Lou - haha, I wouldn't touch canned okra with a 10 foot pole, but I was introduced to pickled okra by one of the founders of 3FC, and love it! What kinds of berries do you have? Regardless, I find them to be scrumptious in a smoothie. Several times in the past few days, I've seen experts on tv explaining the many, many virtues of cruciferous veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, etc. I like to dip them in a mixture of salsa with a dab of Ranch dressing added. Yum. Like you, I'm all for safety for children, but my DD Katie said I'm not to place a blanket on the baby, because according to the new findings, he might suffocate. Makes me wonder how our kids lived to tell it.
Gotta scoot! Later, taters! |
Good Morning All,
Jane - I'd be happy to have the thread opened up to more folks. Salsa & ranch mixed together makes a good dressing for salad too. By the way, you may find time flies till baby Holden arrives, but if memory serves, those last weeks crawl for Momma. LOL! Lou - Glad to hear you are back on track Adding berries back first is a good idea. They are the lowest carb fruits. Yum, okra. Love fresh or frozen in gumbos or tossed in olive oil & oven roasted at high temp until it browns. Another use is to throw a bunch of whole fresh okra pods into a pot of fresh crowder peas or butterbeans. Of course, you have to face the sliminess of okra when cooked this way. Canned okra doesn't gross me out, but doesn't work for me except in soups or peas/beans. Hope everyone is having a wonderful on-plan week. I have been doing fine with under 100 gms of carbs, but started losing again, which seemed odd til I looked back in my food diary. I had been eating more veggies & that was just filling me up faster, so less calories. I'm going to add more fat to the veggies. It sure is a scary balancing act to maintain. I've found all along that it's just as dynamic a process as losing was & maybe even harder. Everyone have a great day & God bless. |
Morning all. Just a quick flyby this morning. Posted on the Golden thread, and will come back here tonight and do a real check in.
Had to laugh about the okra, I feel the same way!!! I also don't like the "squeak" of canned zucchini in Italian tomatoes, although I love the taste, and adore zucchini most ways. I am fine with the "counters" title. It took me a minute, though when I first clicked on it to know I was in the right place, lol. |
Just love the weight bars. 1 more pound and I have less then 50 lbs to loss. Sounds like alot but have lost 23 already to it is in sight.
|
Hello to anyone reading this.
Joyful R - veggies are so good for filling us up, and good for us, too. I found out the hard way that maintenance is just as hard, if not harder, than losing. When I lost before, I wasn't prepared for that. But I will be, this time! Bunti - zucchini is so good! The only way Neal likes it is in a loaf of bread, haha. But I eat it all the time. Right now I am liking the yellow squashes in my salads. Healthygoals - welcome to our little part of 3FC. A big Whoo Hoo for you, losing 23 pounds! What kind of program are you following? Keep coming back for support and encouragement. I've been busy around the house, and also got some paperwork done. Son and grandson visited for awhile, and so did one of my sisters and her DH. Food is OP, and I'm hoping for a nice loss tomorrow on weigh-in. Stay warm and toasty! |
Is anyone on the Mediteranean Diet?
I just read about this in the 3fatchicks book. It seems that this and the Body for Life would work well together. Does anyone have info on that?
