Stress eating

  • How do you guys deal with stress eating? I'm tackling the boredom eating ok, but stress eating still gets me every time.
    So how do you cope?
  • I struggle with this a lot too...

I crave sweet stuff when I'm stressed, so I've started keeping fruity gum around--chewing it does a pretty good job of cutting the sweet craving. I also try and drink a LOT of water when I'm in stressful situations, because it keeps you full and makes you less likely to start munching.
  • I have to deal with stress eating a lot, too! Especially during finals (like now). My solution is to go study @ the library, cause there's no food at the library lol but obviously that only works in my situation since I'm studying.

Drinking lots of water, like polarisx89 mentioned is good too! And it helps you get in your water requirements
  • I chew gum. But sometimes that's not enough.

I've realized when I want to stress eat I want something crunchy, so I also go for chopped up raw veggies OR I found these awesome cookies at Trader Joe's. They're crunchy, low calorie and come in great flavors.
  • I try to keep myself busy.... chewing gum helps, water helps.... and also (although I don't do this often enough) working out really helps blow off some steam!
  • I also struggle with this a lot. Its easier to not stress eat when you've got into good habits and had a good run up to the stressful time, but of course when is that ever the case?! I try to eat good, low calorie things, rice crackers are pretty good, and then figure out the stressor and how I can reduce it. I also try to keep my goal in mind and the fact that if i eat now because im stressed I'll just be causing more stress over my weight later
  • Thanks for all the input guys! Its my job that's been stressful. I'm working on fixing that, but I've been trying to cope in the meantime. I do need to up my water consumption, anyway, so that's a great idea.
    Thanks!
  • This isn't the *best* way to counter it, but I also tend up my diet soda intake when I'm stressed. There's no calories in it, and the different flavors give you unique options like snacking. The bubbles fill you up, especially if you don't usually drink soda. It may not be the healthiest choice, but if you don't overdo it, it works well.
  • I get the worst munchies when I'm studying (I stress big time about tests). I break up study periods with planned healthy snacks. This helps me get through studying and stay focused, I get study breaks, and my snacks are planned so I don't go way off plan.

I might chop up a green pepper or maybe have a weight watchers cheese stick or an orange or something. And then I just plan out when I can have the snacks.
