40-Somethings June Chat Thread

Happy June! Welcome to the 40-Somethings chatting and accountabilty thread.

Mrs Snark 06-02-2014 10:35 AM

Oh June, why must you be so darn humid!

Ready for a good (even if it will be hot) month!

love2b150 06-02-2014 02:27 PM

catching up from the May thread ...

andrew80k :congrat: on the 10lbs GONE :high: I love the derby cars so cute, brings back memories :) I'm learning what works as time goes on. I have found that in my four years on this journey different things work at different times. So far 5:2 is working for now for sure :)

Zumba, they are less than two years old, but that have certainly been used more than any other sneakers I have ever purchased due to my Nike+ sensor :) Thanks that treadmill is definitely my friend ;) I'd like to do Zumba again. I miss the Zumba instructor that I worked with in VA. They offer classes that at the gym but they are so overly crowded it's discouraging. They need a bigger space for sure because the class is so big.

Cattails, Marlene, Michelle, Shannon

Heidi, where are you  hope all is well

Made it to the gym yesterday did 4.13 miles felt really good. Weigh in this morning 158.6 a new adult low after children :)

tymaboy 06-02-2014 02:57 PM

Hello everyone. Ive been a member for awhile but usually stick with the bikers group. Love those ladies but decided to venture out & support more. When I started I was at 160, now at 126. I am happy with that. I am at the weight I was when I found out I was pregnant with my son 21 yrs ago. It was hard & still have to behave. I dont want to gain it all back plus in the beginning I found out that I am Hypoglycemic so I have to be careful no matter what any more.

Mrs Snark 06-02-2014 03:12 PM

Welcome Tymaboy! Congrats on your hard work!

Rennie!!! You are just busting it OUT! Congrats on that new low! BOOOOO-Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

love2b150 06-02-2014 05:05 PM

Hi tymaboy :welcome: to the thread :) Great job on your weight loss journey :)

Thank you Michelle :)

andrew80k 06-02-2014 07:31 PM

Another good day today. Ate on plan. Finally back in the gym after too many days off and ran 2.5 miles in 25:00. Not my best run, but not my worst. Energy was up and hopefully I did it early enough that I'm not up half the night. I feel pretty good too. Sometimes it's hard to see progress when you have so far to go, but I can tell in the fit of my clothes that I'm headed in the right direction.

Rennie Thanks! Making the cars is half the fun. Congratulations to you as well, you are getting it done and that is great to see.

Michelle It's hilarious that you are a chip-a-holic. I secretly harbor a cookie fetish. Shhhh. Don't tell anyone. My house is full of Girl Scout cookies.

tymaboy Behaving is a way of life, which is why it's no fun. Great job on your progress. Welcome.

Shannon Thanks. Glad to see you are feeling back to normal and getting back on track.

Zumba Pink car, huh? My little one's favorite color is pink. The first car we made was hot pink, so I know she would appreciate it.

love2b150 06-02-2014 07:47 PM

Thanks andrew :), Good job on the run :high: Take your measurements for when the scale doesn't move then you have your measurements to bring the smile back :) Luckily my kids Scout Masters/Den Leaders were the ones that had the shop areas and tools when we were working on them. I don't mind sanding, painting and decorating but the saw scares me. Had a accident with a meat slicer as a teen and the sound makes my skin crawl :D silly at the age of 48 :) Thin mints and the Lemonades cookies are my favorite. I did great this season. I got the kids their boxes and I only ate 3 from each (had to be fair and no I didn't eat them at the same time ;) though I could have). I was proud of myself.

Cattails 06-02-2014 08:19 PM

Rennie, you are rockin'!! :dancer: Grats on the new low and even more on the fbs #s - that is fantastic. :D

Welcome, tymaboy, and grats on getting to a happy weight. :) I too am finally down to below my pre-pregnancy weight (after 22 years) and it is kind of mind boggling. Good work!

andrew80k, cute cars! Uh-oh, GS cookies? You just reminded me I have a small stash in the freezer! LOL

We went to NV to see my folks this weekend and it was a good visit. My mom's health has really declined in the past 5 years due to bird handlers disease, as I've mentioned before, and it is shocking to see her so frail and old-looking - well, she is 73 but she's never looked her age before. But she's still kicking around as well as she can and I'll take every day of having her that I'm given.

Had a good time visiting with my dad and sister and her husband also; my BIL has been a gym rat for decades and gave my DSs and I a lesson in basic lifting, checked our forms and such. I impressed him by curling his Olympic bar (45 lbs.) even if it was just three times!

Happy June to all, and I too miss Heidi - where are you?!!

MarleneV 06-03-2014 02:08 AM

Hi all!

Welcome to andrew & tymaboy. Glad to have you aboard. I've been trying to get on daily, have a lot going on, seems worse than tax season some days.

