Active Folks Over 50 -- #14

Hey everybody! Welcome to the thread!

Active Folks Over 50 is a place to talk about fitness and healthy eating information as it relates to weight loss and/or maintenance--and also about any work, fun, hobby, or volunteer activites you're engaged in. In other words, the active part of your life!

Just a few guidelines for this thread:

- Raves about grandkids or ranting about your kids is out of bounds.

- Lengthy discussion of your illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medical procedures in general is also out of bounds on this thread. So is whining about old age! ;)

- Positive stories of vacations taken, volunteer work, or achievements at work or elsewhere are highly encouraged! As are recommendations for books, movies, discussions of weight related issues, etc.

Here we are past the 4th. It's gotten summer hot here in Fla., which means we stay indoors in the middle of the day, pretty much. Often it rains in the afternoon at this time of year. Oh, now and then I do see some fools out trying to jog in the middle of the day. One year there was this man... middle aged... he was beet red... jogging at noon... must have been heat index 110 out there... and sitting on the light poles above him, watching with interest, were a couple of vultures...

What do you have planned for your summer?

Jay

Timlin 07-07-2008 01:24 PM

Good afternoon! July seems to have slipped away from us......would you please chase it back up north! It's lovely and cool for gardening and exercising so that's the bonus.

I rode my bike this morning pretty early to avoid the worst of the traffic and it was perfect. I rode into the wind going out and so coming back was a little easier.......I haven't ridden much this year yet so I'm still trying to remember the gear shifting for uphill chugging. I love my bike!

The meadows here are full of flowers at the moment and I laid my bike aside and climbed a hill to just take in the scene and enjoy all the blossoms. It's amazing!

I hope everyone finds a lovely place to go and walk or exercise some way today..........summer is so treasured (although I know in Florida and the deep south it's different than up here in the northern States area). Breath it in and enjoy!

Been busy, busy today and just never got the time to chat with anyone on-line. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. see you then . . .

Hey Timlin! Welcome to the thread!

Jay

CountingDown 07-07-2008 05:48 PM

Timlin - :welcome: I would happily give you our weather right now. Very, very sticky. Too hot to get much done. Although, I did plant a couple snowball bushes after cleaning all the dead wood out of the spirea hedge. It had gotten away from me and needed a lot of work.

I will almost be glad to go back to work tomorrow and sit at a desk all day (I said ALMOST).

Hope everyone is having a great day!

the slim me 07-08-2008 08:08 AM

Good Morning

Timlin, Hi, Nice to meet you. Looking forward to talking to you. I just had my husband get my bike out and tune it up this weekend so I could go riding with my grandkids. they decided to stay with their other granma this week so I have all this free time on my hands. I decided to take my bike for a test run yesterday. I have thigh muscles. Now, I exercise all the time (walk and lift weights, and even do squats) but evidently I hit a new set of muscles with the bike. reminded me why it's good to change out the exercises from time to time.

Laurie, You have been very busy lately. Getting your exercise with some actual work. Bet everything is looking nice now. So good to look around afterwards and see the results.

Make it a good day, Freda

meowee 07-08-2008 12:54 PM

:grouphug:

My exercise for today has been a major cleaning of closets. Worked for hours and got really hot under the collar even with the A/C going full blast.

Hope you all have a great day of moving and shaking . . . :carrot:

JayEll 07-08-2008 03:23 PM

Hey everybody!

Well, my weight has stalled again. Oh well. I can't complain since I got through vacation without terrible damage... but I'm not really down to where I was before I left yet. Grrrrrrrr.

Today's my day off from the gym, too, and I'm feeling antsy. Maybe I ought to invest in a step aerobics step and DVD... I did step years ago, during one of my "fitness" phases, and I really liked it.

I hear the thunder coming in right on schedule! Guess I'll unplug.

Jay

CountingDown 07-08-2008 10:27 PM

Quick fly in -
Jay - I love my DVDs. I just got 4 new ball workouts. There are so many good DVDs these days - just great stuff. If you have room for the step - sounds like it would be a good way to work in an extra workout or two into your schedule :D

Linda - I hate cleaning closets - I applaud your efforts in the heat. I have one closet under the stairs that I need to get to - I will do almost ANYTHING to keep from starting it. Gotta get it done - you have inspired me to at least get it on my agenda ;)

Hope everyone had a great day - another crazy one here. But I did get in a walk to the farmer's market and picked up quite a few veggies :D

the slim me 07-09-2008 07:44 AM

Good Morning,

Linda, You cleaned a closet in the heat? WHOOOHOOO! I really need to get a few cleaned out too. My DH is so good about that. He just cleaned his and i have a pile of clothes to take to the hospital with me. Patients come in and have no clothes and we bring in things. I wish I could get inspired....

