nosedive. I have no idea on the nutritional specs for a plain McDouble but I'm guessing it wasn't pretty. Not out to eat for a long time for me. I definitely had my fill of junk food. And my homemade mocha is absolutely fabulous this morning. Starbucks and Caribou Coffee offerings aren't nearly as good.

I think that's about it for now. I haven't written in over a week but I did plot as I tried to sleep in the car. So now we'll see how I did. Chat with you all later and please know how much I missed you all.
Marie

fitchy 09-03-2011 02:32 PM

Gayle, this is the diet I was talking about: http://amzn.to/pMrfnw

There are many versions of the diet, but Dr. Black's is the one I follow to the extent I can. It doesn't require 100% compliance to get amazing results. I'm sure you could incorporate it into your food plan; primarily it is a list of inflammatory foods to avoid. There is also a large recipe section in the book.

I would highly recommend that anyone with inflammatory arthritis give it a read.

Happy weekend everyone..its cloudy but not raining:) another busy couple of days for me.i was catching up on laundry and gizmo was keeping me company he'd root around in my sock basket and run out with it. it took me a few to realize what he was doing so i watched him for awhile. he has this little strutting taking care of business walk or trot and he was bent on emptying the sock basket and he did so CUTE. i just had to laugh even as i picked up 11 socks on the carpet :dizzy: we went out to eat last night. usually dh brother and girlfriend take mil out every friday nite and sometimes we join them. we picked her up and i dont think we will be doing that with her to many more times. she was so confused mentally and then would get angry at us sigh ,i feel sorry for her,and physically she cant walk so needs help in her wheel chair. she loves to eat out and we want to keep her life as normal as possible but i dont think she enjoyed herself last nite. i had grilled halibutt and a salad yummy. Ive been working on my quilt, sewing all the little squares together. Bobbie am glad you are solving the mystery head aches. zoe you look fabulous in your wedding attire and congrats on the awsome loss.marie i am glad you are home and back with your fur babies.maryea happy belated anniversary  karen31 i so enjoyed ginger and sissy getting there self groomed, and yes i spoil my puppies too.lynn i admire you for staying true to your friend,i'm doing the same with my mil even when shes difficult.glynne hope all goes well on your trip for the wedding.hoping all us "GG" are having a great weekend hello and  for all rosey

maryea 09-03-2011 08:18 PM

Here I am back again for some personals. I can't believe I got everything done today...I did dust and vacuum very quickly, but I finished yesterday's work and did all I really had to do today. Could of done more but it can wait til next Saturday. I pulled THREE weeds in the front yard and called that my yard work for this weekend. Something is better than nothing, right?!! :D

I've been OP all day so far so hopefully tonight I will do well too. After last night's meal I'd better!

Rosey - Enjoy reading about your puppy. I can imagine it in my head as I read. Sorry about your mil...that must be really hard on her and you too.
Thanks for the anniversary congrat too. Next year is our 50th! I can't believe it! Where have all the years gone...

Fitchy - I will get the book you recommended when I can...right now I have too many books plus the kindle books...but it sounds like something that would probably help me. I don't have much arthritis (if any, not sure) but I do tend to have a lot of inflammation here and there. I have a gene that only 8% of the population has and it is shown to be a tendency to inflammatory conditions. So far I have had inflammation in my right leg...sometimes it seems to be muscle and other times nerve, sometimes it is a similiar condition in my back and I also have a history of iritis (inflammation of the iris). Thank God they have ruled out MS and I think the iritis was at least helped along by my taking Fosamax for a few years. Against doctor's orders I stopped taking it and I have only had one episode since. And that Fosamax stays in the bones for a very long time...my last density test showed no more osteoporosis. Hopefully it will stay that way. My only problem with eating the book's way is that I'd probably have to eliminate some of my favorite foods...like my mocha:^::^:

Marie - Glad to read your posts again! Missed you! Now you better stop talking so positively about the iPad because you are making me want one even more!! I just have to get along with my Kindle for a while or dh is going to get upset! I do love my Kindle for at the gym esp. Last night our son said it will probably be several months before they can actually move...that is good cause the further out we go the more likely the value will go up so I hope it will turn into a year or more.:^: It's very low right now. We want to keep him in there and paying the mortgage as long as we can. We think he is making another mistake moving anyway..for himself, not just us (but of course definitely for us!). And yes, we will try to sell it but right now it is not worth much and there are a lot of empty houses in the area. His house is valued a bit higher than some of them but not by much. But the fact is, what difference does it make how much its valued if you can't get a buyer?! Our plan right now is to go down there, find a real estate person we like (I will try online but still want to meet them), and set up our terms etc., and stay long enough to check out the house and yard and make sure it looks really good. Then we will come home and hope it sells. The bank may still make us pay the difference (it will be a short-sale)...so we may have to get some legal advice but we also may just have to pay the difference to get out of this mess.
If it doesn't sell in six months, we plan to try and rent it. Not crazy about that idea but if we can get a good renter, it might pay off as hopefully the house will go up in value. Really though we just want our name off that loan, that's all we want!

