Default Acid Reflux

I have acid reflux. It burns my throat and my tummy.Sometimes if I wait to long to eat I almost throw up from all the acid coming up.I take Zantac for it but I forget to take the pills by the time I think about it I'm almost puking.I used to in the past think I was just hungry all the time.I've been trying to ignore my tummy and not eat all the time.I've been eating small meals through out the day.

It's getting worse.I feel the burning start right after I eat sometimes.I'm trying to eat more fresh fruit and veggies.I think the natural acid in the food that I have been eating is causing the symptoms to get worse.

What are some good low acid fresh fruit and veggies I can eat??

If this is really getting bad for you then you should go and see a doctor about it. Having long term acid reflux can cause serious damage to your stomach and esophagus. My ex has it really bad but his is caused by his esophageal valve not closing properly. It doesn't matter what he eats - it could be bread or curry and sometimes he will have a hard time and sometimes not. Not eating too late helps him a lot.

I'm not sure what's low acid but be careful about tomatos... and actually dry carby items do it to me... cereal and such.

While it might go away as you lose weight I agree should be something you talk to the doctor about. Mine only appears at my heaviest weights something about how excess weight flexes your esophagus so it's too straight. It might be as easy as taming some tums, but definatly talk to te doctor.

I agree with the others who recommend going to the doctor. I have reflux and my doc told me that generally by the time we feel the reflux in the form of pain, burning, regurgitation, etc, our esophagus has actually already been being damaged. The doc may put you on Nexium which is a godsend of a drug. It works so incredibly well! Almost too well, in fact. I found I could eat absolutely anything and in whatever quantity I wanted and my tummy was never upset. I decided to quit taking it because for me it was a license to eat completely unhealthfully with no physical consequence. Now I am taking Prilosec over the counter instead. It works well but you have to be sure to take it pretty consistly. I find if I miss my dosage even by an hour or too I can feel the burning starting again regardless of what foods I have eaten or not eaten.

Anyway, please make an appt with your doc.

I have been surprised by what causes me acid reflux. The worst killer for me is raisin bran with milk. As a matter of fact, anything with milk causes it, even just milk by itself. Rather than eat spaghetti, or any kind of tomato sauce, I might as well just swallow a lit road flair. Peanut butter is bad. So is a lot of varieties of fruit. Veggies have never caused me any trouble, nor meat. Sweet carbs, or salty ones, are sure trouble. Reflux has improved with weight loss, not gone yet, but I have hopes.

I wanted to 2nd milk products as well! Try eliminating milk products for a week to see if it improves or not. Then slowly introduce them back to see what the reaction is. My reflux improved with lactose-free and soy milk products. Mine is especially bad with ice cream and heavy cheese!

I also 2nd going to the doctor. I also found out that my esophagal valve does not close properly but with the correct meds I suffer a LOT less!

Losing weight will help dramatically with your acid reflux so that's just one more incentive for you to keep up the good work. Also, eating smaller portions more frequently will/should help dramatically as it puts less pressure on your LES, helping it not to open when it shouldn't.

Here's a list of some foods that can be bad:

Vegetables (due to high acid or belching)
  • Broccoli
  • Green Peppers
  • Cabbage
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Cauliflower
  • Tomato
  • Tomato Juice
  • Corn
  • Cucumber
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Turnips
  • Rhubarb
  • Kale
Fruits (due to high acid or lots of fiber and seeds)
  • Apple (especially peels)
  • Bananas (can cause constipation)
  • Citrus fruits
  • Figs
  • Coconut
Beverages
  • Milk (lactose intolerance can provoke reflux in some people)
  • Coffee (even decaffeinated)
  • Tea
  • Carbonated Beverages
  • Caffeinated Beverages
Starches
  • Beans (gas producing)
  • Oats (rolled oats OK)
  • Tofu (avoid large quantities)
  • Barley ( OK if perled barley is cooked 10-15 min)
Miscellaneous
  • Fatty or Fried Foods (fats take longer to digest)
  • Meat with connective tissue/gristle (take longer to digest)
  • Chili Powder
  • Vinegars
  • Chocolate
  • Molasses
  • Peppermint/Spearmint (Wintergreen is unrelated)
  • Honey
  • Caffeine
  • Foods with "air" such as fluffy baked goods, Meringues.
  • Swallowing air by sucking on hard candies or drinking from straws
  • Rye Seeds
  • Meat Extracts
  • Black Pepper (White pepper is OK)
  • Creamy Foods/Gravies (High fat content)
  • Gooey Pastries (High fat content)
  • Simple Sugar Foods
  • Excessive Fiber (increase very gradually as tolerated)
  • Pectin
  • High Energy Foods (digest slowly)
  • MCT Oil (medium chain triglycerides, digest slowly)
  • Guargum (thickener, digests slowly)

