Old Hens 40+ And Ready to Lose #117

This thread is a sub-set of the 300+ thread.

This group is for those dealing with the challenges of having a significant amount of weight to lose and being fit which becomes harder after age 40. If you're an old or new friend and not over 40 and feel this is the place to post, jump right in.

We start new threads on a Monday.

Terri in MO 04-16-2007 10:41 AM

Hi ladies,

I'm back home and playing hookie from work. I figure after last week, I deserve a happy day at home.

Had a great weekend with my sister. Its been so long since I've gone down to her house. We put her DH on the plane Saturday noon to go to Florida for a few days with his son and the family down there. We went to the Hair Academy and had pedicures. She had never had a pedicure. I wanted one because I'm going to the foot doctor tomorrow. We worked on getting family and favorite recipes into MasterCook so we can make a cookbook. We worked on cleaning her closet. I told her that I was going to name her for Clean Sweep. I made her get rid of a bunch of shoes and old clothes. That was fun. We also watched The Holiday. A good chick flick. Jude Law was scrumptious!

What kind of weather did everyone have over the weekend? When I left home on Friday night it was raining hard. It turned into snow and DH said we had six inches of snow by morning. I drove in rain all the way and missed it all. But then by Sunday it was sunny and no sign of snow by the time I got home. I don't think our onions and potatoes survived it so I'll be replanting. I hope that was the last hurrah for winter. Its back to the 60's and 70's today.

So today begins my long climb back on the wagon. Feels that way anyway. I can't believe that I've done nothing but sabotage myself for about two weeks. I was feeling my arm last night and I can feel it getting soft again. I'm really disappointed in myself because I had worked so hard in December through the first of February on exercise and then fell apart. And really fell on my face as soon as the time changed. My foot didn't help either.

I will be cleaning house today. I will also get back on the stationary bike today as well. I have to go back to about month two with the push.tv workouts but will get started on that too. We're also digging post holes so we can set the hitching rails that DH's cousin built for us. I'll be so excited to be able to get a horse out of the pasture and have a good place to tie them up.

Lilion - I'll bet you'll be glad to get that bathroom done. We're having a horrible time getting people to call back to come out to take a look and if we get that, they don't call back with a bid. I guess they are so busy they don't need our money. Very disappointing. We've had it arranged with a local guy to come out and put the dirt around the foundation so that I can start landscaping. We've had that arranged for a month and still have no idea when he'll be out.

Bearcub - That's either a moderator help question or go to the help board and get Jennifer or Suzanne's help. I know that others have had that at times.

Ruth - Good to see you even if you don't have anything to say! When is/was the birthday party?

Dyan - I don' think I've welcomed you to the group. The water weight loss is one advantage of the BP meds! I resisted them for a long time but now have no problem at all since it makes me get rid of swollen hands. Great NSV for getting into those pants.

Rosebud - Dang that turkey must have been big and hurt like a son of a gun. Sorry to see that you had hurt your hand and that you're having difficult days. Yes, we can all relate to the stress and hard days. Wish I could say that I have them all figured out and won't let it happen to me again. You really did have a rough week there. Hope this one is much better!

Karen - How is your friend doing? I would have felt horrible too. Have you seen the pics yet?

Rita - Welcome to the group! Where'd you go? Losing 8 pounds is geat.

Valerie - As always, miss you and love to see your posts again. We've got it arranged for Spanky to go for training the first of May. The trainer will put 30 days on him and take him on trail rides. Ginger is going away too at the same time so that we can get Spice (aka farthead who thinks its okay to run through the fence to the grass) weaned. How are your guys doing?

Okay, I need to get up and get something done. DH is off to see his mother who is in a rehab hospital recovering from pneumonia. I'm supposed to be cleaning while he's gone. We're having the old neighbors down tomorrow night and its the first time they've been here. I refuse for them to see the house anything but sparkling. Better move my butt.

Morning

Terri - Thank you for the welcome! Sounds like you had a busy weekend!

I spent all day yesterday sleeping. I hate when I do that, but Saturday night was girls night out! There were 5 of us (we all have kids and are either married or in a relationship) and you would have thought we young single chicks! Um, yeah...we got mooned! We had a blast! I love when people think I'm in my late 20's or early 30's. I just love those beer goggles!! ;) LOL. DH sent me a text message at 3:30 am to find out where I was. I was at Jack in the Box, of all places  . I can't help but go to Jack in the box at the end of a night of drinking. I'm not too upset about it, as I got on the scale this morning and am down another pound. I can't remember the last time we had a girls night out, but I do know it won't be happening again, anytime soon. I'm pretty sure that we will have a chaporone, because a couple of ladies got alittle out of control.

DH was a peach yesterday. He took out son to a birthday party, went and got lunch for everybody, cleaned the kitchen, and pretty much took over, so that I could catch up on my sleep. Today's a new day, and I'm almost feeling "normal" again. Still alittle sleepy, but other than that. I'm doing good.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day, and I will talk to you all soon.

thinthinker 04-16-2007 01:31 PM

Hi everybody!

I just ran in to get the WW Strawberry Pie recipe.

I'm not returning but just thought I'd stop by and post so I don't get deleted. :D

Hope you are all doing well.

Lilion 04-16-2007 05:11 PM

Good Afternoon Ladies!

I meant to come here earlier today but a on-line friend over on the WW website works at Virginia Tech and so I've been over there or on CNN all day checking on the shooting. Horrible.

Terri! You got 6" of snow??? How the heck did that happen? We got snow, but literally just while I was sleeping, DH said it snowed, but so little that by morning it was gone when I got out of bed! KC isn't that much north of us. Weird MO weather. It's nice here today too! Glad you had a good weekend. That wagon looks awfully high when you go to climb back on it, doesn't it? ;) I can't believe you are having that kind of trouble with contractors...we've never asked anyone for a bid that didn't give it to us - usually in writing! Glad I don't have to deal with people who think they are too good for small jobs around here.

