lol daisy! you got me!!
Well, I'm back after 7 days off. I jumped on the treadmill, and it was like starting all over again. AT one point I had to step off the treadmill, because I thought I might faint. I was only going at a 4.8 on level 1 with intervals of 4.2 on a incline! It took me 30 minutes to do 2 miles! I used to do 3 miles in that amount of time, granted I wasn't doing intervals,a nd going much faster.... Anyways...I think I would like to check out the running program you guys have been using...where do I find it again? |
LOL! ;)
here is the link to the couch to 5k that most people are doing. i think you should join up and we can progress together. |
Ok Daisy. I printed out the program. I think I can start at Week 6 though, since I have been running for a bit. Just to get me back to where I was, I'm going to start with Week 6 Tommorrow.
I also found more motivation, to really push myself. I got my 10 yr. hs reunion invitation in the mail...it's in about a month...YIKES! |
I hate starting over again - It's like you feel so weak and lethargic and can't go as fast - remember never break for more than a week!!! Or you will feel bad!
Anyway - at least I got in a couple of workouts! I ran my 3.4 not so fast - but more importantly I went surfing for the first time. If I was ever bad at some sports, I am def bad at this one - I could barely stand up - I kept rising to my knees! But I have to keep practicing this one move - called the pop up - which gets you from your belly to your feet - it reminds me of the jump thru yoga move (from downward dog to standing up) that I could never do - But I have faith - I was shown a bit easier way to do it - and if I can just keep practicing - I am determined to be a surfer :) Plus - it's another great workout - I'm sore in places i've never been sore before - and in my forearms!! But back to running - so I can keep up my endurance for running after my surfboard when it rushes back to shore and then I have to retrieve it and bring it back out! B |
'm going to do my workout again tongiht...Week #5
|
That couch to 5K looks about like what my friend and I have been doing on our own. The times of walking and jogging vary a little bit for us. We jog until we just can't anymore and walk for a bit to recover. We try and push it a little bit more every couple days. It's so cool because I notice our recovery time is getting shorter and our jogging time last longer. The human body amazes me! Jogging has helped me learn to listen to my own body a bit more
|
Hey jessie - I notice you are in LA - anyone else? My friend told me to do the nike 5k challenge - it's a bit pricy - 30 bucks - but it could be a good challenge for those of us in the area. (This sounds bad, but if it's 30 bucks I would prefer a longer race.) I think it is sept 24th. wait - sorry!! it is five miles. so it's good for me! Anyone else up for a challenge????

I'm back, i'm starting over on the C25k, but that's ok, its something.
|
That sounds cool bida! I know I'm not ready for something like that just yet though. Someday I'm going to do the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure :)
|
How is everyone doing? is there a lapse in running?
I finally may be getting back into it in a regular bases - There are Hills here - Hills!!! I just moved into my new place - and am impressed that the terraine is a bit more challenging. I ran almost 4 miles yest - and may have done more - but my subconscious always tells me to stop at some point - it was getting very dark out and was almost 9 - but I felt so much safer than in my old place - which is a really good feeling. I lve my new neighborhood. I lived in the "ghetto" before - near USC school - which is where I was afraid to go out after dark alone - and always running along side traffic. Now - I have hills - its a residential area - so very little - if any traffic. Not too many people - nor sketchy people out - and one day I can run to a park I used to work out at. Yay! Now I must keep up with it - as I have a five miler race in 2 months! I think my goal is to run it at a 9 minute mile pace. That'd be good. talk to you soon! B |
I've been mostly walking lately....ran a bit today. I'm trying to get back in it. I've been having problems with the sides of my calves. They seem to kinda cramp up. My whole calf gets rock hard, but the pain comes from the sides. Jogging seems to help usually, but today nothing worked I had to come to a complete stop for like 5 minutes. I can't figure out why this happens. I stretch pretty good before and after...anyone have any ideas?
|
lactic acid build up - are u getting enough water?? that is my first idea - let me think about it :)
|
I think I'm getting enough water....I usually take my dog for a short walk before I go jogging. When we get back I drink a 16.9 oz bottle and then I drink another one while jogging...and then one more when I'm done on the way home. And usually I'll have one or two more during the rest of the day.
|
are you getting enough sodium - electrolytes? is your short walk pretty active? I doubt it's too much for you to go running...and you said you are stretching properly. hrm. have you looked on line at all?
B |
It's a brisk walk, but it's only about 2 blocks, so I don't think it really affects it. I've looked online once but didn't get much out of it....I think I'll go google it again. Thanks for the ideas :D
|
How is your cramping going Jessie?