My doctor has had me on Prevacid for about 10 years now for GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) which I take at bedtime. Most of my reflux is at night. He suggested sleeping with the head of the bed elevated on blocks. (Tried that but we didn't like slipping off the bottom of the bed every night.) Also the carbonated drinks really aggravate mine and eating late at night. Otherwise I can eat most anything but not in large amounts. I have had a gastroscopy several years ago to check the esophagus for damage. I agree that losing a significant amount of weight will really help. I will probably always need to stay on medication for this.

I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux after I started to lose my voice. I had complete laryngitis, no voice whatsoever, and since I'm a teacher, this was alarming. The Ear Nose and Throat specialist suggeted it was reflux, and the acid was damaging my larynx. He got me on Aciphex and Zantac, which helped but did not entirely take away my voice issues. Now, however, when I forget a dose of the meds I feel pain. I never felt acid reflux type pain, just lost my voice. Now it's a huge struggle to find a CURE because unless the reflux stops, I will eventually lose my voice for good. (which means I lose my job). I've stopped eating anything tomato-based and avoid many other foods so as to keep it minimal.

Kitty - Sitting for long periods of time, like in a car, can bring on acid reflux. I'm not sure what you can do about that except up whatever you are taking for it while driving.
I had terrible acid reflux. I believe mine was brought on by excessive amounts of diet soda on an empty stomach while extreme dieting. It took a couple of years to get over this. I had surgery (gallbladder out) and still had it. None of the medications really helped. After a few years of conventional medicine, I was miserable and desperate. I went to a chinese doctor who used acupuncture and herbs. I'm fine now.
Except for the 100 lbs gained since then...

Hi Ladies (haven't posted here before, but this post caught my eye)

I used to have reflux something terrible. Prylosec (sic?) helped some, but not for long. Nearly every night I had it...ate tums by the boatload.

I started South Beach about 4 months ago and have not been sick once since then...till last night.

My son had some friends over. They haven't been here for a while since they all went off to college. When they were in high school, I used to bake for them every afternoon since they practically lived here, so I asked them if they wanted me to make them some cookies. They were too cute..like little kids again when I asked them their eyes lit up. I made the cookies and they smelled so good I decided to eat one. I had not had any cookies, cakes, pie etc in the last four months...nothing with white flour or sugar.

About a 1/2 an hour after I ate that ONE cookie, I was sick as a dog. I think it had to be that white flour that was in it. So white flour may also be something you may want to bring up with your doctor. That cookie tasted good, but not good enough to get that sick for! I eat onions, garlic, acidy fruit and vegetables etc..things you would assume would cause reflux and non of that makes me sick at all...but one lousy cookie nearly put me under.

I had it really bad about 7 years ago. I don't know what started it, but I would be sick 4 or 5 times a week...everything seemed to trigger it, always sick, slept on the sofa so that my upper body was elevated. Then I got pregnant with my youngest child. The acid reflux disappeared completely during the pregnancy, and now I only have it once in a while...like every couple of months. I find that it is aggrivated by pizza, and eating too late at night. Now, I don't recommend this cure for everyone!!!