Dyan, this must have been fast food weekend. DH and I ended up at Dairy Queen at 10:30 p.m. ordering burgers and onion rings - but we hadn't been drinking, we had closed down Lowes! I'd rather have been drinking... Then we split a pint of Ben& Jerry's. We took a blizzard home to our DS and then decided we needed one too, but by the time we got back to DQ it was closed - so the search was on for ice cream! We had Caramel Sutra - good stuff! I still feel fat just thinking about it.

Got to run... to you all!!!!

rileydog14 04-16-2007 09:24 PM

Hi Everyone - I have wallowing in the sea of pity - attempting to climb out again. This just gets harder - but I know some success will encourage me to keep trying. I don't want to be a downer, I just don't know how to succeed.

thanks for everyone honestly sharing their struggles. It does help.

Patti

Have a great week ...

Hi Ladies ~

What a beautiful weekend we had, so we just had to go out for awhile and enjoy it. Today it's sunshine all the way; and about half the snow that fell last week has melted already. Just catching up on some light housework and doing a bit of laundry today. DH has been helping out around here a lot; and he did the dishes for me all week.

Had heard that the northern states were expecting more snow too; but it usually doesn't stay too long. There's not really much we can do around here until all the snow is gone, so it will be a slow week for us; back to spring cleaning I guess; I'll just sort and toss for now.

TERRI ~ yah, it was a large frozen turkey; and it's still in the freezer. I have very small hands (like kids hands, so I'm told). DH and friends that have seen it, can't believe how much damage it did. But it is getting better; some the black is starting to fade, and the throbbing is gone now. This morning, the swelling has come down considerably and I can now bend it a bit; I'm so glad, cuz it looks like it's really on the mend now! Glad you had such a nice time with your sis; you even sound refreshed!

LILION ~ your point about a show reminded me of CKRP in Cinncinnati (was that the name?); a show about a radio station where news reporter, Wes Nessman, thru turkeys out of a helicopter for a live news stunt. That show was soooo funny; loved it!

DYAN ~ sounds like you had one wild weekend; glad you all got home safe and well; and that your DH was such a doll about it all!

HI PATTI ~ hang in there, girl; things will get better; just keep trying, something's bound to help. Glad to see you posting again.

There seems to be another flu bug going around; and I just had to catch it; I'm starting to take some vitamin C ~ hope it helps. Felt blah when I got up; but, now it's getting a little better. Everywhere we go, people are sick, whether it's church, the grocery store, or Tim Horton's coffee shop! :yikes: I feel like wearing a mask ~ LOL!!!

Well, I hope all of you are in good health, and staying OP as best you can. Take care; and keep on, keepin'on ~ your fellow encourager ... Rosebud.

Lilion 04-17-2007 09:05 AM

Good Morning Ladies!

Patti - Hang in there dear! You have HAD success! You've lost 48 lbs! Think of that! You could have not lost anything. You could have GAINED 48 lbs. I know how frustrating it gets - believe me - but if you keep plugging away it WILL happen.

Rosebud - WKRP in Cincinnati! "The turkeys are hitting the ground like bags of wet cement!" I loved that show! I hope you feel better soon!!!

Must run ladies!!! Have a happy, healthy OP day!

Dyanm1 04-17-2007 04:47 PM

Hey Ladies!

Another day....Sun's shining, but it's windy as all heck. My 8 year old came downstairs this morning in a skirt and flip-flops! I had to put the big Kabosh on that! Made her put on some jeans and tennis shoes. She was none to happy about it. But I'm sure she's thanking me right about now.

Lillion: I have no control over the whole Jack in the Box thing (when I was younger my mom told me that I should buy stock!), which is part of the reason I don't go out like I used too (not to mention the extra calories). That's funny that you guys went back! I used to work at Dairy Queen, back when I was still in High School!

Patti: You can do it. You're back on here, which says alot. I just recently returned myself. After a 3 year hiatus and 2 years before that. If we don't keep trying, we're not going to be happy.

Just want 2b: I must say, sounds like our DHs are cut from the same cloth. Thank goodness for designated drivers! She was such a sport to drive all us drunkards all around town!

rileydog14 04-17-2007 06:33 PM

thanks everyone - I have just decided my hunger is out of control - just kidding!

thanks for your support!!!!!!

Terri in MO 04-17-2007 10:10 PM

Evening gals!

The old neighbors just left. We had a great evening with them. We call them "kids" but heck, they aren't that much younger than me. Just loads more energy! They have two boys who are so polite and well behaved. They had fun riding the four-wheeler.

The dad is a painter and they came down so he could do a bid on painting the house. He and I walked through and picked colors. I'm going with 'Colors From Nature' that I had picked up at Lowe's. Right now, the whole house is the same yellowy tan color. Others like it, I hate it. So I'm going with a dark, woodsy green in the master bath. A belgian waffle color in the master bedroom. A slightly darker waffley color in the dining room and then two shades lighter in both the front and back living room. I have to have the terra tan color somewhere so I think I will have that done in the mud room. I had wanted it for the kitchen but he talked me into keeping the red/rust color that will blend very well with the other colors. The main bath will be a crocodile green. Kind of like a fern. He gave us such a low bid that I didn't hesitate. He is very good too. He'll come down in May with his crew when its going to be a rainy couple of days and knock it out.

I was so thrilled with the house. I had shampooed all the carpets except for the spare bedrooms. Mopped floors. Dusted. Cleaned the leather furniture. Washed dog beds. Put up crap that had been sitting around. That was a good workout.