Who else is running out there?? need some motivation? I do! Yesterday I like failed as a runner. I maybe ran a mile I don't even know - I think it was a bit more - but I like had no energy to run anymore - usually I do a min of 3 unless I'm going to do weights - which I have n't done in a while. so I made myself feel a little better by doing some squats, leg lifts/kicks, lunges, and those things you do on your hands and knees - but still...I guess I haven't done things like that in a while. At least today I got 4.5 in - guess I made up for it a bit - gotta get up to 6 though again one day. I think I can - there are lots of hills here - but its like I never wanna run anymore after a certain point - and not cuase I am too tired - bored, ADD, who knows! Ok need to get ready to boogie! B |
Ok chickadees sorry been so busy...I've been reading all your posts.
Got 2 miles in today. Was dripping sweat by the end but felt like a workout mega rock star. Has been a while since I ran...felt like home coming back to it. Easy to remember how I got addicted in the first place! Jesse - hows it goin :) SUSHI - Where are you girl? Bida - you cannot falter...you are that voice of reason that pushes me...i demand you get out of your rut! nah I'm kidding...but seriously girl you are stronger than this whats going on? |
I got in a 2 mile run...I did intervals, so I had a nice break of flat and a 3% incline....
I was soaked, and I felt great-can't wait to do it again tonight! |
I had an awesome run two days ago -
5 miles - fast - yest I did 3 miles I think. But better news - i think I have my first kind of real date ever on friday. I mean, i had a boyfriend once - i dont know if we really went on dates... hehe go run! |
So how was your date bida? :)
I think I figured out what was causing the cramping. Anytime I would eat or drink anything besides water is when it seemed to happen. Saturday I had nothing before and I really pushed it....didn't have any cramps. I'm gonna just keep going without eating beforehand if possible and see what happens. How was everyone's weekend? |
Oh yeah - I never eat before I run - or I get cramps - but usually in my stomache - not in my legs. Esp if I eat too much at somepoint on that day.
The date was very romantic - what is your take - he took me to a v. expensive (esp on a student's budget) restaurant with a great view of the city. My guy friend says it puts too much pressure on both of us. But being wined and dined is fun. Need to do a long run - am joining the triathalon team tomorrow methinks. B |
Ran 2 mi on Friday night. Felt great. Going to do it again at the gym tonight but maybe see if I can up the mileage a bit.
spill - love those kinds of runs...such hard work but great when you are done. bida - WWOOOOOOOHHHOOOOO yay for your date, sounds like it went great! jesse - I think avoiding eating or drinking anything except water before a run is a great idea. I noticed the same thing happens to me if I eat before. |
Hello all! I just joined today and I really like the dynamic of the board.
My goal is to start running regularly again. Back in high school I ran track (200m and 400m). In college I did not compete, but I ran on my own off and on. At my best, I was running 4-5 miles 4 days per week. Well, I haven't run regularly since 2002. Running is the BEST exercise. When I ran I did not have to do any other exercise. I was in the best shape of my life! 134lbs size 4. I long to return to that day. (But I realize that I was 19-21 then...I'm 25 now and I'm sure genetics might play a role in things.) Anyway, I've started a running program to get back to the good old days. I've done the following Mon, Tues, and Weds of this week. My goal is to do it 4 days per week. I would appreciate your feedback. Basically, it is a mix of walking and running on a treadmill. Walk 3 mins @ 4.0 Run 2mins @ 6.0 Repeat 5 times for a total of 25 mins Walk 2 mins @ 3.3 to cooldown I used to run in the past and could probably just kick things into gear, but I want to go slow and steady and build my way back up. Please let me know what you think and if this is a good way to ease my way back into running. Thanks! |
Great job getting back on track!
I have not run since friday - which is very bad - every day I keep on putting it off - which is bad - means the wieght I have lost will come back up - but I keep getting home late and being hungry and needing to buy food. anyway! back on track tomorrow! as for getting back on track - if you were once a regular runner, I say just go for the running as far as you can then walk - as your body will get back into it a little faster than others - maybe try to go a whole mile! But other than that I think you are doing the right thing. b - eating too much and not running enough - no down time allowed! go go go! |
:welcome: WHITWHIT!!!