 SO mad at me! I'm OD-ing on carbs today... 2 pieces of pita bread, 2 flat rolls this morning, package of cheese crackers, handful of peanuts (ok, that's a fat) UGHHHH. And I haven't even faced dinner yet! I had been doing so well. :( Just feeling this roll of fat over my jeans is very depressing. Maybe I need to buy larger jeans! ;) OK, I can handle this! When I look at it this isn't as bad as most binges, or even most normal days, for me. I need to take control NOW and not eat anything other than veggies & meat for the rest of the day. I CAN DO THIS. (Any one reading this please pray for me, I'm not really sure I can do this.) Can anyone tell me about the Wii Fitness? |
Hello Gwen! I wish I could answer some of your questions but I just don't know anything about the book, diet or wii fitness. We do have a wii but just box, golf, bowl, etc with it. I've heard good things about the fitness, though. Yes, you can do this! Report back and keep us updated. I can't be the only one who drops the ball and reports back, okay? :^:
Hello healthygoals! Congrats on the 23# loss! Bunti, I have never had canned zucchini but I do love zucchini and tomatoes with some mozzarella or parmesan sprinkled on top :D joyfull retiree, I'm trying really hard to sympathize with your unintentional weight loss but so far......:dizzy: Just kidding! Congrats on doing so well that you have to remember to add more  Jane, I stockpile any kind of berry I can find. I have always loved berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc) since I was a kid. My dad always had part of the yard dedicated (we lived on 10+ acres) to berry bushes and we could go out there and pick to our content. I grew up with farm fresh veggies/fruits and developed a life long love. I have discovered coconut milk and came up with my own recipe the other day. I am missing pudding and the SF jello and yogurt just weren't doing it for me so I mixed in some coconut milk with SF strawberry jello, greek yogurt (0%fat) and it was rich, creamy, decadent and kept me filled up for HOURS. I am going to find some lower fat coconut milk and try it again with cocoa powder and splenda. The coconut milk is very low in carbs (3g). SB encourages using other types of 'milk' so I think (other than the fat content) this is phase one appropriate. If you know I'm wrong, please don't hesitate to tell me because I'm going out tomorrow to pick some up. |
Good Morning All,
Bunti - Maybe I should start an okra lover's thread. There must be someone else out there as enamoured as I of the big O. Is there any other veggie as maligned as the humble pod of okra? healthygoals - Welcome & Congrats on the 23 lb. loss. Keep up the good work & tell us what's working for you. Jane - Impart some wisdom about maintenance. What were some of the pitfalls you encountered? What was your main downfall? After 1 year, maintence still feels new to me. Gwen - Welcome to the "How Many Times Have I fallen?" club. Your plan of getting back on track with just meat & veggies is a good one with a proven track record. Sorry, I can't help you with info about those 2 plans working together. Let us know how it works out for you. Lou - What a great idea with the coconut milk. I have never, ever in my life been in a position where I wanted to stop losing weight, so this is a very "weird" situation. Then, after I shot off my big mouth yesterday I way overate. Thankfully, I am back on track with a nice protein-packed breakfast this morning. My question for anyone reading this post is, "DO ANY OF YOU GET HUNGRIER AFTER EATING MORE FAT OR AFTER EATING BEEF?" I ate a fatty steak with grilled onions on a slice of lite WW toast & some cabbage sauteed in butter spray for lunch yesterday, & instead of being satisfied, I just kept getting hungrier & hungrier. Instead of straight protein to calm things down, I had a small apple & 2 T. PB about 45 mins. later when I'd become so ravenous I could have gnawed on my arm. It went downhill from there til I was so stuffed I'd have been sick if I ate anymore. It was definitely lunch that set me off & that was only 13 net carbs, so it had to be the beef. I don't eat a lot of beef & this was a higher fat cut, which also made the meal higher fat & calorie than usual for me. Strangely, I had lost another 1/2 lb this AM. I am puzzled. Any advice is welcome. Everyone have a great day & God bless. |
Good morning,