Laurie, You're getting things at the farmers market? I don't think ours are open for fresh vegetables yet. And my tomatoes aren't in at home yet either. Tons hanging on the vine, but they aren't ripening. I think they need more hot days, which we havne't been having.

Lots of good exercise video's out there. I usually get them at the library first to see if i'm going to like them, before I buy. If your library doesn't have them they will usually get them for you. I just got Yoga for Dummies. I tried it out yesterday. I know it's supposed to help but I've decided i'm just not a yoga person.

make it a good day Freda

meowee 07-09-2008 07:45 AM

Oh wowee . . . another yicky, hot and sticky day for norther NS . . . I feel totally enervated already. Got up with great intentions of moving on to the kitchen nooks and crannies this morning (still in ruthless clean-out mode) but, but, but . . . done nothing but :coffee2: so far. Hey the day is still young so maybe I'll get into gear soon.

Big :grouphug: for all.

CountingDown 07-09-2008 06:09 PM

Cooler weather here today. It was a busy one. Work was typical, but our Pastor called and needed help with the sound/computer system for a funeral today. It was the parent of one of my classmates. Thus, it was fun to catch up with some folk - in addition to skipping out of work for a couple hours.

Oh, and had the "girls" flattened and photographed today. And she informed me that the last time I had it done was in 2002 :o

I gotta get better at getting all this "preventative maintenance" done!

I'm thinking that I need to mix up my exercise and eating a bit. The scale seem to be stuck this week. Ah, well, patience is a virtue - and at least it isn't going back UP!

Hope you all have a great day!

meowee 07-10-2008 05:51 AM

Hi gang . . .

Apparently only one more really hot and sticky day to get through and then we will be rewarded with a little break in the weather. :crossed: Today is the usual 'mall crawl' day -- what to wear is the main question right now since it will be too hot outside and likely too cold inside. :dizzy:

Etta 07-10-2008 06:51 AM

Hi everyone. Early days here just over a week. I have been cutting down over the last few months but trying to get a bit more serious about losing some weight. Walking is the only exercise I do and until recently I only went out two or three times a week. I try to walk every day even if it‘s just around the block. I keep telling myself I‘ll step it up once I feel a little more comfortable with it.

I look forward to checking in with you and getting to know you all. Take care. I hope everyone is having a good day.

JayEll 07-10-2008 08:03 AM

Hey Etta! :welcome2:

I'm bummed 'cause my weight loss is stalled at the moment. This seems to be the story of my weight life for months now. I'm really tired of it! Oh well...

We bought a "pet door insert" that goes into our sliding glass door onto the screen porch. It's really nice--now it's just a matter of the cat's learning to go in and out the door on his own. Before this, we would just gap the sliding door to his width, and then hang a scarf over the opening, leaving about a foot at the bottom. It was better than nothing, but the heat here is pretty overwhelming... This insert is perfect--so I hope he gets the courage up soon. He's used cat doors before, in his distant past.

Have a good one!

Jay

CountingDown 07-10-2008 04:58 PM

Jay - hang in there with the weight loss. You are probably still seeing some of the effects of the trip. That pesky scale will move again. I know it is hard - I have the same problem after a trip. Stay OP, and keep exercising. You are a wonderful role model for patience and tenacity and grace while dealing with a plateau!

Cat door - he will get the hang of it soon. I used treats to coax our cats through the first few times. It worked pretty well. Our door is huge - since we have a 75 lb golden mix. Thus, it takes some effort for the cats to open it. I love our door - it really is nice that the pets can go in and out as they wish while we are at work :D

Etta - :welcome2: I like to walk too! I try to walk to work whenever I can. It really helps keep me on track if I can get in a good walk each day! I look forward to more of your posts :)

Linda - glad the forecast is improving for you! It got quite hot today (nothing like what Jay gets, than heaven!) My walk home from work was slower than usual. I am waiting until after supper to get the weeding done.

JayEll 07-10-2008 05:52 PM

CountingDown, is that 131 I see???!!

Jay

Etta 07-10-2008 06:09 PM

Jay and CountingDown,

Thanks for welcoming me to this new thread.

I was a bit worried about broadcasting my intentions to work at losing weight at my age but this thread makes me feel at home.