Oh and I had the greatest time doing that yesterday too. DH was gone for most of it or was outside. We have a built in stereo system that plays in the kitchen, bedroom and front living room. I haven't really used it before but turned it on and bopped around the house to the music. Geez, I haven't done that for so long. I hardly ever get the house to myself. The dogs thought I was nuts but that is okay. It was all good exercise.

On the foot front, I'm wearing athletic shoes with arch supports now. I was supposed to see the foot doc today but couldn't get away from work. My foot is still a little sore but it is better than a few weeks ago. I am going to see how it is by the end of the week. If its still a little better than I am going to stick with wearing athletic walking shoes to work (which is a little weird feeling) and just let time heal it. If not, I'll reschedule. But it felt good this weekend to be able to work around the place without the boot and without extreme pain. :crossed:

The tragedy at Virginia Tech is so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to all the families.

Dyan - That was funny to read about your daughter. Fashion rules out over common sense until mom intervenes.

Rosebud & Lilion - I still use that line about turkeys out of the airplane. That was so funny.

Rosebud - Glad to see that your hand is feeling a little better and that DH is helping. Milk that for all its worth.

Lilion - The funny thing about the snow is that it wasn't north that got it! We're forty miles south of the city. Hope your friend that works at V.T. is doing okay. I can't even imagine how devasting that would be.

Patti - Sounds like you need a  Somedays it does feel like I'll never be able to succeed. We're right here to help you. Just focus on one day; one meal at a time. You've worked so hard to get down under 300. Keep that in mind and don't let sabotage take you back over that point. You can do this!

I'm going to watch Primetime about the shootings and then go to bed.

Goodnight!

 to all!

Terri in MO 04-18-2007 08:49 PM

Hello?

We're about to fall off the page.

Today was just a beautiful day. Tonight it was so calm and peaceful at home. I truly felt blessed to have this place in the country. I planted a lilac plant (tiny one), blackberries and mint. The mint I just put in a pot to keep it alive until I can get my herb garden started at the front walk. But it was such good mental therapy.

Time to watch American Idol and hopefully DH will have dinner ready soon.

Have a good night!

rileydog14 04-18-2007 10:44 PM

Hi - just wanted to check in real quick to say I'm still hanging in there - Buddy and I have ben getting out in the evenings and walking a little. I'm expecting the weather to improve - we're might get snow tonight. I'm so wanting the thermometer to go above 40 degrees. It's stuck there, or I need a new one.

My ultimate wish - to get out and soak up some warm temps on Saturday. My DH has to work - and I also NEVER get to be home alone. I am planning to get the house work done early and have some free time to enjoy warm weather. Anyone have an emergency line to mother nature?

ha ha

Lilion 04-19-2007 11:18 AM

Good Morning Ladies!

Goodness we are a bunch of slow old ladies lately! Ruth? Karen? Valerie? Barbara? Where is everybody???

I'm as bad as everyone else I suppose. I've just been finding it so hard to post lately! Not that I'm back-sliding or anything, at least not any worse than usual, posting motivation seems to have left me for a bit. I keep trying to do better.

DH and I came to the conclusion the other day that we have to pull our heads out of our :kickbutt: and start DOING things! We've both been just so ... scatterbrained? lazy? apathetic? useless? :?: Not sure what the right word is. We're just behind on everything, from home improvement and just general house-cleaning to work, school, and organization obligations. No wonder I haven't been thinking about my diet or exercising much lately...it's just a symptom of the rest of my life. His too! He's gained weight again and is behind on his school work and SCA officer duties. We just really haven't figured out what's wrong with us, but we've definately decided we have to try to do something about it!

Yesterday I buckled down and got my duties as merchant coordinator for our Renfaire taken care of and tried to get some housework done...not much though. We've got to get back to working on the bathroom now that the drywall is done. We bought the tile and paint, but I need to try to smooth the walls more before we paint. It is hard to get that done, working only a couple of hours a night, but it HAS to be done. I'm SO ready to use my own bathroom again!

The weather here is WONDERFUL! :sunny: It's in the 60's again and just lovely! It's even supposed to hit the high 70's on Saturday. I've decided to do yard work while my husband is sleeping Saturday. We'll see if power tools in the driveway wake him up, because I'm building planters if it kills me! Just one of the many things I need to get done. Of course then I'll have my excuse to go buy soil and compost and flowers and such! I'm just really wanting to get some gardening done!

Terri, sounds like the gardening bug has struck you too! A caution about mint if you aren't aware of it...it's VERY invasive! It can take over your whole yard if you aren't very careful to keep it contained and it spreads under ground. I've always heard the best way to grow it is in pots or at least sink a barrier several inches (6+) in the ground around it so it can't spread too much. I'm doing my own painting, more time than money. We got the paint for the master bed and bath at Lowes. It was called "sauteed mushroom" and it looked really pretty on the card, but I'm a little worried about it from the little spot they put on top of the can. I think it may turn out to be a poopy greenish brown. No way to tell until it's on the wall I guess, and I can always paint over it again.

I finally did a WI - it's been weeks - and was happy to see that I'd not gained! :broc: LOVE the dancing broccoli! :D

I have to run. New hearing starting soon. Have a happy, healthy OP day everyone and post soon!

rileydog14 04-19-2007 07:19 PM

Are we falling off the page yet?

The weather was promising today - no snow last night, and a brilliant blue sunny sky today. So incredibly beautiful - and we're expecting warmer weather by the weekend.

Yipee!

Terri in MO 04-19-2007 10:00 PM

Hi gals,

I just have to share photos of the dogs.

http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...47&uid=1162304

We are adding to the family next week. We finally got word that we get a little coonhound puppy. Duke. We have truly lost our minds but we love having the dogs so much. Bear has inspired us to not mourne his eventual death but to celebrate his life and to give good homes to other dogs that will love us as well.

