One Month

  • Today makes one month since I started trying to lose weight. I'm on a break from the scale for a few weeks, so I don't have an exact amount for WL, but I think it's around 10lbs. I'm a slow loser, so I didn't benefit from the rapid loss many people get early in their dieting. However, I don't worry about that too much right now. 10lbs doesn't seem like a lot, not when I have so far to go, but how wonderful would it be if I could lose 10lbs a month. That's an unlikely scenario, but it helps me put my loss in perspective.

It's more important to me to feel better, and I do. I've managed to make it to the gym every day for 13 in a row. My goal is 30. My husband is frustrated because I insist that it has to be the gym - not just working out around the house. Maybe next month, but this month I needed to be rigid. I know how well I don't work out around the house. I've very good at not working out around the house. Been doing it for years - just not loving the results.

I'm also glad I found 3FC. It's a very supportive place and it makes a difference to see so many people who have done what I want to do.
  • Grats on 10lbs I'd be happy with 2lbs atm. Thats really great and I like how your foucsing on getting to the gym everyday. I couldn't do it.
  • Congrats! Keep on track, and you should keep seeing great results...whether it is 10 lbs or 5, a loss is a loss!
  • Wait a minute Stacey. What do you mean a *slow* loser? 10 lbs in a month is 2.5 lbs per week!! That would be 120 lbs in a year. That is definitely NOT slow. You are doing GREAT!! Take the credit for doing so well!! Keep on doing what you are doing because its working!!
  • Peggy, that's true. And I really am happy with my results so far. Part of my thoughts probably comes from the last time I did WW. Everyone in our group lost 5-9lbs the first week, 3-7 the second and so on. I lost 2 the first and then 1 the second and eventually settled in to a .5 -1lb weight loss a week for the rest of the time I was there. Bye the end of my time with WW I started binging because I was just hungry at the end of the day. Now looking back I can see that WW does work, but my leader didn't explain the plan all that well and encouraged us to do all sorts of bad things. (eat below your points, if you want junk food go ahead and have it - just don't eat for the rest of the day)

Now I'm doing something different & while I still didn't have any dramatic results the first couple of weeks I'm less bothered by it. If I could wire my body to keep losing 2.5lbs a week I would, but even if it drops back where I'm losing .5lbs a week that will be ok. The changes I'm making this time have an impact on much more than my weight, and no matter what weight I am I'll be healthier.
  • Very true Stacey! You *will* be healthier. Usually the dramatic loss is from water weight and not fat. I would rather have 2.5 lbs of fat gone than 8 lbs of water...know what I mean? Either way...congrats on the loss and keep at it!
  • on attending the gym for 13 days!! That is a truly a progress. Keep up the good work and happy working out!! You will make it 30 days to the gym.. You go girl!!
  • Congratulations! 10 pounds a month isn't slow at all - it is a great pace to lose weight.

Also if you don't think 10 pounds is a lot, go find something that weighs 10 pounds and carry it around for awhile. It can seem like a small amount when we have so much to lose, but even a 10 pound loss can really make a difference in how you feel.
  • Congrats on your loss, and on your stick-to-itiveness! I joined a gym with a friend, and we agreed we'd probably work out 3x a week before work. We go every day instead. It's just easier for me to stick to it when I incorporate it into my routine. I've decided to use my gym attendance as an opportunity for me to build discipline. I have to make my goal based on activity (good gym attendance), not on pounds lost.

I also agree with other posters - ten pounds is nothing to scoff at! I'd rather be ten pounds down than no pounds down, for sure!
  • Well done, Stacey!
  • I think I lost 12 pounds my first month, so I think 10 pounds is GREAT!! And the daily exercise is a great NSV!!! I can see you wanting to push, but if you do start to get overtired, it's recommended to give yourself an exercise break once a week or so. Pay attention to your body!
  • Well, I ended up with a break by accident today. I didn't know the community center closed at 5pm, so when I showed up at 6 it was too late. I'm still going to walk this evening to keep on track. (I'm counting it because I showed up - couldn't exercise, but I showed up.)

I would have done less exercise today, only 15 min or so because I'm just not up for much more. Right now the goal is to do some every day, even if it's not a full workout. The discipline of going to the gym is good for me. I'm an "artiste" and not always good with discipline. :-)
  • Congrats on your one month Stacey. That's more than long enough to know for sure you're on your way, and more than long enough to create and solidify some great new habits.

I got a workout kiboshed in the same way! I showed up to the gym last Friday for a full workout and swim, only to find out they were closing in 35 minutes and not 2 hours and 35 minutes. I went up anyway, and did 30 minutes of cardio split evenly between bike and treadmill, so it wasn't a total washout. Hope you were able to salvage something too.
