Default Big Weight Loss Right Away?

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty brand new to this forum, and to weight loss in general, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight. I've been at this two weeks as of this upcoming Monday, and by at this I mean I've been eating significantly smaller portions of healthier food - no exercise (yet!) I'm just trying to get the diet in check first.

Anyway, the scale this morning is reading that I've lost 9 pounds already. So 9 pounds in 12 days, more or less. I know that it's unhealthy to lose more than 2 pounds a week, but at the same time I have a fair bit of weight to lose and I'm so happy to see it gone. Part of me is thinking "this must be water weight, don't get excited, or, your scale is obviously off" and I'm just having a hard time with accepting that I've lost this weight!

I guess what I'm asking is if this is normal and healthy and can I start celebrating that I'm actually making some progress?!

Thanks everyone!

Hey girl, I'm new here as well, but I have had the same experience as you with the extreme weight loss the first week or so. It's water weight, unfortunately, but don't let that hinder your spirit! It's still nine pounds healthier and happier than you previously were! Good luck!!

Like Kori said, that 9 lbs is partly from water weight. I think that happens to most everyone when they first start making changes to your diet. I know I stopped eating a lot of fatty, salty foods and that's why I dropped so much water weight, that might be what happened for you too.

Hey if it's gone, it's gone! It isn't uncommon to have an initial "woosh", but as long is it's not coming back I say celebrate the loss!

I think it's normal, yep =) when I first started my diet I lost 12lbs in the first two weeks, then it slowed down dramatically, but it still pretty steady, so I'm happy!! Keep up the great work!

Thanks, everyone, for all the encouragement and advice! It looks like my best bet is to accept it and keep pushing forward. Looking back in another 20 pounds I will definitely count it as a loss, water weight or not.

Two weeks tomorrow!

Thanks again.

I definitely think it's fine and normal the first two weeks of exercise to lose a significant amount. My first two weeks (I started near the same weight as you) I lost 10 pounds, as time went on I found myself frustrated that teh weight wasn't comign off as quickly as those first two weeks! But I realize now that 1-3 pounds a week is healthy!