Your bread sounds so good...I'm thinking about making a lighter zucchini bread. Still scared to have it in the house but there are all these zucchini in our garden just waiting for me to do something with them. We have had grilled and stir-fry zucchini until we are sick of it and we normally love it!

I agree that most bought mochas can't compare to my homemade kind! I do like the mocha freeze at Costco...but it is about 385 calories and 3 or 4 carb servings if I remember correctly! That alone makes mine at 155 calories (I use a little more milk than the recipe calls for) and less than 2 carb serv sound better.

Well, dh is hungry so I need to fix dinner...can you tell why we've been married so long LOL He's hungry and I jump...;) Tonight is very simple...I'm heating up frozen Black Angus Cheeseburgers and making a salad (hope to use up at least one cucumber from the MANY I have from the garden!). The Cheeseburger is a bit much for me...but since I've had very little calories and carbs today I think it's doable.

Talk later....

[QUOTE=ladyinweighting;4018806]

Hi Gayle,

I have been taking Celebrex twice a day for YEARS! I know all about the problems, but I have tried several times to get off it & the arthritis pain is more than I am willing to put up with.

Hi Lynn ~ I don't think I am going to be able quit taking the celebrex or even cut back. I quit taking it and was miserable. So, I thought maybe if I took it every other day ~ that would work and be a compromise. I can't do it. I am so stiff ~ when I get up I can barely walk. And my knee hurts so bad. When I lay down to go to sleep at night ~ I hurt all over and can't sleep. I don't think I can put up with this pain either.

And this is messing up my sleep and is very frustrating too ~ I have struggled now for (starting into my 3rd year) with a c-pap and sleep apnea. Have finally gotten the right combination of mask, meds and routine, and finally felt like things were falling into place and I was sleeping better and feeling better. Now, my regular dr messing with this celebrex ~ when I lay down to go to sleep at night ~ I hurt all over and can't sleep . . Discouraging ~ I get one thing straightened out and they change something and it messes things up and I feel like I am starting all over again.

I was even making an attemp to make exercise a regular part of my day ~ doing so-so at that. But with this pain, ~ all I am wanting to do is just sit. I think then that it would be better to take the medicine and feel better than to sit around and do nothing. That can't be good for me.

If the celebrex is so bad for me ~ I wish she could come up with something else that would help. Such a dilema ~ stop taking the med to cut the health risks ~ but be barely able to walk and in pain and miserable.

I'm sorry to be so whiny ~ thank you all for listening.

Coming up for air :-)

Hi everyone,

I've finally come to the end of my 12 straight days of work and had an actual day off today, so I'm taking advantage of that fact and saying hello to all of you before going to bed, just because I actually HAVE TIME. :carrot: I'm grateful for the jobs I have, especially after this past 6 months and losing both of my prior jobs within 2 weeks of each other -- but now it seems I'm working longer to earn less. Oh well, it's a start!

Rie, you commented once about how hard it is to work at home. You were so right! I've been doing it for 14 years, since my oldest was 1-1/2, so I've always had a child, or 2 or 3, while trying to do so (maybe better that way as I don't have the luxury of knowing how different it could be without kids LOL). I love being at home and being able to be involved at their schools, etc., but it definitely makes for some long days with all the interruptions. Definitely some trade offs. School starts again on Tuesday, so I'm hoping to get into a good routine and find a way to get most of my work down while they are in school so I can have some time with them in the evenings...but time will tell. This year they are all in different schools with different schedules (one high school, one middle school and one elementary school) so it's a little daunting. ;-)

I was doing well with my diet, even though every ounce for me always seems to be so hard fought. Then came the annual extended family camping trip, which was awesome, a couple of weeks ago. I actually planned healthy snacks, ate with portion control and good choices, got more exercise with nature hikes, kayaking, etc., and was really proud of myself. I came home and got on the scale and had actually gained 2 pounds. So depressing. And of course I fell off the wagon (not majorly, thankfully) in "revenge" for a couple of days until things straightened out again and I had a loss, which then made me try harder. Crazy how the scale can do that to us, isn't it? My biggest stumbling block is still the exercise part, and trying to find the time to incorporate that with work and with the kids and school, but I'm determined. For now, it will just be walking -- if finances improve, a gym would be awesome, as I know that building muscle will help keep my metabolism going (not to mention the other benefits). I have a little under 2 months left to prove to my doctor that I can lower my lab values on my own without more diagnoses and meds, so I'm focused on that short term, and on me long term. :-)

I'm really hoping to be a more regular member soon, once school routines and work fall into place, and, like Fitchy, doing personals once I've been around more frequently. Thank you all for the warm welcome -- you are an amazing group of women and I look forward to getting to know you all better and sharing this journey we are all on!