Justwant2Bhealthy 04-19-2007 11:48 PM

HI LADIES ~

Just wanted to touch base ~ I'm trying to rest as much as I can this week to get over this flu bug; spent four hours in bed this afternoon bundled up in a big, soft comforter and it really helped a lot.

Have a busy day tomorrow (shopping and such); hope I feel up to it. Had beautiful sunshine today and for the last few days; so, our snow is almost gone ~ again! I think spring has arrived for real this time, as Mrs. Robin showed up here yesterday ~ and that's usually a sign for sure!

Hope the fact that we're so slow posting means that we are all busy and well. I think that it's the anticipation of spring and the improved weather that is causing it. I also have an older pc and when it acts up; I close it down and try again another day (like yesterday).

TERRI ~ my sis said the exact same thing; milk it, honey!
LILION ~ yah, remembered later and his name was Les Nessman; this was a fave show of many; wish they made them like that now.
PATTI ~ glad you are helping hold us up; the good weather will give us all a spring in our step (sorry for the pun; just had to say it ~ LOL).
DYAN ~ good idea; designated drivers are popular here too as are taxis.
HI RUTH, HEATHER, KAREN, VAL, JUDY, BEARCUB, AND ALL THE REST OF OUR GROUP !

I hope all you ladies have a great week ~ take care; and keep on, keepin' on ~ your fellow encourager ... ROSEBUD.

luja 04-20-2007 12:01 AM

Hi

Just thought I'd jump in on this page. I'm over 40, but "old hen?" :D I've got more than 100 to lose. I used to be thin then had kids and worked and took care of every one but me, which I am sure applies to most women who get to this weight. Time flew by and all of a sudden I was over 40, pushing 300 and wondering what on earth happened? I just turned 43 and my goal is be to at a healthy weight by the time I am 45. Ok, my goal is really to be a hottie by the time I am 45!!

Lilion 04-20-2007 09:56 AM

Good Morning Ladies!

Goodness! Lilion posting two mornings in a row! What is the world coming too! ;)

Luja :welcome: Don't worry, I don't think I'm "old" yet either! Well, 90% of the time at least, then someone will remind me that I could have grandkids! I was never thin. But I did slowly get bigger over the years until I found myself at 328 when I was 41! At which point  I realized what the heck I'd done to myself! It's been a long journey losing back down to my "usual" and even my "normal" weight where I wear a size 18 instead of a plus (I'm really tall) but I hope that, before I hit 45 in a short year and a half from now, I get to a truely "normal" weight. I'd like for once in my life to not be obese! You'll find lots of support and understanding here and a  or a :cheer2: or a :kickbutt:, whatever you need!

Terri: WHAT A CUTIE PIE! I  that puppy! He's adorable - and he color coordinates with the others. Is Danni a mix? Her face looks narrower to me, but I was always around male rotts, maybe that's the difference. They are all beautiful dogs, and if we had more room, I'd probably have more than my two little monster dogs too!

Rosebud: I'm glad you are feeling better! Don't overdo today!

I don't really have much time so I should run. Much to do and less time to do it in! Have a happy, healthy OP day ladies!

NoLifeWithoutHorses 04-20-2007 09:04 PM

TERRI – said “We also watched The Holiday. A good chick flick. Jude Law was scrumptious! ” I SECOND THAT! The Bridget something Diaries are good chick flicks too. * Wow! Some major housekeeping going on at your place! I thought I was doing good because I woke up early this morning and cleared a corner of the kitchen counter that DH has insisted stay cluttered for the last 10+ years. Makes the whole kitchen look bigger. ** I’m so glad that Bear is hanging in there and you guys are sharing your warm home with other needy pups. I haven’t had a chance to check out the puppy pics, but I sure will soon!

Hi Dyan – Welcome to the neighborhood! Sounds like you know how to party. As for the Jack in the Box thing, with me it’s Pepperidge Farm Goldfish. I may be killing myself, but when I go, I want to be sure they’re financially stable.

How nice to see THIN popping in, however briefly!!!

PATTI, Kiss that adorable Riley for me. What a sweet little thing!! Today I don’t know what the temps got up to, but the sky was pure blue for the first time in MONTHS and one sweatshirt was all I needed to wear. I hope it was the same up there in Mich for you.

ROSEBUD, For years I lived in Buffalo, NY or the surrounding area, so I understand your weather. I hope it was as glorious up there today as it was down here in Ohio. We’ve waited SO long! And I used to love WKRP in Cincinnati… I guess we’re dating ourselves, aren’t we?

LILION – Thanks for missing me. LOVE the dancing broccoli, too! I hadn’t seen it before. I guess that’s what happens when you go AWOL. Are you gearing up for the summer medieval events yet? DH sharpening his sword, DS polishing up any new mail?

LUJA – Welcome!!! :hat:  Here’s to being a hottie by the time you’re 45!! I hope we can help you reach that goal, and I hope we go along with you for that ride! Too late for me – I’m 47… 48 next month, but healthy will be just as good… well, almost as good as hottie from here on in.

As for myself, I’ve started a new diet deal, on a temporary basis to give myself a kick. I’m going liquid for a little while, like the lap band people do. I’m watching my nutrients, and I don’t plan on living this way forever, but I really need to jump start myself and see a little progress again. It's what I'm in the mood for, so I'll let you know how it works out.

More excitingly: I GOT ON MY HORSE TODAY! Sure, I’ve been riding little Cody, but I actually got on Gabriel tonight for the first time. I can’t remember if I told you, but a couple weeks ago we had a disaster when someone else got on him and he spooked, stormed a couple laps of the arena crashing the rails before she bailed off. I’d decided that I couldn’t risk anyone else getting hurt, so from now on I would be the one to finish training him. After all, it isn’t like he were a little guy that oculdn’t carry me – he’s a TRUCK! I’ve been ground driving him and working more with him, and tonight I decided was the night to finally put a leg over him. All went very well, and I should be actually riding him soon. It just about brought tears to my eyes – riding him was the inspiration that got me started on this journey. I haven’t back slid, but I haven’t finished the job, either. Tonight changes things. It brought me ‘home’, and get-back-jack, cuz I’m MOTIVATED now!!!

