The 6am Workout

  • I, like many of you, have a full time job, a kid, a husband, blah blah blah. I used to try to rush home at 5:30, make dinner, eat, help with homework, workout, pay attention to my husband, get ready for the next day, etc. etc...and I never worked out. That was the one part of my evening that was easiest to remove.
So, I started getting up 40 minutes earlier and hopping on the treadmill. Yes, it sucked the first time I did it. I was half asleep for the first five minutes but then something cool happened-I woke up! I had energy! I didn't want to GET OFF the darned thing and get ready for work.
Let me tell you, it's awesome. I have energy all day, I can work out in peace and quiet and I feel fab. Granted, I'm still not losing (I'm convinced I'll be 221.5 FOREVER), but I feel good. And in the end, isn't that the point? Try IT!!!!

    (me at 6am)
  • WTG girl! Work that treadmill out. Show it who's boss.

I would love to be able to do that but with fibromyalgia I have to stretch a considerable amount of time or I could cause a flare up. I don't mean doing stretches like exercise, I am talking about letting my body slowly stretch through normal movement. I can't get up and do strenous work.

Many years ago I started walking in the mornings. My friend and I were walking about 2 miles every morning. It wasn't long before I was having cramps and pain. It was deblitating. That was around the time the dr diagnosed me with fibro. Much better to do my workout in the evenings. But boy, oh boy, I would LOVE to get up and workout in the mornings.
  • I love a.m. workouts!! You're right - it does stink at first - I'm rarely awake the first 5min - but it's awesome.

I have been running in the evening (like 8pm) because our baby has been up and down in the night so much that I can't guarantee when he will get up. Lately he's settled into a 4am feeding and I go back to bed til 6:45. It may be time to start trying the a.m. workout again. It' so much better to get it out of the way in the morning!

Thanks for the reminder - I'm so glad it is working for you!! Keep it up, you can do it!
  • I started working out in the morning rather than after work. It's awesome knowing at the end of the work day & can go home & do whatever I want or need to do. I've added an extra 2 hrs. to my evening.
  • That is a great idea...if you have a treadmill at home. My gym is approx 18 minutes away. So I would have to get up at 4:15 dress in 5 minutes...drive to the gym...work out for 1 hour...drive home (must be home by 5:45) so I can get the kiddos up and ready for school while I shower & dress myself.
In order to do this I would have to go to sleep (not just go to bed, but actually be asleep) by 9 - 9:30pm. Which isn't gonna happen. I'm lucky to get in bed at 10 & fall asleep by 11.
  • If only I could get up in the morning. I struggle with it so bad. What time do you go to bed at night?
  • I'm single with no kids, so it's possible for me to go to the gym 15 mins away. The gym opens at 5:30 & I've been getting there at around 5:40. I work out for an hour & am home by 7:00.

I also have flexibility with my work schedule. If I get to work at 8:15 or 8:30 nobody will yell and scream since I tend to work through lunch and stay past 5:30. Previously, I'd get to work at 7:15-7:30 and work until 5:30 or 6:00, so I'm starting to put myself first (for once!)

SBD Sass, I'm a night-owl so it's been tough. But, yesterday when the alarm went off I hit the snooze and when it went off again, I just said to myself that I had to get up. It was the same this morning. Before I started doing this, I'd go to bed at midnight at the earliest. The past couple of nights, I've fallen asleep by 10:30.

I used to be a single mom living in a small apartment = no time and NO TREADMILL. I lost over 80lbs (the first time...sigh) using exercise video tapes. I bought them cheap off of eBay and could get up and do one before work OR do one after the kids went to bed.

WEIGHT LOSS DOES NOT REQUIRE A GYM - JUST A DESIRE.
  • I'm afraid if I don't get up in the morning and do the workout first thing, that I won't get it done at all that particular day and I'm not willing to chance it. For this reason the alarm goes off at 6am and if hubby doesn't roll over to cuddle I'm up by 6:10 but if he does, I'm not up until 6:30, lol...

Either way, I'm up and out there using DVDs because I don't have a treadmill or elliptical. I LOVE it and it really helps in a lot of ways to get me through a stressful day.

    Amen!
  • I switched to morning workouts about two months ago. I know what you mean about being asleep on the treadmill at first. The first couple of days, I wanted to be anywhere else but on that treadmill.

However, like you said, you get used to it and actually feel much better throughout the day. I also found that not only did I have more time at night, but I started sleeping much better.
  • I'm such a morning person! I love morning workouts. You're right. It definitely gives day long energy! I used to get up at 5:00 so I could be at the gym by 5:30. I don't have a gym membership now, but I'm still getting up early for a workout before going to work. I love it.
  • I sometimes wish I had a gym membership.
I didn't mean to come off the wrong way in saying to "just hop on the treadmill"-I understand that people don't have treadmills and ellipticals and stuff in their houses for one reason or another. I was just amazed at how I felt working out in the morning
  • Today was Day 3 for me, and I still love it. I think it helps improve my stress & attitude throughout the day---especially knowing I don't have to work out AFTER a tough day at work.

I also enjoy the peace & quiet of the gym in the mornings. Much more relaxing than after work when everyone is there.

My biggest problem is hitting the snooze.
