goal weight

  • I chose my goal weight according to what I was pre-pregnency(the first one). That was 7 years and 3 kids ago. Now I'm starting to wondering if that won't be pushing it and if I shouldn't change my goal weight by maybe about 5-10 lbs. I haven't decided what I'll do yet. I spoze I'll know when I get there..

How did you chose your goal weight and are you using that as a definate number or just a maybe and when you'll get to your sweet spot you'll know and just maintain?
  • I've never been as low as my goal weight as an adult. I chose it because it's right in the middle range for my bmi and it gives me some wiggle room for maintenance in the 130's. I am average height and medium frame so I think (hope) 130-something will look good on me but I might need to re-evaluate the closer I get to goal.
  • I put down the nearest round number that gets my BMI out of overweight category. When I get there I can fine tune if needed.

    A.
  • I haven't been my goal weight either as an adult. I chose it because I am a large frame and short. When I was skinnier I looked heavier then I was. The weight I carry is really noticeable. My goal weight is also in the normal BMI range for my height. Anyway, you can always adjust your goal as you go. I think some people adjust their goals as they're losing. You could try to get to your goal weight, but re-adjust if the scale won't budge or if you reach a weight that you are happy maintaining.
  • My original goal weight was 145 because it was smack dab in the middle of the bmi range. When I was at 155, it was obvious that I had more than 10lbs to lose, so I changed it to 140. I'm getting closer to 140 now, and I think I may even go lower than that to 135. I'm not going to change my ticker until I get down there though. For some reason, seeing "7lbs left" is a lot more motivating to me than "12lbs left." I still consider 140lbs my goal, anything past that would just be for vanity purposes, and I doubt I'd go lower than 135.

The lowest I've ever been as an adult (even as a pre-teen) was 150lbs. I was 160lbs as a high school freshman. So I'm not sure what my body will look like as I get lower. I kind of figure though, and I know this may sound vain, but if I've gone through all this trouble, I may as well keep going until I'm really happy with my body. This does not mean an unhealthy low bmi or anything, but maybe lowering body fat % and losing a bit more than I had originally intended. But if I'm not completely satisfied, why stop just because I reached a number I picked out of thin air?
  • Originally, I had put 161 as my goal weight. The reason behind that was the lowest I could remember being was 167 and that was still considered overweight. So I chose a nice, round number of pounds lost to put me in a healthy weight range. For my height healthy starts as high as 164 so I figured 161 would be good (that also put me at exactly 60lbs lost). However, when I got to 161 I wasn't happy. It's not what I thought I would look like OR what I wanted my body to look like. So I changed my goal down to 151. Still gives me a nice, round 70lbs lost in the end and I really think the last 10lbs would make a HUGE difference.
It's always ok to start with a goal you know you have been at before and then once you get there to change it. If I remember correctly, most of the maintainers here ended up changing their goal weights, whether that was up or down from their original GW. Best of luck to you!!!
  • I haven't chosen a "goal weight" yet. Right now I am just getting down to 200, because I can't remember the last time that I was 200 pounds (how sad). After that I will probably lose another 40-50 pounds. I am also finding that if I look at my entire goal, then it's just to overwhelming. But since I broke up my goals, it is easier for me to stay focused.
  • I was 130 pre-pregnancy, so I chose that. I'm actually hoping if the weight is still coming off I can drop to 120 though. That's what I weighed when I was 21ish
  • I chose 140 because it is somewhere in the middle of the healthy BMI range. But like everyone else has said, as I approach that number, it may change. I have no point of reference to go back to because I have never been at a healthy weight.
  • I chose 150 because it's right near the top of my healthy BMI. I have no idea how I'll feel once I get there because I've never been that small. But once I do reach it if I'm still not happy I'm going to focus completely on fitness and body fat ratio and not worry what the number says.