Now for me, that’s an ultimate NSV.

Hugs and health to you all!!!

rileydog14 04-21-2007 08:50 AM

Terri - Your dogs are so cute, and the new puupy is really adorable
Luja - Hi - Welcome - I think you'll love it here, the people are warm, supportive
Valerie - my Buddy gets as many kisses as possible! He is a true 'velcro' dog, completely attached to me when I am at home. On the days I go to work, he hides in the spare bedroom, hoping I'll forget to put him in his cage for the day. It gets me laughing each morning trying to find his latest 'hiding' spot. I am very happy that you got on your horse today - Yippee! Also, I love your signature - When you choose the action, you choose the consequences. I may put that on my fridge.

Enjoy your weekend! I hope everyone has sunshine and love around them!

Patti

Can anyone -- I know you can...:listen:

Tell me - or give me a link - to what is a 'normal' daily intake of food?

My eating has been out of control lately - I think if I knew that I had already eaten exactly what I should have for the day - I could know that I was on the right track.

When I lost 120 lbs a few years ago - I ate 1200 calories a day - but I couldn't eat that few again. Or it scares me...

I know fitday.com can record what I did eat, but I would like some examples of what a full day of food should look like.

Thanks in advance!:grouphug:

Lost

Okay, I'm lost. I was on thread #116 and suddenly it said you were starting a new thread. I think I've found the group I was in again. I guess I need this thread thing explained to me. :D When do you start a new thread? How often?
I've had an up and down week - :dizzy: i found out a young friend of mine was one of the wounded students at Virginia Tech so that has been on my mind all week and then I dropped off my food plan. But I think I'm back on track. The weather has gotten nice finally and I can go outside and open up the house to air it out. :^:
Hey Rileydog, try Volumetrics. I like it a lot. Even if I fall off the plan, (like I did this week) it's not a big fall because the plan allows you to eat a lot of food- foods with low Energy Density ratings - high in water and fiber like fruits and veggies. I've lost 13 lbs. in about 5 weeks. According to this plan, I eat a lot of things that fill me up but don't add calories.
Have a good week one and all.

Me again

Hi Ladies
Just a quick stop to say Hi! and let you know I am surviving. It seems when I say I'm going to be here more often that it doesn't happen. But things are getting better for me, and the biggest thing is that we are moved back into our house after 5 months of renovations.
It is a bittersweet feeling. I want to happy but knowing my son isn't here makes it hard. I am still dealing with my grief, but I know it takes time to heal.
You all have Blessed weekend, and I'll check in again soon.

luja 04-21-2007 07:41 PM

Lilion - congratulations on your horse! Sounds like so much fun.

RileyDog - were you looking for something like this? http://www.shape.com/eatright/7840

This one has all sorts of interesting calculators...

Rotilled the garden today - I need to contain myself for another week or so before I start planting. Here in lovely MN we could still get snow. But next weekend - the cold weather stuff is going in - radished and lettuce and all. I am SO excited to think about eating fresh from the garden later this summer.

Hi, Everyone,

I'm new here, but this sounds like a great place to make friends and get/give support on this big journey we're all on!

To introduce myself a little,............... I am currently 48 (will turn 49 next month on May 25th). I am married, and work full time. I am a dog lover and we have 3 dogs.

My goal is to be under 200 pounds by my 50th birthday next year, - 199 would be great! I haven't been under 200 since 1983, but I have a good feeling that this time I will be able to do it!

luja - Hello to a fellow Minnesotan! I see you just joined this month too.

Wishing you all a great day! :)

WELCOME to the new members!!!!!

Bearcub-- It's not a great answer, but we tend to start new threads when the old one gets long! Often it's every other week or so.

Patti -- I think figuring out what you "should" eat is a really personal decision. You may find that you like having a plan that spells that out for you. I try to limit calories, eat 5 servings of fruit and veg a day, get a certain amount of protein, etc. But what works for me might not work for you.

I started figuring out what I wanted to do by reading a lot about nutrition. I looked at government guidelines, starting learning about "whole foods" etc.

My eating plan has evolved over time, and may continue to shift as my goals shift.

I need to find something I can do for life, so I had to think about what would really work for me.

I don't know if any of this helps, but 3fc is a great place to ask about all sorts of different things, so keep asking. You might also want to check out forums on some of the other programs (like WW, or southbeach) to learn more.

rileydog14 04-22-2007 02:02 PM

Luja - thanks, yes, those were the types of calculators and info I was looking for. I need something like that to get me back on the right track.

Wyllen - I just feel out of control right now - thank you for responding

I will give this a look too - I don't think I've heard of it - but it sounds interesting.

Terri in MO 04-23-2007 07:50 AM

Hi ladies,

Wow, its Monday morning again. I've been up since 5 am because Danni decided that she would sneak into the closet and get a bone. Which would not have woken me up but it was the scrating on the carpet making a bed that did it. Guess she was tired of being alone in the dining room. Someone had asked if Danni is a mix. She was listed as a rottie and she certainly has all the body characteristics except for her face. She might be a Rotterman (rottie and dobie mix)

This morning, I finally got back on the stationary bike. I only did 20 mintues but it is a start. Time to get back into the groove. Lilion - you had mentioned what a long climb it is back onto the wagon and it certainly seems to have been for me.

We had a very good weekend. Very busy but it was good.

