Losing too fast?

  • Hi all! I'm new to this side of the board and just wanted to introduce myself along with one of my little problems that I'm having.

I feel as if I'm losing too much weight in one month. My goal was to sustain a loss of 5lbs a month the most but frankly I've lost 8lbs in total. I began to lose at the beginning of September and for the first two weeks I lost about 4lbs. During mid-September I plateaued, or so I thought , only to find that I had lost another 4lbs at the beginning of October.

I'm a little concerned that I lost too much. I wanted to ask if it is normal to lose just below 10lbs a month. I don't want to lose weight too fast because I want myself to adjust slowly to my changes in my new 'lifestyle' and I'm in no hurry to lose so much in so little time.

Thanks for taking the time to read
  • Uh..........quite frankly I'm a 'lil jealous and I am sure other girlies here are too. I wish this was my problem!!!!!

Actually a loss of 1-2lbs a week is totally normal, fine and healthy so 8.5lbs a month even would fall nicely into this pattern.

If, though, you are interested in slowing weight loss down, you should try eating a bit more (healthy foods of course!).

ETA: If you are just begining your weight loss journey you are probably losing weight more quickley than you will later on, some of this might even just be water weight. Eventually your body will sort itself out into it's own rhythm. Not to worry.
  • jealous!!

Good on you for recognising that it can be a concern to lose too fast though.

IMO I think you should assess if the weight you have lost has happened because of the right reasons. You have eaten properly, exercised responsibly and have seen the reward.

Just remember that the slower it comes off the more likely it is that it will stay off, but if you can maintain the weight you have lost without resorting to unhealthy methods, you are on the right track.

If despite your calculations you have lost more than you intended, your body is obviously ready to get rid of those lbs. Believe me, eventually you will be begging your body to get rid of those last 10lbs and you will hit more plateaus on the way

    and lastly
  • I'm losing at about the same rate, 9 lbs in 3 weeks. Some of it is water weight, I think. I feel less bloated.

    Congrats.
  • Yeah, if its the start of a new program, sometimes that can signal quick 8-10 pound weight loss... Most of which is that initial bloat/water weight/whatever they want to call it thing (I'm very scienctific, I know)

It'll probably slow down, but I've heard 8-10 pounds a month is healthy :/
  • I think that's a healthy amount. Actually, week before last I lost 7 pounds, just in that week, and now I am totally plateaued. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most likely you will have months with big losses and some months with not so much. Just be thankful and don't worry!
  • If you haven't been eating healthy or exercising at all I would say this is a healthy amount to lose. Some of it is probably water weight as well, make sure you are drinking at least 64oz. of water day and more if you exercise. Two pounds a week is healthy.
  • I wouldn't say this is the 'beginning' but not so far from it, so it would make sense that I would have lost more to start off. I have heard about water weight contributing to the huge lbs lost though.
Thanks , not too overly concerned but still wanting to slow down the losing process.
LOL Daisy, yes I am going to be BEGGING for this moment when I do hit plateau