I'm going through a runners slump, Tues I ran a mile, and it felt like I had been running for an hour, really it was more like ten minutes, but it was killing me.....I haven't jumped back on the treadmill to run again yet. This morning I thought about it, but instead did a brisk 30m treadmill WALK....WTF is wrong with me???? I'm still slumpin here, I hope; I can get my butt bck to the gym tonight for a nice night run. |
that happens to me - I don't know why - maybe I will figure it out one day - changes in eating? stress? people? who knows! good luck and I hope I get on a bike today - I've been having an excersize slump myself!
B |
I'm hoping to reserve my weekends at least for some running this month, starting w/ tomorrow, I'll post if I actually do it, but I'm hoping too... Good luck everyone!
|
I've been away for ages and slacking big time on my running but I'm back on track now!
I did a similar program to C25k and completed my first 5k race in June. Lack of motivation coupled with summer holidays and heatwaves meant my running took a nose dive in my list of priorities. But I've signed up for a 10k on October 15th and its finally given me the motivation I need to get back to the schedule. Im at wk3 of a 8wk schedule and tho its killing me sometimes Im really enjoying it. I did approx 5k yesterday in 30mins and on that basis I'm hoping to complete the 10k in under 70mins. Anyways, thats enough of my yawn inducing chatter! |
wooo hoooo, welcome to the jungle baby! We're in the jungle!
I just got my runner high! I ran a little over 3 miles tonight. I wish I could bottle this feeling! |
man - i haven't had a runner's high in so long! are eloctrodes going off in your brain? that was my favorite runner's high???
getting back into running - I have joined the triathalon team here at school, today we had a big run, for me! It wasn't long, but it was hard - so I worked hard. Yeah - go me ;) Ok - I need to eat! oh yeah - and go bone! races are certainly motivation - that is why I signed up on this team - and I am running a 5k or 5 miler on teh 24th...ahhh! B |
Sorry I have been MIA ladies, I have shin splints. Covered a cross country meet for the paper last night and was absolutely jealous. Never thought I would be jealous over other people getting to run as much as they want lol. I am doing other cardio but still get pains when I run so will be a little while longer :(
Nice to see some new faces though! |
make sure you ice!
|
Ok, so im doing good so far this week.
Ran for 45mins non-stop on tuesday. I think I covered about 6.5k. Today I ran 34mins non-stop and covered 5k. Im chuffed with my progress but also a bit scared that Im doing too much too soon. I dont want to pick up an injury and have to miss the 10k race altogether. But in another way I feel like I could do even more. Oh I dont know, its so hard getting the balance right! |
Stephie, I remember reading something before about specific exercises you can do to help decrease your chances of getting shin splints. But the only one I actually remember is hanging a tin large tin of paint from your foot and lifting your leg up and down. Sounds nuts I know!
|
I am going running today - I am going running today - I am going running today. I must!
|
I've been following this running thread for awhile now, and not now, but hopefully in a month if I stick to my other stuff I'll be able to finally start running w/ you ladies... Keep it up!
Bida, I hope you ran! ;) |
I forgot to update - I finally did go running - that was indeed a good motivator for me - posting it online! Didn't run much - maybe 3.5 or 4 but man, afterwords you think, why did I even think about not running - it's such a sense of self accomplishment, and your body feels so great!
You can do it Dreamer! what is holding you back! Walk walk walk! I should try the tin can - my shins were scarely warning me today as I did a track workout - I think - I may have over analyzed it as I have never had problems - but I don't want problems!!! How is everyone doing??!! I did speedwork today with the tri team. Though I was not the slowest, i was the second slowest - but that was OK - there were four girls - 3 of us were the slowest, and one was 18 and did track in HS - so she could easily keep up with the guys! But it felt good to not be sooo far behind - and I need speedwork - I have a race next sunday - just a 5 miler - but should be good for me! hope to hear all about your running tails! |
I know, I need to... My schedule has been so hectic (warning... EXCUSE!) and I'm really hoping to do it, or at least start SOMETHING again this week... Glad to hear you went out running BIDA! The team sounds like fun, I'd love to find something out like that closer to me!
|
Hi! Welcome Dreamer!
I've been suprisingly motivated the last week. I did a 8k, 5k and 6k. Bida what kind of speed work do you do? I've been trying some speedwork but basically just making it up as I go along! |
Newbie Question
Hi Guys(Gals)!
Im doing a sort of accelerated version of C25K and I was able to run for 30 minutes at 4mph (on treadmill), how fast would I have to go exactly to make the 3 miles in 30 minutes? I know there is a formula I could use but I haven't done algebra since the SAT and I would like to keep things that way for as long as possible. Thanks! |
