Default Newbie, loves beer, hates diets. Must change both.

Greetings! I've recently turned 33 and am about 50 lbs overweight, which doesn't sound like a lot, but I'm only 5' 2'' so I'm starting to look like something you bounce on a playground. The problem is, I probably consume about at quarter of my daily calories in beer and snacks. I LOVE beer and snacks. Gosh. I want to lose weight but the thought of giving these things up is killing my motivation. I keep trying envisioning how hot this fat suit is going to be come July in Philadelphia and how 'not-hot' I'm looking in short sleeve shirts, dripping with sweat. I think I need to be accountable for my actions. Any thoughts?

Hello! I think you gotta ask yourself which is more important...beer and snacks in a fat suit or a fit healthy body! Now's the time to make some changes though, maybe you can plan on sticking to healthy eating and excercise 6 days a week and allow yourself your beer and snack day for awhile. Eventually you are going to start feeling better and I bet the beer and snacks wont be quite so important.

My advice would be to 1)figure out what you want 2)set some goals 3)find something you can live with and most importantly, dont expect perfection right off the bat. Ease yourself into it if you've got to. You'd be amazed what a difference even little changes can make.

Good luck!!

Check out calorie counting, you should definetly change your lifestyle, but that doesn't mean giving up everything you love. You really can eat whatever you want in moderation if you plan for it.

I too love beer! I was worried about that at first to because not only was I having to cut out beer but sweets.....OMG I wondered if I would live to see the next week hahahaha. But honestly you have to think about what means more to you and after about a week without that stuff you find yourself not even missing it like you thought you would. Every once in awhile I have a beer and it just doesnt taste as good as it used to. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!
Another little trick that worked for me was I bought a really cute outfit that I would normally never dream of wearing. I hung it on my door so I had to look at it every day. I tried it on once a week......its now way to big on me

Hi there, I am the same as you love love love beer and once I have some beer the snacks are surely to follow.. There are lots of low calorie beers out there.. When I have want to have a few beers (who can really drink just one) I just plan for it.. I watch my calories that day and work out a little more to compensate for it.. I have done this the last 3 weekends and it seems to be working for me.. I work really hard on counting those calories all week that I feel I need a little treat on weekends.. Good luck..

Welcome! If you go calorie counting, you don't have to cut out your beer and snacks. The big key will be planning for it and watching your portion sizes. I have one day a week where I can eat anything I want, but I have a few rules:

1. I am not allowed to stuff my face, I still have to watch how much I eat - just not what I eat.

2. I am not allowed to go buying a bunch of stuff for this day. I don't want that stuff hanging around the rest of the week.

3. I am not allowed to "save" up calories for one big pig out meal. I eat 4-5 smaller meals per day to help me with portion control issues, so I must stick to that. I think it is actually good practice for when I reach my goal and need to maintain.

4. No napping on my free day. I must stick to my usual schedule and no sleeping in the next day. Routine is the key to keeping me from going off plan from this one day.

5. I must jump right back on plan the following day.

6. Most importantly, I must enjoy my food on this day and feeling guilty is not allowed. That rule is sometimes hard for me, but again it will help with my skewed view of food - everything can be had in moderation!

Good luck to you, whichever plan you choose to follow!

I also loooove beer. I'm also a beer snob, so those watery low calorie beers are crap to me. I decided to cut it out all together for the first month and then work one or two in a week...

The biggest problem for me is drinking is such a social thing... on Friday i met some friends at a bar and only drank water with lime for a couple hours before I left. My friends were confused and bugged me, but I stood strong. It's only my second week, if they don't stop bugging me about it, I will have to cut out my social time with them. I just hate the thought of killing my social life just because I'm on a diet.

I am heading out to a BBQ right now... lots of beer and delicious food, but I made some pineapple, tomato, and artichoke kabobs for my friend to grill for me, and am armed with my monster size water bottle.

I used to be one of the girls that could keep up with the men on beer tolerance. Seriously, why was I proud of that? LOL! Anyway, when I drank, not only did the beer have calories, but the food that I had resisted beforehand was like molten heaven. Pizza and Doritos are defnitely danger foods around beer!

As I started cutting back on the beer, I realized that the parties were actually more fun when I wasn't quite so hammered. Sometimes I didn't even drink at all. People kept asking me what was wrong. I just said, you know I think I am getting too old for this. They all shook thier heads and agreed. As a group, we all drink a lot less. I think it's for the best, really.

Now that I have started the weight loss journey, I am glad that I had already begun working on that habit. I drink water or diet soda (which is a splurge now) and just enjoy my friends more. It never really was about the beer and food anyway.

Only down side - now when I say/do something off the wall, there isn't beer to blame. Yup, I really can be that ditzy sometimes and no, I don't know what trump is.

I'm not a beer fan...can't stand the smell actually...but I am a snacks/sweets adict. I just had to make a decision of what was more important, the snacks or my health. I decided I was more important and I needed to be in control, not my food cravings.

Best of luck to you in your decision and journey...know that there is lots of support here.

I LOVE beer too, really love the taste of it but like others have mentioned, inhibitions can go right out the room when it comes to snacks and stuff... especially when with friends, socializing.

I actually drink a non alcoholic beer once in awhile at BBQs, etc. so I can get the feel and taste of the beer, but keep my guard up at the same time. It works for me!

Hi, count me in with the rest of the beer lovers. When I was losing weight (mainly last year, I weighed 185lbs) I switched to light beer. I then worked my arse off. If I knew I was going out in the evening I worked harder in the morning and exercised for longer. I was effectively buying beer and junk food allowance with exercise. I tracked calories and exercised and I would do long exercise sessions, doing things that I didn’t particularly enjoy but that used a lot of energy. I would try and burn 900 - 1000 calories. Then in the evening I would drink guilt free with my friends knowing that I wasn’t doing much damage to the scales (although perhaps to my liver!).

Ooo! Pick me! Pick me!! I am a beer LOVER. While I was PG with my son, it was the one thing that I REALLY craved. Like a PP said about trying non-alcoholic beers - you could get the taste, but without the munchies to go with it (but NA beer still has all the calories)

While I was PG, I tried every NA beer I could find. Guiness makes a NA beer called "Kaliber". It's pretty tasty. Becks NA was the best, I thought. I REFUSED to try O'Dules (sp?). St. Paulie's was pretty good. Henikin (sp?) makes one too that I don't remember being too bad.

I LOVE BEER. I love GOOD beer. The GOOD thing about good beer is that the alcohol % is usually higher - so you can have one or two as opposed to 3 or 4 cheap ones.

I will NOT be giving up booze. beer, wine, liquor - yum, yum, yum. I enjoy it with friends, I enjoy it with family. And I plan to drink Black and Tans on Saturday at the Hartford St. Paddy's Day parade.

BUT, what I am TRYING to do is to limit the days I have booze. I COULD easily have a drink each night, but I try to limit it to only one or two nights a week. And now that I have a one year old, binge drinking is a thing of the past. (it is nice to not have handovers anymore!)

Well... now that I sound like a complete alcoholic, I am going to get back to work!