On Thursday, the contractor finally got out here to put the dirt around the foundation. I'm not real thrilled with the job he did because he built it up high and then didn't taper it off as much as I would have liked. So I have these mounds to work with for landscaping. But we needed to have dirt put around the foundation so push the water out into the yard. Then they dumped the extra dirt onto the garden. Big clods of dirt and they didn't really even it out. I had to retill the whole garden to get it less cloddy so that I could shift the dirt around and make it look like a garden area again. That was good exercise.

The Sunday school gals came down on Saturday afteroon and we planted a few permanent plants. We planted azela, rhododendron, something that looks like spirea but had a different name, and clematis. I still have the hibiscus to plant along with the geranimums, etc for pots. I think I'll do the herb garden under the bedroom window on that mound. I've decided on Chinese elm hedge to plant along the front of the deck so I need to get that ordered. I just saw that my burning bushes, blueberries, and butterfly plant ships next week. I just hope all this stuff stays alive and thrives.

Yesterday afternoon it was farrier day. Geez, that takes forever for three horses. I was on my feet for three hours. What didn't help was that the wind was blowing so hard it was miserable. That was the only thing I did outside.

I better go feed the horses and get ready for work. As you can see, I clearly have too much to do around here to work. Don't think my boss would feel the same.

Tonight I need to plant more stuff. DH may be buying tomatoes today. We also need to be getting ready for our trail ride weekend that is coming this weekend. Yep, I had a weight loss goal for this weekend that I set back in January or February and didn't work very hard to make it. Yep, I'm disapointed in myself and irritated that once again, I didn't want it bad enough to make it happen.

Welcome to the new ladies. Bearcub- Sorry about the new tread confusion. I usually start new threads on Monday mornings but not every Monday since we're a little slower posting group. About twice a month.

 to everyone! I'll try for individual replies tonight. I've read but just yacked on too long and run out of time.

Dyanm1 04-23-2007 12:47 PM

Good morning Ladies!

Had another crazy weekend, w/uncontrolled eating. I have vowed to change that. Going out and "partying" for 2 Saturdays in a row, is really taking it's toll. Again, we had a great time, but this time I went out w/DH, his co-workers and friends. The party seems to be whever we go. ;) . But Sunday is back to being "mommy". Last night my 3 year old decided to cut her hair like my SD. Which means, BANGS!! I was not and still am not happy about this. My daugther has beautiful curly hair, and BANGS do not go well w/curly! :( UGH! This morning I actually tried to put mousse in it to keep the hair back in her pigtail. By the time I got them to school, it was already getting curly. I hate to see what she's going to look like when I go to pick her up.

Valerie - Congrats on the new horse & your counter space. I wish we had some of that. It's not they aren't clean, we just dont have any! We have one counter w/ a sink in the middle. On the left is the coffee maker and on the right the microwave. Not much more than that and it's a royal pain! Thanks for the welcome! All I can say, is WOW a liquid diet. You sound very in control and know what you want to do. I wish I had the same.

Julie- Welcome. I think you will get alot of support here. All these ladies are wonderful. I just came back earlier this month, and I'm mad at myself for ever leaving! I have relatives in Minniesota (although, I've never been) and the funny thing is, my aunts name is Julie also.

Luja & Julie- I have to tell you a what my 5 year said to me. A few months back I was laying my bed and my daughter comes in and says "I really miss Aunt Julie. You know the one that lived in Pepsi Soda". and I said "where?" and she repeats, very slowly "Pepsi soda". It took everything I had not to start cracking up. I just tried to correct her and let her know that I would let Aunt Julie know. I swear from the mouths of babes.

Does anyone else watch "Celebrity Fit Club"? I love that show!

Vortex_VVV 04-23-2007 04:32 PM

Hi all. Just a quick post. I'm alive. Once again I've felt too harried to think about doing anything for myself. I have got to change that, soon, and permanently.

Hope all are well. Will try to read tonight and post again soon.

Iwillbe 04-24-2007 09:25 AM

baaaack again!

Good morning chickies, Here I am again. Don't ask how well I did with staying on program this past weekend.:sorry: That should be shame faced.

We had my Moms birthday party or get together is more like it. I counted 25 people besides my DH and myself. There was tons of food and cake and ice cream:drool: A good time was had by all. My Mom was overwhelmed by all of the attention and cried several times. We asked her why she was crying and she said she was so happy. It was all I could do to keep from crying with her. Mine was not from happiness though. Sending her back out to the nursing home is so hard!

I have the cleaning woman here today, thank goodness. The house didn't get so messed up, but the kitchen and den need a good cleaning. My son (grown man) made the biggest mess. He dropped a piece of cake icing side down on the kitchen floor, but at least he cleaned it up. LOL! His Mama taught him right! That was rule number one in my household, you make a mess, you clean it up! No argument about it. I am not the maid!:D

My sister is still here for a few more days. We are having a nice visit. She goes out to the home every day to visit with Mom while she can. Right now she is hiding out in her bedroom while the cleaning is going on, and you guessed it, I am hiding out in my office. I call it staying out of the way. LOL!

Things will get back to normal in a few more days and I will try to do some replies then. Hope everyone is having op days. Gonna get me back there too! Later chicks, Ruth

Lilion 04-24-2007 10:39 AM

Good Morning Ladies!

Ruth: I'm glad your mom's party was a success! It's wonderful that you made her so happy! I hope you enjoy the rest of your visit with the relatives. I'd love to have the cleaning lady come by my place later - send her my way! ;)

Angela: I totally understand being too harried to think straight! Try to find time to relax.:beach:

Dyan: Weekends are always my trial, especially when I have somewhere "social" to go. This weekend for instance, I went to a bbq and ended up eating TWO bratwursts and TWO hot dogs! Did your child cut her hair herself?!? I'm surprised she didn't wind up bald.

