Question Nutritional Yeast

I've seen a few people talking about putting it in their recipes. What exactly is it? Is it just for extra nutrients? What's the flavor like?

Thanks in advance!

Nutritional yeast is kind of cheesy. Vegans often use it to substitute for a cheese like flavor in recipes. I made 2 recipes the past 2 days that used nutritional yeast. One was for vegetarian italian sausages (aka seitan) and the other was for an enchilada type recipe.

Nutritional yeast alone doesn't taste good but I know some people really like the flavor and sprinkle it on popcorn.

Fortified nutritional yeast generally contains vitamin b12 which it is hard to get if you don't eat animal products.

I've been using nutritional yeast for many years. I use it mainly as a base for a popcorn/snack topping. I put about a cup or so in a blender, then add garlic & onion powders, a bit (or more) of hot chili powder, some cheese powder (if I have any), and whatever else might spark up the flavor (light on any salt, though). Run it through the blender to mix, then put it in a shaker. Good on buttered toast, pita wedges, hot popcorn...
