Stevia

Anyone use it?? I've been using it for about a year now and love it as an alternative to Splenda....I'm bummed today because I am out of Stevia here at work and forgot to bring some from home - as much as I hate to, I guess I'll suck it up and use a packet of splenda.

I'm liking it more. I had to try a couple different brands to find one that I liked. I didn't like the liquid kind very much. I really like Trader Joe's in the powder form. It also has lactose in it as a filler. I've been using it to sweeten up my greek yogurt a little and in my hot tea.

I use the powder packets from Whole Foods in my hot tea! It's great!

Does the Trader Joe's stevia have an aftertaste?

wendyland 01-28-2010 11:02 AM

I think they all have a bit of an after taste. Trader Joes does, but I think it still tastes better than others that I've tried. I've never tried truvia, but I'm weary of it because it's processed. I can get used to the taste. It tastes better than plain tea.

I could never get used to the aftertaste. I just do coffee and tea w/o sweetener and use Splenda occasionally for other things.

I use stevia occasionally...I like the liquid flavored one in my coffee sometimes. Mostly I just avoid sugar. I never, ever use artificial sweetners...I'll not get up on my soapbox this time, so don't worry...:)

I use trader joes stevia on my oatmeal and sometimes in hot drinks like Pero. Also add a packet to 1/2c part skim ricotta cheese with some cinnamon for a high protein "Dessert"

However, the official food coach on another site I subscribe to says that Stevia causes a cephalic response (making you crave other sweet things) just like artificial sweeteners do. Anyone know anything about that?

I have heard that they will still make you crave sweets. I've never been able to quit sugar foods long enough for my cravings to stop in order to test that theory out. I think that if you ate low carb and zero sugar and were still craving sweets, then you should take a closer look at if your sweeteners are giving you cravings.

I love stevia! I actually prefer it to real sugar in my drinks!

I have used stevia tea bags to sweeten my tea for quite awhile. I'm so glad that they now make it available in powder.

I discovered stevia a few months back and absolutely love it! I started out buying Truvia packets but have since switched over to the powder they have at Fresh & Easy (it's just like the powder mentioned at Trader Joe's but is a little cheaper). I mostly use it for iced tea, unsweetened cranberry juice, and fruit smoothies. :D