Terri- Has Danni been burying any more bones in the carpet? Your post makes me want to plant stuff!!! But then again, EVERYTHING makes me want to plant stuff. I just want a little garden so bad! My big plans continue to go astray. I can't wait to get started on something. My DH thinks we should move our little kitchen garden closer to the house. I don't even care so long as I get a garden! I don't want much...2-3 tomato plants, a couple of peppers, some pole beans, maybe some squash and cukes and carrots. I just talked to him and told him we HAVE to get some compost and such this weekend and put in my raised bed. That's all there is to it!

Sparkles: :welcome:

JoAnne

Rileydog: I can't begin to tell you what a "normal" food intake is. I love WW because if you can fit it in your points you can eat it. And if you slip up and use too many, there are zero point items you can still eat. Veggies, for instance, are usually zeros...eat all you like and don't count them. It's a nice way to get volume without the fat and calories. I know starting out I lived on salads and stir-fry and things with tons of veggies...big plates for little calories.

Valerie :woohoo: GO Gabriel! I know how much you've looked forward to riding that big boy! And you SHOULD! Like you said, he ain't no delicate flower! Those horses can haul grown men in 90 lbs of ARMOR! I think he'll have no trouble with you! As for medieval events, we WERE gearing up for the big, week-long camping event, but everyone we camp with has backed out this year and I think we may too. We are thinking about trying for a trip to Arizona in Feb. instead to an even bigger event....we'll see. Two days driving each way is rough. I am looking forward to hitting a few events, but with DH hours...we'll see. Speaking of DH, everything better with you???? (Yep, I'm nosey.)

A big  to everyone else!

The past weekend was again a poor food time for me. I ate bratwurst and hot dogs and didn't get my work-outs. Unless you count the hour-long bra shopping marathon. I always knew "the girls" would be the first to go...but boy have they went! I only owned one bra that kind of fit and the cups were fairly empty so I went thru the indignity of the whole measurement and salesclerk in the dressing room thing! :o I'm not particularly modest, but something about having a total stranger helping me put on and take off bras just exceeds my comfort zone. I'm quite sure that my "You know, I've been putting on bra's for 30 years...I think I can handle it!" was a hint to BACK OFF! Yeesh! On the up side, I finally found one that nearly fits...seems I'm between a B and a C right now, and in serious need of a lift. Ahhh gravity. :p

Tonight I get to choose between building planters, doing yard work, skim-coating the drywall in the bathroom (STILL not finished), making curtains, and about a dozen other things I need to do. So many projects, so little time.

And so little time to post. I've taken much longer than planned here...so I'm off! Love to all!

Justwant2Bhealthy 04-24-2007 04:42 PM

Yeah ... I think Spring is really here!!!

HI LADIES ~ ~ nice to see things picking up a bit around here; I've been busy lately as well. We had a beautiful weekend; rained Monday, but it's cool and sunny today. Looks like spring is here to stay; and we're expecting sunshine for a few more days.

My hand is on the mend and I can even type a little better now. We're trying to chase away the flu; so I hope it stays away. We think our furry babies had it too, and this may be why we've had a heck of a time getting rid of it. A friend thinks this may be so, as one tell-tale sign is repeated sneezing. Someone said that each sneeze spreads 90,000 germs (hmmm ... did someone really count those?) Well, I got dosed with half a million or so at least just yesterday!!!

We went out Sunday afternoon to a nearby lake just to enjoy the beautiful weather; so I went for a walk to get a little exercise at the same time. I'm workin' hard to stay OP and I'm not doing too badly, but there's always room for some improvement, I think.

DH is working on the rototiller; had to order parts and a new tire (hope it all works out for him as he's sure he can fix it). We try to get our cold-loving plants seeded by the May 24th holiday weekend here. DH built a new small greenhouse last year for the tomatoes; they grew well in there. Was able to use some to make two batches of chow chow relish (one red; one green). With the cost of veggies here, DH wants to make the garden bigger; I told him fine as long as he's willing to help do the work ~ LOL!!!

:welcome: TO ALL THE NEWBIES ~ LUJA AND JULIE! We have room for more on this 40+ thread/group.
BEARBUB ~ that same thing happened to me when I started!
RUTH ~ gee Ruth, life isn't so bad when you have a maid, is it???
ANGELA ~ school days are harried days; concentrate on the degree! Two of my nieces are graduating UV this spring and we're sooo ... proud of them!
TERRI ~ you're fortunate to be able to start planting already!
LILION ~ I like BUSY myself; burns lots of energy!
HEATHER ~ I take tips from all the plans out there; whatever helps!
DYAN ~ what I do at BBQ's is eat only the meat or only one bun plus all the salad/veggies I can find; this way I can stay on plan and eat well too.
JOANNE ~ will pray for you; keep well!

VAL ~ glad you were able to ride your horse again; best wishes with the liquids (I couldn't do that). I'm trying an idea a friend once rec ~ eat really lightly one day and regular the next and so on. I've mixed it in my plan and I really like it; I still stick to my numbers, but just lighter for three days!

PATTI ~ I'm with you on your quest; that was mine at the start too! I asked myself: how can I eat normal and balanced for the rest of my life if I don't know what that is? Like HEATHER, I searched books at the library from the health guides and health associations, and so on, until I had a better idea of what MODERATION is!!! You will find the right amount for you! I can't go under 1500 C's a day or I feel like I'm starving, so right now I'm at 2000-2100 daily; later on, I can go down by 100's to allow myself to still lose weight, but not feel hungry. It depends on what your target weight will be in the end. VOLUMETRICS does sound interesting; I eat lots of fruit, veggies, and fiber to feel full too!

Well, I hope all of you are in good health; and just try to stay OP as best you can. Take care; and keep on, keepin'on ~ your fellow encourager ... Rosebud.