Thanks again for the encouraging words.

CountingDown 07-10-2008 06:32 PM

Etta - I kept it quiet at work too. It was a double-edged sword though. On ONE hand - it was great that people weren't "keeping track" and I didn't have to worry about people noticing how fast or slow I was losing. On the other hand, it was kind of a downer when I lsot 40 lbs. and no one noticed. But, overall - I was glad that I didn't broadcast my efforts. It took some of the pressure off.

Finding 3FC and this forum has really, really helped me on this journey. The folk here are wonderful, and kind, and wise. I have learned so much about weight-loss, and maintenance - particularly as it applies to folk my age. It is harder this time - well - I mean slower, really. In some ways it is easier. My expectations have been more realistic. I don't have a sense of urgency about how long it takes meet my goal.

Keep posting and letting us know how you are doing, what plan you are using, and any questions you may have. The combined wisdom around here is astonishing :)

meowee 07-11-2008 07:17 AM

:welcome: ETTA . . . so glad to have you joining us, and it sounds like you are on the right track.

Speaking of things that are right . . . looks like a good weather day for northern Nova Scotia -- warm and sunny, but much, much lower humidity. :yay:

Thanks for noticing!

For 3 straight days - it has been 130.6. It is taunting me, for sure.

I'm glad it is Friday - it seemed like a long work week. It is hot and humid - the rain is drying up as it crosses Lake Michigan, so the storms we were supposed to get aren't coming. I need to get out into the garden and get some weeding and watering done. It is looking pretty good right now, maybe I will take a couple pics and post them this weekend.

Enjoy your Saturday all! Maybe Spiny will pop in? I miss her!!!

You GO girl! GO!!! :cheer2:

Hey everybody, I've been stuck in the house almost all day, trying to finish up a manuscript on deadline. I did manage to get out to the gym, but not until 4:30. I just couldn't work anymore! My brain and eyes had turned off!

Well, I'm stuck again at my nemesis weight... It's been too long since vacation now, so I don't think that's it. I got down, then I bounced up. I'm sure glad that none of my family members are being held hostage unless I lose weight! ;) ;) ;)

I miss Spiny, too! And what about BillBlueEyes, and hijude, and the others we haven't seen? Helllllloooooo out there!

Well, I hope they're having a good summer!

get fit in ky 07-12-2008 12:17 PM

I've been lurking for months, but don't post regularly, so I kind of know you but you don't know me.

I just hit a milestone of 2 days <150. Haven't been that in decades (and for once, this is a group that understands that!). What motivates me is seeing retiredone and counting down. What losers!

The accountability thread has helped me too as I can post in seconds if I'm short on time.

JayEll: I had a two month plateau followed by a 8 pound spike after a spring break trip to London! It's taken me three months to recover!

Three years ago when DS went to college I gained 5 lbs. at spring break, 5 getting him ready that summer, and 5 while he/we stressed out over his first semester. I vowed not to repeat it this year as DD (and last child) leaves for college! So the first 5 are now gone and no increase has occurred this summer!

I'll keep reading even if I don't post all the time. You guys are great motivation. I give myself "permission" to "waste time" on the computer, but only AFTER I've done my exercise!

JayEll 07-12-2008 03:48 PM

Hey get fit in ky! :D

Thanks for posting! Yeah... plateau can be awful... But what's a loser to do? ;)

Had some work leftover to finish this morning--did the kitchen floor awhile ago--Now just king of wondering what to do next... It's day off from gym. Hmmm... makes me want to go anyway! But I don't think my knees would be happy with me.

Hope you're all doing good this weekend!

Jay

CountingDown 07-12-2008 05:24 PM

Sue :welcome2: Glad you decided to post - and thank you for your kind words!
Congrats on your loss :D You are doing GREAT! You are really close to your goal! The last 10 lbs. has gone very slowly for me, but - it has gone :)

Jay - wow - you are the picture of ambition! Does your gym have a variety of equipment? Maybe some stretching, or ball work, or something that doesn't put stress on your knees. I would hate to waste a good exercise craving (I don't get them very often )

Well - today is the "BIG" day. My weigh-in this afternoon was 130.0. I'm working on putting together my new avatar and goal pics. The latter is painful, and hard. FINDING pictures of me at my high weight was very difficult. I avoided the camera like the plague.

