I'm new and a SUGAR ADDICT! Anyone else?

  • Hi my name is joyce and I am addicted to sugar. Does anyone else feel the same way? I started reading Potatos not Prozac and She discribed exactliy how I feel.

I was wondering if there was anyone else out there feeling like they could not control themselves around sugar or the whites(flour, rice etc,)?

Also anyone out there over come it ?

I could use some pointers and motivation.

    Thanks for your help!
  • You can definitely overcome it!

I'd recommend making slower changes at first with things that you can live with and then gradually make more changes over time. So what kinds of things are you eating in a typical day? Can you make some lower/ non-sugary substitions?

At one time I was easily drinking 4 or 5 cans of coke a day. Some days I'd go through an entire 2 litter bottle. Slowly I cut down the number and then made the switch to diet soda. Now, I drink 1 coke zero a day at lunch and that works for me.
  • I am 100% a sugar addict. The only way I have been able to overcome it .. is I went cold turkey.

In 2009, I saved sugary treats for special occasions. I think I had sugar maybe half a dozen times throughout the year. In January I realized that while I had gotten rid of sweets, I had been stuffing my face with bread and other carbs as replacement for my addiction (and also blew up to 332 pounds).

So, I decided, mind over matter. I have had no sugar, rice or white flour since Jan 4. I have had 3 small portions of white potato in that time, and I have a serving or 2 of grains a day (oatmeal for breakfast, and I sometimes will have whole grain sprouted spelt flour bread for lunch or dinner). And that's really it.

Sometimes it's not easy, but I just remind myself that my brain and my will power is stronger than a piece of toast.

What I am saying is that if you set your mind to it, you can just NOT feed the addiction. When you feel like you need sweets, grab a diet soda or have a small serving of fruit to get over tough moments. I am living proof that is IS possible 'cos if I can do it, I know anybody can! Do it girl!
  • I am a sweets chickie!! Forget about moderations, no such thing. Last week binged on 2 whole boxes of pepperfarms cakes in one sitting. I am struggling with my efforts, since am with my family, they are not thin, but do see my trigger sweets and lose control.. Its a tough habit to break..

    Good luck with your efforts!
