Default Epic Diet Fail

I've fallen off the wagon today in a big way. I didn't work out, ate a bunch of crap all day, and still feel hungry ALL the time. Everything I see on TV I want to devour this instant. Boyfriend and I ate a McRib sandwich, all 700 calories of it.. And I hated myself right after.

I feel so ashamed and embarrassed. I felt like I was doing well but gave in because I'm so hungry all the time. It grumbles and yells at me and says, "Erica, feed me pizza!" And so I do. 4 whole pieces.

I know the next step is to jump back into the diet tomorrow, but what can I do to prevent these TERRIBLY AWFUL EAT MYSELF TILL I DIE THEN EAT SOME MORE binges?

Help save me from myself.

Same happened to me. Carb binge, after carb binge, after carb binge. Now I know why I avoid carbs all together. Forgetting today happened and moving forward.

I've been having these awful binges all weekend. I suggest filling up with soup or fiber-filled veggies so you're not hungry.

I binged over the course of four days last week. The results? I GAINED SEVEN POUNDS BACK! That's right, I work my *** off for three weeks, lose 12, only to gain back seven in four days. BUT I think of it as this. I can brush myself off, climb back on that wagon, and be 20 pounds less in a couple months. Or say screw it (like I usually do at this point) and GAIN 20 pounds in a few months.

I'm gettin' back on that wagon. You're human, you're going to make mistakes. We didn't get to the weight we're at overnight, you're not going to be able to be perfectly healthy overnight.

Give in to cravings on occasion and within reason and you won't have as many binges. Good luck to ya, sister.

What diet plan are you following? Maybe its too restrictive?
You shouldn't be hungry ALL the time. Hopefully you can find a middle ground between starving and bingeing.

Sometimes these things happen. You can't be perfect. If it's only a few days thing, then let yourself have one or two cheats a day until your done craving these things. If it goes on for a long time try healthier alternatives like the chilli from Wendy's or the chicken ceased from McDonalds. Let yourself have a latte with one of the low fat pastries from Starbucks, or even go and have a portion of ice cream (by which I mean go to DQ or the mall and have it, don't buy your own personal tub of it to eat at home, because we all know it'll be gone in one sitting). Whatever you do, DO NOT tell yourself that you will do better tomorrow. For me, personally, that is the kiss of death because that just gives me the permission to pig out like a mad woman, and the next day feel like a complete failure (like what's the point of even trying), and that leads to a scary slide into a very bad place... I would really tell you that the best thing you could do is have a hearty meal that will fill you up (even something like a pasta and seafood dish), so that you feel satisfied. Tell yourself that you need this, and continue on plan after without feeling guilty about it. The guilt will only make things worse after the meal.

Good luck!

(Everything I said above is just what works for me... Feel free to completely disregard if you don't think this is productive advice for you.)

Airycuh - what diet plan are you following? I have days like that too - where I feel like I eat everything there is to eat in my cupboard and still can't get full - but it's not a constant thing. Are you sure you are physically hungry or is it more that you feel like you are lacking something? Do you crave specific types of foods? Sometimes our body craves things because we are missing certain nutrients in our diet. How long have you been following the program?

I know this may stress you out, but take comfort in the fact that you shouldn't be feeling like this. Your diet may just need a little tweaking to get you to that happy place where you don't feel ravenous all the time, but are still losing weight.

don't watch tv!! lol.

but as some others have said, these things happen and the important thing is to try and not eat more tonight, and then start fresh tomorrow.

there's this quote that i often see on tumblr that i really like to refer to in times like these. it says "saying 'oh i already ate crap today so i might as well keep going' is like saying, 'oh i dropped my phone on the floor, let me jump on it til it breaks'". lol. seriously, just telling myself that tends to put things in perspective for me.

but actually, i had a pretty bad binge day on saturday so i totally feel you. there really isn't anything you CAN do when the "binge monster" attacks, because it's such a mental thing. i would say, try to go out, surround yourself with people or hang out with friends, cuz we tend to binge when we're alone. if you're with people, you'll be too embarrassed and then it will pass.

hang in there!!