I'm still bouncing around above what I want to weigh. Was strictly op (ok, guess it is really yesterday now). Today I have a lunch with a client, hope that I can do ok. Already have dinner planned, so should be ok for that.

Job search is on, it is frustrating. I want to move on, and NOW would be good... I have little patience now that I've made the decision. Part of it is that I want to move from one practice area to another, and that may take some time. If I wanted to stay in the same practice area, I would already have something.

Zumbachica 06-03-2014 12:46 PM

hi all!n wow, i can't believe we are already in JUNE....May just flew by in a wink.

Im trying to hang in there with the 5:2 diet. I think i have lost inches, my waist feels smaller but it could be my imagination. No real change in the scale except now i'm hovering around 150 instead of 154.....i won't feel like i am making progress until i'm in the 140s again.....My persona goal is to be 140 by fourth of july.

I am kickboxing and working with trainer....i walk with friends when i can....noone can say i'm not trying....now if i can only shut my pie hole...:)

Mrs Snark 06-03-2014 12:52 PM

I'm painting today and my arthritis is killing me. Holding a paint brush hurts almost immediately. Stinks. Storms continue to hover in the area, maybe the barometric pressure is making it worse.

I just put a whole can of black beans into my almost-daily burrito. I musta been hungry.

love2b150 06-03-2014 01:20 PM

Thanks Cattails :) Blessings to your Mom and your family for life to the fullest, enjoy. Good job on impressing your BIL, You go Girl :high:

Marlene  hoping for better days soon my friend  Is there an opportunity to make a move in the practice area that you're in with another firm and with room to move to a different area or do both? idk, go in and show the new firm all that you're worth and take over :) Wishing you all the best

Zumba those are great victories lots of movement so continue to talk about them, helps give incentive to folks like me :) Yay for hovering around the 150's is great. With all that you are doing I think you'll be in the 140's before July for sure :)

Michelle sorry about the arthritis  maybe the painting should wait awhile  Wow, LOL a whole can of beans, got your fiber in :)

I am up .6 to 159.2. I need to get my eating together. I think my calories are too low ... I need more fiber and exercise for sure.

Zumbachica 06-03-2014 03:01 PM

LOVE2B I am the LAST person that should be giving anyone incentive, but if I am , then so be it...I really hope you are doing better and have things in control....one thing I learned from OA so far is that this is a moment to moment thing....each day we stay OP is a victory...:carrot: And we have to celebrate the tiny victories....like passing up a dessert , etc.

MARLENE..Good luck with your job search.

CATTAILS It sounds like you had a good visit with your family...is bird handlers disease the same thing as pisicosis? I know that you can get that from bird droppings.

Andrew always impressed by runners...never took a liking to it.....wish I did.

Zumbachica 06-03-2014 03:02 PM

SNARK hope that arthritis eases up for you soon......

Cattails 06-04-2014 02:13 AM

Ugh, Michelle, I feel you on the arthritis. The barometric pressure does seem to make a difference, doesn't it? Are you painting for pleasure or for maintenance?

Zumba, yes, bird handlers disease is psittacosis - it's such an irony. My mom has taken care all her life to stay at a healthy weight, never smoked, all that - and then her interest in parrots did her in. Her lungs are in such bad shape, her doctor has brought up lung transplant - the survival rate of that is awful!

And I have to disagree with you - your determination IS inspiring! Even when you don't think so, I can see that you are working hard to keep yourself in a healthy place. :)

Rennie, here's a little something to help you hold onto those 150s: :dust:

Zumbachica 06-04-2014 06:48 AM

OMG Cattails, im so sorry about your mom, thats awful. I used to feed pigeons that hung out under the elevated train in the city when i lived there and thats when someone told me about that disease and told me to keep away from those birds and their droppings. I have another friend whose mother developed some kind of lung disease from believe it or not the compost pile in her yard. Supposedly it had some kind of mold that is extremely toxic when breathed in. The craziest things can make us sick. Anyway I'm sorry to hear this about your mother....:(

Today i am at 149.6. I really hope to stay under 150 for the rest of June. Super busy day today running errands and then kickboxing tonight.

Mrs Snark 06-04-2014 08:11 AM

Marlene - I hope something turns up in the job search soon! When the timing is right it is hard to wait patiently! I suck at patience is all things, really.

Rennie - If you are looking for fiber, may I suggest cans of black beans? I can tell you, they do the job! ;)

Zumbachica - I so agree with you on celebrating every moment and every "small" victory. I've noticed that when I start looking too far ahead at how I should do X and how I should do Y and blah blah blah, I start getting overwhelmed and it all seems impossible. When I just think about what to have for lunch I have a much easier time!

