  • I know a couple people who have the mirena IUD and love it. The hormones in it have a local rather than systemic effect, so the periods are light to non-existant. It can stay in place for 3 to 5 years.

I'm going to ask my gyn about a new thing called essure when I go next month. They put coils in your fallopian tubes and it scars over forever. Of course I am DONE having kids.
  • I was on Yasmin for a long time, but insurance has recently decided to not cover birth control (still covers Viagra, but that's neither here nor there). I switched a couple months ago to Junel (a generic of Loestrin).

I like it alright, I'm definitely moodier than with the Yasmin. But for 15 bucks as opposed to 60, I can handle being grumpy.
  • lol i was just put on microgestin fe 1/20 which is supposed to be the same as loestrin fe 1/20...so far i like it. i get a lil sick to my stomach but no headaches...now i just hope there is no babies lol
  • I'm on Yasmin too, i love it no problems in the 12 + months i have been on it....
  • i was on Yaz (not to be confused with yazmin) and it had all kinds of icky side effects and i still had a ridiculously out of control period. Been on Loestrin 24 for 7mo or so now and have no complaints
  • Vasectomy!

It's hubby's turn now that we have 2 beautiful girls. His appointment is next month.

After my second daughter was born, I had a regular copper IUD for about a year - hated it. My periods were long and heavy and never seemed to get better so I had it removed.
  • I was on Yasmin for a while and it made me crazy crazy crazy. Like weeping uncontrollably if I got caught at a redlight or I couldn't find my keys. Of course, at the time I didn't think I was having a problem with it. I felt all this was perfectly justified. My mother was with me when I went back to the gyn (I don't remember why, but there was a reason) and the doc asked how I was handling yasmin and I told him fine. My mother actually stood up and told him no and that I had to be switched. He just kinda looked at her funny until I started crying and told her she was being mean to me. He just said "ummm, yeah I think I'm gonna try you on something else". He put me ovacon (i think thats the genaric, I was too busy crying to listen to the rest) and it's worked great. Now I can laugh about it, but there are some people I should probably apologize to.
  • Hello!
I was on Seasonale (I think it's now Seasonique). You only have 4 periods each year. Except...(don't try this at home, kids!) I just took the pill month after month and stopped the break/placebos. I didn't have a period for about 3 years. It seriously rocked! Only side effects...a little break through bleeding the first few months, but that stopped, and feeling like I could eat a house for at least a month or two. I did gain weight when I started. But the pros totally outweighed the cons. I am going to find a new doctor soon and start back up this summer. Hope this helps...
  • I have been on some version of Loestrin since I was 17...either name brand or microgestin. I tried going off of it once for 3 months and it was a disaster. My PCP tried to convince me that since I am also on meds for HBP that an IUD would be a better plan for me, so she made an appt. for me for a consult with an OB/GYN. He thought she was high for suggesting it...namely because I have never had children and that alone increases the risks of complications upon insertion and also when I told him what my periods are like. I'm still on meds for HBP, still on the pill and still losing weight...so I'm not changing anything until DH and I decide it's time to start trying for kids.

Regarding "stacking" your pills (takingh 2-3 months back to back)...it is OK to do IF AND ONLY IF you check with your doctor first. I did it when I realized that I was set to have my period during my wedding and honeymoon, so I stacked for 3 months so fix my schedule. I had a little bit of spotting but no problems. It is not adviseable to stack more than that...and then you get something similar to what Seasonale does...with 4 periods a year. However, if you have a lot of cramping or breakthrough bleeding while you are doing it, they suggest getting back on your correct schedule ASAP.
  • I was on Trinessa (Generic of Ortho Tri Cyclen) and it was a DISASTER. Terrible mood swings, and cried ALL the time. Switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen, gained a lot of weight, had bad acne, and stayed pretty miserable.

Switched to Depo Provera and freaking LOVED it. Every three months, I'd get a new shot and suddenly be happy as a clam!! As the shot wore off, I could tell I'd get a little frumpier, and as soon as I got the injection I was happy happy happy. Gained a bit of weight but was TOTALLY worth it. No acne, no mood swings, no babies! All good!

Currently off BC all together, but probably starting Depo up again in the fall.
  • I was on loestrin 24 .... it was great while i was on it .... i was a little moody and i put on about 30 pounds in the first 2 months but it was still liveable ..... when i came off about a year ago my period stopped coming alltogether for about 5 months .... last month i got my period and its been almost 5 weeks and no signs of stopping are showing i had to go to my GYN to see whats up she says the loestrin seems to have some lingering effects on my hormones .... she perscribed something to stopp the bleeding all in all ive learned my lesson my husband and i stick with condoms no weight gain no emotional distress no monthly expense no side effects ... we think its the best thing .
  • I was on Depo Provera for about 6-7 yrs maybe more and it was fantastic. No periods no moodiness-nada. Did I gain weight- yes but I also lost weight during this time frame- so I think it probably had less to do with the medication and more to do with me. The side effects of the pill have weight gain associated with it as well and I am losing weight fine being on a higher dose pill. The only reason I went off Depo is I was concerned about bone density and I had been on it so long. I have recently had to go to a higher dose pill due to peri-menopausal issues of a period 3x per month. The next time I see my doc I am going to ask about going on seasonale.
  • I was on Seasonique (a period every 3 months) and I found out my health insurance was going to be cancelled... So I got the depo shot. It screwed me up so badly. I had bleeding for 3.5 months, deppression and barely any weight loss. I switched back to Seasonique and I havent been happier... and I am not and have never been pregnant, so I guess its working!
