Shin splints from using the elliptical?

  • Hi all,

In the past, I've always suffered from knee pain when I try to run. So I now use the elliptical - since it's low impact and much easier on the joints. But I'm starting to feel the pain of shin splints coming on! Is it possible to be getting them from the elliptical? Am I using the machine wrong?

    Any input is appreciated!
  • I got them from the elliptical from time to time, I'd suggest turning your resistance down and make sure you stretch before and after wards.
  • Make sure you're not up on your toes too much, that your feet are flat for most of the time (your heels should be taking more of the brunt then the toes) that should help. Shin splints typically occur when you're not fully stretching that muscle over repeated use, using your full range of motion should help keep 'em away.
  • I have trouble with shin splints and my back when using the elliptical. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong either but I have a history of back problems and I always have a back ache after using that machine.
  • I get them when I jack up the resistance and/or incline too high before I'm properly warmed up...
  • Thanks for the input y'all! I think I will try a lower resistance next time.