Cattails - I had previously googled bird handler's disease when you mentioned it before. That really is terrible. I'm so sorry your mom has to suffer with this -- a lung transplant is scary stuff.

Regarding my arthritis and painting: I'm painting for both maintenance and for pleasure. In the house I'm doing some door painting and sprucing up.

On the pleasure front, I am getting ready to paint a vintage-look sign as a gift for my husband's birthday. The sign will hang in our sailboat. Our sailboat's name is Knotty Dog. The sign will say "Knotty Dog Lounge" and will feature a Westie wearing a little sailors hat (our Westie is our boat dog) and I'd like the word Lounge to look like it is written in rope. It's all a little experimental and I've never tried to do a vintage-style hand-painted sign before.

Zumbachica 06-04-2014 08:15 AM

SNARK exactly Snark, I kept joining challenges and giving myself a crazy goal to achieve, when in fact I couldn't even get through the afternoon without binging....so now the "goal" isn't as important as the journey. I feel too overwhelmed to think ahead like that anymore...

And I love sailboats..and Knotty Dog is a cool sailboat name! I hope you post a pic of your work....it sounds amazing....

Shannonsnail 06-04-2014 09:38 AM

I'm utterly behind reading so forgive the lack of personal comments. I went back to the gym for the first time since Feb and it went well. I just did a walk around the track for 30 min. In the past I've jumped into heavy cardio too fast and burned out. I'm losing weight but very out of shape. I'm taking it slow this time bc my new changes need to become habits, not fad. There is plenty of time to progress my workout.

I think I'm having a NSV. I'm hesitant to put it in black and white, lol. But I've been noticing the last couple days my right knee is not hurting and cracking when I walk upstairs. I'm not sure if it's a fluke or real. I read that every pound lost is like 4 lbs lost in terms of pressure on knee joints.

This week my hubby has started his "diet" with me. He is 200 lbs overweight...yes. He has gained about 120 of that since we married 7 yrs ago but has been overweight pretty much his entire life. He is cutting carbs, like me. He is not cutting them to the extent I am but he does not have issues with his blood sugar like I do (shocking I know but believe it or not, obesity does not actually = diabetes like most folks think). I eat based on my glucose meter, he does not have to do that. Anyway, so far I've seen him do really well....he isn't drinking his usual 2 liter per day of diet mt dew which is just shocking. I really hope he is able to be successful. We have a wild 4 yr old and I need him around, lol.

love2b150 06-04-2014 10:22 AM

Thanks Zumba, and I am in agreement with you, Cattails and Michelle :) Yay on the 140's, I'm happy for you :)

Cattails  Thank you :)

Michelle I am so paranoid when it comes to beans. I just feel like I'm not active enough and they will make me gain. But I will never if I don't try. I like most beans so that would definitely add the fiber that I need. :)

Shannon, I don't have trouble with my knees like I use to either so yes that is a great NSV way to go :high: I just can't do the elliptical still, my knees will hurt. I'm happy to hear your husband has joined you on your journey. I know you were worried, you have obviously been a great influence to him. Keep up the great work :)

I am down .8 which is only .2 because of the up yesterday to 158.4. Hoping to stay in the 150's :crossed:

andrew80k 06-04-2014 10:28 AM

Doing well on my plan though I don't feel right today. I think something I've eaten has me feeling blegh. I feel like I'm holding 2 extra gallons of water. Must've had something with a lot of sodium though for the life of me I can't figure out what. Scale was up slightly from Monday which validates that. Ugh. Hopefully upping the water today will help flush it out...

cattails So sorry to hear about your mother. That's truly tragic.

Zumba You just keep working it. It's a marathon not a sprint. :)

Michelle Post a pic of the sign when you get it done. I love that stuff. We just bought a new boat a couple of months ago. It's not a sailboat but we do love it.

Rennie Just hang in there. You're doing great.

love2b150 06-04-2014 10:40 AM

Thanks andrew upping the water should help. I hate it when my stomach feels bloated like that, feel better soon  It amazes me how much sodium is in something as small as two tablespoons of salad dressing, canned meats or for that matter anything canned and frozen meals :dizzy: think back you'll find the culprit :)

Mrs Snark 06-04-2014 12:10 PM

Shannon -- That's so exciting that your husband is joining you in changing his eating style! I can only imagine how much better he will feel with that extra weight off!! That's is awesome about the lessening of the knee pain. The weight makes a HUGE difference for me on my back and hips, it's MAJOR and that benefit alone makes it worth all the effort!

Andrew -- What kind of boat did you get? We'd like to get a smallish boston whalerish type runabout boat. Do you mostly boat in the ocean or in a river/lake?

