Go to the docs and get a blood workup done. My hair was falling out pretty badly a few months ago and it turned out to be stress + iron deficiency. I've added an Iron suppliment and upped my Omega suppliment and it's stopped. I think fat has a lot to do with it. My nails were really brittle as well and with the added fat and iron they're great now.

I am not on any medication of any kind right now. I wonder if I can get blood tests at my college's health center.

You probably cant get a blood work up done at the clinic on campus. Ypu could however, over the next say 3 days, continue to eat as you have been, but log every single thing, maybe on fitday where it will track fat/protein and you can also ask it to track certain vitamins. Compare it to what you SHOULD be eating. Healthy fats are necessary for cell formation and membrane retention. Olive oil, flax seed, an avacado mushed with a hint of lime juice, garlic and spread on a fiesta stone wheat cracker is a good way to get some healthy fats. Multivitamins meh. If you're eating whole, healthy foods, it can turn into an expensive urine. If you dont need all the extras, your body just flushes it anyway, so why waste the money if you are eating quality foods. You can add iron to your diet with the addition of dark, green leafy veggies, aid its absorption by having a small serving of real OJ with a dark green salad loaded down with some black and red beans, salsa and a smear of avacado. Or have an orange with an iron rich food. After you've logged your normal foods for 3 or so days, add some iron rich foods, healthy fats for 3 days, see if you can notice any difference. Our skin/hair/nails are the best indicator of our bodies health and are one of the things a physician will look at when judging overall health, before going to the indepth stuff.

I have anemia, and I have not experienced hair loss. I take iron and b12 supplements.

My dietician made me add more fat back into my diet. She said hormones stop working correctly if the fat intake is too low for a long period of time. So even if that's not what is causing your hair loss you may want to make sure you are still getting enough healthy fats to prevent any other problems.

I went grocery shopping and bought avocado, nuts, and some more things so I can make some meals that have a bit more healthy fats in them. I use the daily plate online and I looked at my averages and I noticed I rarely get my daily allotment of fat.

Its usually a fat/protein deficiency thing. If I don't get enough fat, the same thing happens to me.

I would still recommend a blood test though

I am going to set up some tests and I also bought a multivitamin for women that includes 100% of my daily iron. I am sure if I am deficient in some things I am deficient in others... I might be having expensive pee but atleast its not HURTING me to take a vitamin.

I agree that a multivitamin cannot hurt, unless you're like my grandma and taking 70 billion vitamins every morning simply because the ads on TV say so. =)

But do check with the doc.

This is a good thread. I think I need to check the nutrients I'm taking in and make sure I get enough iron! Good reminder.

My hair was thinning on my left side but I haven't been so much on my diet and eatting crappy stuff and alot of meat and now my hair feels normal and looks normal. I agree with what people said just add more fat in your diet like salmon or avocadoes those sound yummy. And for me i should be getting back on my diet and eatting that as well so my hair doesn't start thinning again.

I am sorry that others have to go through this but I am also happy that I am not alone in this. There seems to be some literature online about hair thinning and weight loss but it is rarely talked about. Like its taboo or something.

I am still really worried but I feel better with all the support. I need to call my mom and see what I should do to set up blood tests... I don't want to worry her but I think getting tests will make me feel a lot better.

Blood tests won't hurt, if anything, at least you'll know for sure.

But be specific in what you want checked, the doctor can't read your mind.