Bearcub 04-24-2007 08:04 PM

Okay, i think I have the thread thing worked out! :D
I'm using a technique which really works WHEN I actually do it - I read about it in an article talking about how to change food related behaviors. I have written down on a file card 3 reasons why it is important to me to lose weight and whenever I have the urge to overindulge or binge, I take out the card and read the 3 reasons to myself 5 times. By the time I've finished reading them to myself, the urge has passed and I've reinforced why I'm doing this. It's a form of self-behavior modification, but the fact is, when I do it, it works. The key is the repetition:p Over time I am supposed to get to the point where I won't need the card because I will automatically think of those reasons and avoid the binge without it. I've discovered that my need to eat, that little devil that sits in the back of my mind and says, "Wouldn't a piece of pie taste really good, or a KFC dinner? " , also tries to keep me from pulling that card out of my purse/pocket, so I have to really make the effort. But when I do, it does work. :carrot:
Only 5 weeks till I go to camp. Yea!!!:D :D :D

Sometimes I think it would just be so easy to have prepackaged meals to open and eat, but the cost is high. I just need simple...

Anyhow, my DH and I attended an 8 hour diabetes class today. He is recently diagnosed. So much great info! And they gave him an idea of exactly what a daily menu should look like. Gosh – it seemed pretty restrictive. It was basically carb counting. They first showed how to count the carbs, then, also gave us a handbook on very low carb items and all the exchanges. Really it’s all about portion control and getting back to basics. I was so impressed and thankful to the nurses that they allowed spouses to attend. I think I am more excited and motivated to follow the ideas than hubby, but he’ll come along soon.

I ate poorly all weekend – I knew beginning today that I would be starting over again with new vigor. Or at least that’s the excuse I used. I think I'm back up over 300 - don't really know. My scale gets goofy around that weight. I don't really want to know right now.

Rosebud – I will be getting out my books and looking at ideas again for healthy menus. The last time I lost so much weight – my thought was to eat the number of calories a 135 lb person should eat. And I seemed to lose so fast, my skin was loose. But it was too fast, I think.

Bearcub – I love that idea of listing the reasons to lose weight – I have a list of reasons on my palm pilot that I can read periodically. I think it’s time to look at the list again, and again, and again.

Dyan – so funny about ‘pepsi soda’ – I loved it!:)

Lilion – thanks about the WW info. I have friend at work that does WW and she really likes it. I was just completely frustrated over the weekend.

Thanks so much for each and everyone!!

Heather 04-25-2007 12:03 AM

Patti -- A couple of people mentioned volumetrics and I just wanted to mention there's a volumetrics forum on 3fc around somewhere.

Angela - -I can so relate. My grading mountain just keeps growing!!! Chin up!

Iwillbe 04-25-2007 09:29 AM

Good morning!

Hump day ladies! Now when I still worked that was important, but now it just seems to mean another week is almost over and the year is flying by. Shoot, I am going to have another birthday before I am ready. Birthdays are just numbers or so they say, but gals my numbers are adding up fast!:tantrum:

I am on my own for a couple of hours at least. My sister and DH went to take Mom to the Dr. for what I hope is her last visit with the orthopedic. He should release her today. It has been five months since she had the hip replacement surgery. She still can't walk and I don't believe she will ever be able to walk again. Her knees just collapse when she tries. Everybody says what do you expect from a 100 year old woman, but she was walking before she broke her hip and still going to church and out to eat at least twice a week.....that is what I expect!

I know one thing for sure, I have got to get myself under control with the eating. Sounds so simple and yet I am having a hard time making up my mind to get back op. SOOO stupid to get off program when one is doing good.

Rosebud, whoa, I don't have a maid, wish I did. What I do have is a woman who comes every second week and goes over the house for me. She was my Moms cleaning woman and I kept her after Mom left to visit my sister. We didn't realize Mom wouldn't be coming back home then. I just took my Moms days. Maid, oh ha ha!

Lilion, if I could talk Mary into coming to Mo I would send her to you:D. The problem is that she is getting up in age and doesn't always do a good job of cleaning. I have had to go behind her and dust. After she has left of course. I don't think she ever moves anything to clean. LOL!

Rileydog, I agree that I think it would be easier to get prepackaged food to eat, but you are right about the cost. I have to feed DH too, so what would we do about them? I wish it were simple to plan and have instant meals.....siggghhhh!

Dyan, partying bad, op good! LOL! Well, at least you enjoyed it. Start all over again. The story of my life.

Bearcub, Gee I wish reading cards would stop me from wanting to eat the bad stuff. I am glad it works for you. I have tried putting a picture of myself at my highest weight on the fridge and even that didn't stop me. It darn sure should have, cause I looked like a barrel with clothes on!

Hi Terri, how are the doggies doing these days. You are one busy lady. How does a calorie stand a chance of making a fat cell on you? I get worn out just reading all that you do.:tired:

Hello to Julie, Luja, Joe Anne, Angela and wyllen:wave: Hope that all of you are having a great op day.

I shall return.... Ruth

Lilion 04-25-2007 09:33 AM

Good Morning Ladies!

Rileydog, if you are the cook of your family, maybe you should just make meals in accordance with the diabetic diet? That would mean your DH had to follow along and if you are eating the same thing, I suspect you will lose weight too! I've read those diets and they are pretty darn healthy and usually pretty close to a South Beach or Atkins-type diet. Just a thought.

Rosebud, I'm trying to get a small garden in this year...at least containers if nothing else. I'd love to have a greenhouse! That would be wonderful!

Everyone else:  Sorry no real time to post today. I'm running late. I'm working on staying away from the pastries in the office for Admin. Professionals Day...Since I brought them, it's even harder to stay away!!!

Have a great day ladies!