Gwen - are you talking about the 3 Fat Chicks on a Diet book written by the 3 sisters who founded this site? If so, please check out my story on pages 8 (last paragraph) and 9. I had lost 85 of 100 pounds then, and they graciously asked me to be interviewed for the book. It was really cool to see the book on the shelves of Barnes and Noble and other bookstores! I've met the sisters, and they are 3 of the nicest people ever. On days when you overeat, it's my suggestion that you get right back OP on your next meal. Don't wait until tomorrow or there will likely be even more damage in the meantime. I don't do Wii fit, but it seems lots of people love it. Lou - we have berries where I live, too. Blackberries, strawberries, and wild raspberries, but we are known for our melons. Watermelons and cantaloupe are grown right out my back door. I found a wonderful recipe for sf cranberry sauce, and can't find any cranberries. I thought I'd get some frozen ones, but no luck. I checked on the coconut milk, but all I could gather was that it's probably ok as long as it doesn't have HFCS in it. Where it's on their list or not, if it's working for you, I'd go ahead with it anyway. Your dessert sounds so good! I do like the Jello sf cooked pudding. (So much better than the instant!) But homemade foods are so much better for us - no mystery ingredients! Joyful R -I had 2 huge pitfalls at maintenance. The first was that I wasn't prepared for it. One day my sister told me I should stop losing because my face was getting all wrinkly, so I stopped. The other problem was that, while I was losing, I was darned near perfect all along. I didn't allow points (I was on WW back then) for such things as a piece of birthday cake, or any pleasure foods at all, but I kept OP even though I was not happy. Then, when I reintroduced them, I went waaaay overboard, real fast. I lost control and felt awful. I ended up gaining it all back over the next 6 years, plus a few more. As for your other question, no, I'd say beef or fat doesn't set me off, but sweets and other carbs sure can. Also, I can't even keep any kinds of chips in the house. You are a smart cookie to recognize that about yourself, & I'd try to avoid it, or plan ahead to have a small amount. Today I'll be getting some things ready for the family dinner tomorrow. Need to clean the house, and prep some food. We got more snow overnight, and it wasn't expected! As soon as I get some free time, I'm going to flip through the seed catalogs for some ideas to enhance the flowers around the house and that will take my mind off the snow. Have a good Saturday. Stay warm! :grouphug: |
Jane - YES -- I'll read page 8-9 today. Just finished the book last night and it's been very inspirational.
Joyful - I think that a handful of almonds set me off on my binge. I ate them before bed Thursday and woke up ravenous. Is it possible? I know carbs will set off a binge, but nuts? Maybe it was the sugar in the mix (very light) Could there have been sauce or hidden carbs in your dinner? Last night I went straight from work to the gym and fought through knee pain to stay on the elliptical for 23 minutes (burned 211 cal - seemed like a lot more sweat and pain than 211 cal:mad:) Then, instead of leaving as I have been, I jumped on the arm and leg machines for another 20. Just kept going to another machine until all parts were hit and feeling worked. Definitely worth the extra 20 minutes! It felt SOOOOO good! Then I went home and ate a pack of frozen green beans w/slivered almonds, 2 morning star tomatoe basil burgers with 1 slice cheese (totally satisfies pizza cravings) My daughter came over with movie and we had ONE dove bar each (chocolate dipped chocolate goodness - 250 cal.) Still at 204 this morning:( But still proud of myself and feeling good after the exercize and healthy choices last night. One day at a time. No nuts or ice cream today!! |
Counting Carb,s
Hi Jane
I am new too this site and I have been been trying too do a low carb plan i am doing a my own plan of just keeping carbs too 100 gr eating mostly lean meat, chicken vegs, salads cott cheese and sf jello . Just started about 10 days ago I am down about 5 lb,s . I wounld like too join this group maybe I will stick with making this work as I have about 70 lb,s too loss And this is the plan my Dr wants me on so she will be happy when I see her next month LoL Thank,s mcgoo |
Welcome mcgoo! My doctor wants me to eat this way too. Let me encourage you and congratulate you too! 5# is awesome!!!