Hope you are all having a great Saturday. I'm off to finish my collage.

gailr42 07-12-2008 08:33 PM

CountingDown, I was on here earlier and saw your regular avatar etc. I noticed you said you had .2 to go, and now you have done it. Huge congratulations to you! I know how you felt when no one noticed that you had lost forty pounds. No one has noticed that I lost 40 lbs, either.

JayEll, I am absolutely cracking up over the cat door. We put the same kind in our sliDING door. Turns out our sliding door is out of square somehow, so it's not perfect, but OK. We pretty much stood on our heads trying to teach one of the cats to use it. Then we figured out that she was using it, just never when we were around - she didn't want us to see her. She still does't like it a whole lot. Especially when the dog is lying across the opening. She tolerates the dog, but doesn't want to walk over her to get out.

My DH is in GA visiting his daughter. I am in charge of the cats, dogs, chickens and watering the yard. It has been really, really hot and smoky here. The neighbors are going away for a week and I will be in charge of their chickens, cats, dogs, and garden too. I hope all this farm work doesn't make my hands rough.

I am trying to learn how to use my MP3 player that I got so I could listen to electronic library books. I have also spent some time trying to program a remote control for the tv. I have no natural talent for this kind of thing and get really, really, frustrated.

Good Morning everybody . . . . . . and a special :welcome: for you, BRIGHTER DAY.

Definitely another "bright" day here in northern Nova Scotia and as soon as my hair dries and I finish saying 'hello; in a few more 3FC places, I am going out to play. :yay:

CountingDown 07-13-2008 02:37 PM

:woohoo: Brighter Day - glad to have you aboard :D

Jay, Linda, Gary, Gail - thank you so much for your hugs and kind words. Being a part of this group has really helped me. You are all so inspirational! When I get down, I look at what all of you are doing - and you help me pick up my sorry self and get back in my groove.

I need to follow Linda's lead today and get outside. It is a bit windy, but still lovely out today. And, the weeds seemed to multiply overnight :yikes: I think they have been sipping the Miracle Gro while I wasn't looking.

Have a blessed Sunday all!

JayEll 07-14-2008 08:08 AM

Hey folks,

Be sure to check out CountingDown's Goal thread! And don't miss the pix! :woohoo:

Rainy here this morning--we've got a stalled front. A real drag, because I'd like to go for a walk. Too unpredictable, though.

Did you all have a good weekend? I did some chores, pushed some papers around, did a little organization. I have unpacked boxes still from the move last year! tsk tsk.

See ya!

Jay

Good Morning all, It's a lovely day here. Yesterday was nice and sunny, warm, but a nice breeze all day. For my exercise, I cleaned the cars, which were badly in need. And I pulled some weeds too. You're right, Laurie, they seem to be doing really well this summer.

Laurie, by the way, WHOOOO HOOOO!!!!! GOAL!!!! You have done so well! What are you doing to celebrate!!!

Brighter day, Looking forward to getting to know you.

make it a good day, Freda

Nice morning, but both the humidity and the temperatures are on the rise again. May get outside again before it gets too hot, though. :crossed:

CountingDown 07-14-2008 07:18 PM

Hi all - a boring day at work, but productive. The weather is glorious (low 70s and sunshine) and I need to get some weeds pulled while it is cool. Rain predicted for the rest of the week.

Freda - I'm not doing anything special except clothes shopping at an embarrassing rate. Seems like all of the sale flyers, and emails and coupons are flooding my mailbox right now. DH just rolls his eyes when yet another "box" arrives on the doorstep :o

Jay - when I cleaned the basement last summer, I found unpacked boxes from when we moved. But, we moved 18 YEARS earlier :o. I must admit that I ended up getting rid of virtually everything in those boxes. Thankfully, we have the room to store them, but not my best move - from a stewardship point of view.

Well, those weeds are calling - have a GREAT Tuesday everyone!

JayEll 07-15-2008 07:10 AM

Hi all,

More rain this morning. I begin to wonder when my next opportunity with the hedge clippers is going to come!

CountingDown, those boxes from 18 years ago! :yikes: The trouble with the boxes I have left is that the contents need to be sorted, and there is nowhere to sort them into... A space problem... And they aren't things that can just be thrown out. However, I have realized that if I clean out my drawers, I do have some storage space there. Just a matter of rearranging (and finding the gumption).

See ya!

Jay

meowee 07-15-2008 08:11 AM

Steamy day . . . with possible thunderstorms . . . oh well, like some of the rest of you, I could do some more cleaning out of stuff. I have junk in my crawl space that hasn't been looked at in 17 years -- and probably will not get looked at anytime soon either.
