Default intentional eating?

I just recently, as many of you know, purchased an IPOD and while loading my own music onto the blasted thing. hheehe I noticed these things called Podcasts....well I found one from Sandra Ahten not completely sure I can post links so I wont. However, I wanted to share something I read on her site about intentional eating, that I found so utterly amazing to head the nail on the head for me!

She discusses how we(overeaters) usually multi-task while we consume calories. She suggests that we "intentionally eat" thus while you eat that oatmeal think about the oat, what it looked like in plant form.....the honey you used to sweeten it, where it came from ......instead of woofing down the food while planning out an event or something else you need to do....but to really contemplate each item you are tasting why you enjoy it etc....

I thought that was awesome.....specially because some times I am thinking ok gotta grab this because if I don't eat these calories now, when I'm suppose to I will consume many extra "bad" calorie choices because my body is hungry and they are quick.

Hope this helps someone else & I hope I explained it clearer than mud LOL I'm not the most eloquent typer LOL

I can add a link for you:

A number of podcasts from Sanda Ahten

Although I don't specifically think about the ingredients, I have made a conscious effort to try to avoid mindless eating.

Thanks Anne!

I enjoyed this topic because I guess I do this alot...even now I will grab an apple because I know its a better snack than a Snickers bar...........but I've woofed down that apple and find myself looking for something else to chew on. LOL

Learning day by day I guess!

I was on the phone while eating dinner tonight. A friend had called and I hated to be rude and ask to call her back. I ate while we talked..I didnt enjoy it as much. I didnt feel like I had eaten as much..I have been trying to eat slower. I woofed it down and it still left me wanting to chew(eat) more. I need to try to focus more on what im eating...I dont think I want to picture the meat though...lol

I sometimes have to eat while working through lunch, and after I'm finished it's like I've forgotten that I ate!

I've learned to try and eat my meals away from the TV and Computer as much as possible. Focusing on my meal does help.

This is a great line of discussion! I’ve been working on avoiding unplanned snacking, which happens on the weekends. To help combat this problem, I’m starting to ask myself how much I really want this “food”, is it something I’ll really enjoy or am I eating it to cover an emotion. Lastly, how will I feel after I eat it? So far this has been working well. My one slip up was making chocolate cookies for this weeks lunches. At least I enjoyed the treat and didn’t look around for more to eat afterward.

Good for you Mizm on the cookies!

I feel the same way sometimes.....I'm bored so I pick something up to eat.....or I'm mad so I grab something. I have had to battle this issue but, at least I have had only good choices around me to choose from so at least if I over indulge it is mostly fruit or a healthy snack. This has helped alot!

I have just downloaded a few of her podcasts but haven't listened to them yet. I definitely find intentional eating really important in enjoying the extras when I have them. If I am going to spend my calories on something decadent I want to savor it as much as possible!

This is great - she's discouraging situational eating. At the computer, for ex., I badly want to munch I have to force myself to settle for water.

Thanks for the info and the link as well. I listen to Marina's podcast too while eating or working out.