Rennie -- I think of beans as a super healthy clean food, I eat alot of them. Maybe you can sneak a few in here or there without any problems?

love2b150 06-04-2014 12:29 PM

Michelle, I would love for the pay off to be a bathroom visit for sure. You know my issue with beans also is that when we ate beans when I was growing up and even when I fix them now there is always cornbread. I absolutely love cornbread. it's like the two go together especially pinto, kidney and navy/great northern beans. :D I'm gonna have a half cup of black beans shortly :) start out slow :)

Mrs Snark 06-04-2014 12:33 PM

Cornbread.

love2b150 06-04-2014 12:37 PM

Michelle, I am having a cup of black beans now (only a half cup was left so I had to finish them ;)) :) so good :)

Zumbachica 06-04-2014 04:24 PM

LOL Snark...i made the same cornbread face....Love me some cornbread....

Mrs Snark 06-05-2014 08:26 AM

My most recent google search:

"vegan 2-ingredient 5-minute low-cal full-flavor cornbread recipe"

I wish.

Zumbachica 06-05-2014 08:43 AM

It took months but Im FINALLY below 149...not by much but atleast the scale is going in a better direction....There were days I weighed in at 154 last month so I have to say that is definitely progress....Went to kickboxing last night, it was an awesome class....I am going to try and get there two times a week.....I also have trainer tomorrow, have to admit i haven't been keeping up with my weight workouts....I just have too much going on. Zumba to me right now is just a nuisance...it does nothing for me physically, but it is my only source of income right now so I have to keep it up. It is POURING cats and dogs right now, so unless it clears up there will be no walk tonight....I'll have to do some kind of indoor workout....

Hope everyone is having a good morning....

Zumbachica 06-05-2014 08:45 AM

Love2b...yall were talking about black beans last night so i made rice and beans for the kids...I only had some of the beans....thanks for the dinner idea!!! Its okay NOT to have meat once in a while....

Mrs Snark 06-05-2014 09:14 AM

Zumba -- Congrats on the below 149 number, whoo hooooo! It's funny, I eat all the beans I want, but generally stay away from rice (unless it is a tiny portion in a frozen meal).

I used to take a kickboxing class -- LOVED it. If I still had a gym membership that is the class I would do, so much fun and such a good work out!

andrew80k 06-05-2014 10:57 AM

Feeling better today, though still not 100%. The scale tipped at 233.0 which was a relief. If I had been up today again, I would have gone back to strict tracking of calories.

Michelle We have a Bennington Pontoon with a 250 on the back so we can ski/tube with the kids. It's great. We have a slip at the marina here on the lake so lake mostly but we did get it with the salt water capabilities as we are planning some trips to the coast in the future.

Zumba Congrats on the progress. That is great.

Mrs Snark 06-05-2014 01:02 PM

Andrew - Nice! Pontoon boats are extremely popular here, and after having been on several it is obvious why. SO comfortable to spend time on!

Zumbachica 06-05-2014 01:14 PM

SNARK, yes i forgot how great kickboxing is....Hoping it starts to make a difference in my arms soon.....I would love some arm definition, or at the very least lose some of this sagging....I bought a pair of pink boxing gloves so I thought that I was all that last night and a bag of chips.....

bexlynn3 06-05-2014 01:30 PM

Good afternoon! I am new here. How do I get a weight-loss ticker in my signature?

Thank you!

Welcome, bexlynn.

Follow this link and it will answer all your signature questions.

love2b150 06-05-2014 11:36 PM

Michelle, I need to look that up (tomorrow) :) I'd like to give it a shot, I hope it sounds appetizing and it's good :)

Zumba congrats on the 140's :high:, I meant to have more beans today but nope I ate every unhealthy thing there was :(

andrew hope you are 100% soon

Hi bexlynn3 :wel3fc:

I had a totally off plan day which was just plan stupid since I was already up 1.2lbs to 159.6 but it's done now. I walked 4.75 miles on the treadmill with a nice burn so hopefully I won't have a big up tomorrow :)

Cattails 06-06-2014 05:54 AM

On the subject of beans, I usually throw about a half cup or more of chickpeas/kidney beans in my lunch salad - yum! Michelle, what all do you put beans into, besides your ginormous scrumptious burritos! People want to know...

Oh boy, Edge of Tomorrow is playing - I've gotta go see it! :corn: Looks like a fun one.

 to everyone and TGIF!! Rennie, nice save with the extra walking - you're doing great! :)

Mrs Snark 06-06-2014 07:54 AM

Cattails - I'm not much of a cook (I'm not anything of a cook). I mostly eat beans in the burritos, tossed into huge regular salads, in vegetable salads, and mashed up in pita pockets as "lunch meat". And hummus of course. Nothing like a good garlic hummus wrap.

Edge of Tomorrow -- I want to see also (though I won't actually see until it comes on my Netflix DVDs). I'm a sucker for big scifi movies! We just finally saw Oblivion.