I swear I can actually hear my stomach telling me to eat things! "Emmmmmaaaa...eat that cookie!!! Eat ten of them!!!" It is horrible. It actually got so bad last week I emailed my boyfriend from work and told him to throw out my peanut butter at home because I did not have the courage!

I try to only buy good, healthy snacks because I know how lazy I am and I know that I would rather eat healthy snacks then drive to the store!

Keep trying...and maybe wear ear plugs for the stomach noises!

Yeah, IMO keeping a really really big deficit every single day for weeks on end just makes people crazy. Finding the balance is going to be tricky but you'll find it.

Exactly. You said you're hungry, so perhaps this isn't a sustainable way of eating for you.

I know it can be an unpopular idea, especially amongst us women, but perhaps it would be best to raise your calories slightly so that you aren't feeling so ravenous. Your weight loss might be a tad slower, but if it prevents you from going crazy and eating your face off, it balances out doesn't it?

You also might find that you actually speed up your weight loss and prevent muscle wasting and metabolic adaptation by eating more. At the very least you might find you have more energy and end up just naturally moving more and burning more calories.

All of this begs the questions;
How many calories are you eating?
How much exercise are you doing?
How active are you in a typical day?
What kind of food are you eating? Can you post a sample?

I found when starting out, I was hungry quite frequently. Today was a bad day - I ate too many biscuits =(

But. I draw a line under today and start again tomorrow.

I have found that the longer I stick at it, the less hungry I am (as my stomach shrinks again). I've been fooling myself as well - I use a smaller dinner plate. And I don't deprive myself. I allow one treat a day - so a biscuit, or one packet of crisps - but I only allow myself them if I will only have one, and not the whole packet!

I'm sure you can do it. It's tough, and we have bad days, but you will get there!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your stomach isn't likely shrinking by dieting for longer periods of time... your metabolism adapting to fewer calories, and your hunger levels along with it.

This. I don't count calories anymore except on occasion to make sure I am okay. Counting consistently turns me into a total calorie monster. I obsess over every morsel of food I put in my body, and if I have some left over at the end of the day, I find myself indulging in things I would have left alone otherwise. It leads to headache, frustration and the occasional binge. I've fallen off the wagon numerous times from calorie counting. (This is why I've been on this site since 2010) It scared me so much to leave counting calories, but I have found that keeping very consistent food choices, having ball-park figures in my head as what is an acceptable and unacceptable amount of calories for each meal, and being aware of the nutritional values of the food I am eating keeps me in check. My weight loss is now at a slower rate, however. Counting calories is very formulaic. Calories in vs. calories out. Boom. You're losing weight. No matter how much I wish being a calorie counting machine worked for me (like it has so many ladies here), it totally doesn't.

With this advice, I am not saying to stop counting calories if you already do. I realize my method doesn't work for every one either. I do want to reiterate that I think it is totally worth it to lose weight at a slower pace in order to keep peace of mind. You're not going to stick with any diet plan if you cannot keep peace of mind. It's all about flowing. So, if you find yourself bingeing out often, maybe you need to think about whether you are happy or not with the plan you have now.

Maybe I've been depriving myself of certain items. Though I'm not calorie counting (it makes me overly obsessive and drives my house crazy) I've cut out all sweet treats, low carbs, bumped up fruits and veggies. I never drank soda to begin with, so I'm sticking to water, milk, and fruit juices.

I've been working out a large amount daily doing turbo jam and couch to 5k.
I'm usually a carb queen and love pastas so that's what binge on when I get to that point. Maybe I'm not eating enough during the day, so that by the evening I'm starving and eat a crap ton of pizza. We are a house that lives on pizza by the way...

Anyways. Today is much better for me. I felt so ashamed and guilty last night to the point where I felt I had to come clean to everybody here. I think if I change around my diet ill be much more successful.
