Default New, and looking for buddies!

Hi everyone. My name is Beth and I'm a 31 year old new nurse graduate. Let me tell you about myself. I'm arty and love to paint and draw. I try to play the fiddle, but I think I mostly torture my cat. I'm a recovered/ing binge and purger and have found a lot of ways to not b/p (binge and purge) that I'd love to share with others who need it. I also like to hear from other people who have similar issues and or need support. During my time in nursing school I gained almost 50 pounds. My day for change came at a school health fair when I got on the scale and realized how much I had gained. Over the past year I've lost 30 pounds (up and down) and still have about 20 to go. I eat a lot of veggies and protein, some carbs, and limit my sugar, processed food, and salt. I allow myself breaks and treats though; I found this helps with the urge to b/p.
Even if you don't have issues with b/p and want a buddy you should contact me. For me losing weight is more about being healthy than anything else.

One for every five pounds lost!

Your eating plan sounds a lot like mine. Good plan!

Thanks for the welcome! It's not always easy to stick to a eating plan that limits junk food, but I do take breaks. For instance, after five more pounds I'm going to have a chicken strip basket. hmmmmmm.....worth the pain!!
Great job with your weight loss!! Sixty pounds?! That's fantastic
I think this site will help me achieve my goals in a healthy way/

Hey, I have similar issues. I have struggled with b/p since I was 16 or so. It seems to go in cycles, and right now I'm doing very well. I actually took part in a research study at University of Iowa where they studied purging disorder. That would likely be my diagnosis, rather than typical bulimia.

I am struggling with the 20 pounds I gained since I stopped purging in 2007. Cutting back on the salt has been reducing my cravings, although I'm not sure how why that works. I've also found that moderately intense exercise does wonders for reducing my need for chocolate.

That's interesting about the sodium, I wonder why that is as well. Maybe because it increases water retention and thirst? I had to struggle last night after watching a Dairy Queen episode, but luckily I was able to sit in a hot bath and talk to my folks about it. Now, I plan on having a treat once I've lost five pounds! I also plan on getting some cute Halloween socks with the money I would have wasted on the the binge. I tend to be more of a anorexic/ bulimic, and it's an on and off struggle.
I have to remind myself that the b/p will only last a short amount of time, where the guilt I feel for caving-in will last much longer!

While I am not a b/p...I have had binge tendencies. I watched my best friend b/p for years and saw what it did to her. I can sympathize with what you struggle with. She still struggles but is getting better every year. It has been about 8 years since her last b/p cycle, she is also bi-polar and since being diagnosed and sticking with a treatment plan of both therapy and meds she has made great strides. Now she is concentrating on take off weight the right way.
Any time you need someone to talk to, I'll be happy to listen. I may not have b/p, but I understand how it affects not only you but the people who love you.

What's the difference between bulimia and purging disorder? I've never heard of that! I've had what I've always called "episodes" of bulimia since I was about 18. There will be times where I will binge and purge several times in one day for as long as a week, and then I can go a month or longer without doing it at all. I did it once yesterday, and it had been a couple of weeks since the last time.

I have always wished I had someone to seek support from when I go through this. I would love to get some strategies to help me prevent an episode of binging and purging.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!