Gwen, good job on all that exercise!!! Jane, thanks for checking on the coconut milk. No, this has no HFCS. No added sugar but has a total of 2gr sugar (naturally present in the coconut?). Made some chocolate 'pudding' but it's not as tasty as the SF Jello I had the day before. I guess that's because the cocoa doesn't want to dissolve like the SF jello. Today I try making a smoothie with the coconut milk and the SF Jello. I'll let you know how that works out.... joyfullretiree & Bunti, I will join the okra club--love it fried, pickled, etc but just can't get past the slime when it's canned. Went to whole foods today and picked up some groceries. Ready for the weekend! Have a great one, :carrot: Lou |
Hi Everyone
Jane Thanks for telling me about this group and the invite. I see many are counting carbs. I mostly do low carb. I have a calorie book that says we should count calories and carbs, but I have to admit that I don't like doing both. I was diagnosed T2 diabetic back in June and got it under control and got all my numbers down with low carb... and my doc was so pleased with my progress. I got bored with it and went on the new WW points plus plan, but when I do that or count calories I have a tendency to overdo the carbs. It will be nice to be a part of this group. I'll join the okra group too. In fact, I love them cooked any way. Okra, zucchini and asparagus are my favorite veggies. I've got to go back and read and learn more about you guys and look forward to getting to know y'all. |
Good Morning All,
Jane - Thanks for sharing what happened when you regained. I think what scares me most is knowing that the weight creeping back on can happen so easily. So, maybe vigilance without obsessing? Hopefully, we'll all get there. I think you are right about just limiting beef consumption. That, along with a commitment to stop worrying about every little thing. We'll have to see how that goes. Gwen - Surely there's not enough sugar in that amount of nuts to set you off? My downfall is almost always carbs & especially sugar, but on the rare occasion, I just crash for some reason that doesn't make sense to me. Good for you to be back on plan. mcgoo - Happy to have you join us & congrats on losing that 5 lbs. Your plan sounds very similar to how many of us are eating. Lou - I am really enjoying hearing about the different recipes you're trying. Please keep sharing. pattygirl - Welcome! Sorry to hear about the Diabetes diagnosis, but glad to know you got it under control pretty fast. It's takes dedication to do that. Did your doctor prescribe meds or just advise diet & exercise? How many carbs do you eat daily? Everyone have a great day & God bless. |
joyful retiree Thanks for the welcome.
Actually, I've just come off of WW Pts and started Counting Calories and Carbs so I'm experimenting right now. I plan to stay under 100 g carbs and not sure how many calories that will involve. Will have to see. I'm hoping to keep my calories around 1500 or less. I was doing Atkins when I got everything under control last summer but got bored with it and knew I couldn't do that during the holidays so I switched to WW when they came out with the new Pts + plan. It would work great for me except that I end up eating too many carbs on it. It did help me to end 2010 with the weight I wanted to lose for that year. Now I would like to lose at least that much or more this year. My doctor put me on Metformin to keep my liver from making so much insulin at night. He told me that any diet will work. The key is finding one you can live with so I can use what ever diet works for me that I can live with. And of course exercise helps a lot. I've just gotten to the point of being more active and slowing getting into exercise. I dreaded going to a doctor when all this started as it had been a long time since I had a good one. I have to say that I have a really great doctor who really works with me. He said he can tell who works at it and who does not. I do like the way I feel when low carbing, but get tired of all that fish and chicken. When I told my doctor that I couldn't eat so many carbs, he suggeted that I eat them earlier in the day so I will be trying to get most of my carbs eaten by three in the afternoon since DH likes our main meal to be eaten around 2 pm. This is why I'm so glad to find this group. Maybe I'll get some ideas for other foods to eat. I usually try to keep everything pretty simple and sometimes simple can become boring. Gwen I don't know if nuts have sugar; maybe natural sugar, I never thought of nuts having sugar, but I have to say that I do have a problem with them. I really love certain ones... pecans and cashews are my favorites and I'm sorry to say that I cannot handle a handful which is supposed to be a serving. For me they're like Lays potato chips ad says "You can't eat just one". Once I open a container of these, I want to eat them all. It really takes a lllooottt of will power for me NOT to eat the whole bunch. I easily love to binge on them.:dizzy: |
