Roller Derby?

  • Anyone else into roller derby? I just tried out for my local team today!

And MAN, 20 minutes on that track and I am totally dead and feeling awesome. Practice is twice a week for 2 hours each time. I'm super excited and know it's gonna kick my butt!
  • that sounds like so much fun! a movie came out not too long about roller teams and I kept thinking that it must be great exercise, plus it just looks kicka$$ You can exercise and have fun at same time and that should make it easier
  • Wow that sounds intense! I'm too chicken to try something like that, so all the more power to ya!
  • I wanted to do that back in college but just never made the time for it. I knew some girls who did, though. They loved it!
  • That's one of my secret dreams Granted, I've only been on roller skates like 5 times ever, but I'm trying to sneak out and practice every so often. It looks like so much fun!
  • I've been thinking about finding and team and joining for the last 2 years or so. I just don't know where to start. How'd you find it?
  • I found it through a posting on a local blog. But if you just do a google search you could probably find a team in your area.
  • OMG, I love it! haha I used to roller skate ALL the time growing up and went to an event a couple years ago and fell in love. I wouldve loved to try out with a team but I tore my acl in highschool playing v-ball and had a couple surgeries and am too chicken to hurt it again.

    Great workout too! =)

Heres me a few years back being a dork....haha

  • Smisen, I LOVE your (bellydance?) costume!

VernDern, that sucks about the injuries. It's definitely a rough sport. The local team here makes everyone carry extra insurance that covers all the injuries you get with skates on.
  • Another roller derby girl here

My screen name, Arsenic Alyss, is also my derby name. I LOVE derby and the women who do it! It's definitely rough, though I've been lucky and only gotten bruises and blisters so far; but in the end, it's all worth it for the community. Plus, it's not all about being skinny like many pro sports are. Having a big booty is an advantage!

I started in October 2010 and I'm taking basic skills for the second time TOMORROW (fingers crossed!). I lost a little weight in the first few months, but since then I've plateau'd, so clearly two practices a week isn't cutting it anymore, alas. Some of the girls in my league do street skating or go to the local rec rink on weekday evenings, but I always feel so drained after work. I think I'm going to make a goal to join them once a week so I'm skating three nights at least.
  • I have been involved in roller derby for 4 years, in various capacities... even at 255 lbs! I was impossible to move out of the way and could dish out some killer hits. My speed was not where it should be. I am down a few pounds and look forward to getting back on skates in a slimmer fashion. Refereeing is a blast as well. I did that for a year before taking a skating break due to financial restraints. Google your closest big city (or sometimes small) and 'roller derby'... you will be surprised as to how many teams are around. You dont need to know how to skate, necessarily. My team taught me! Give it a shot... if you can get past the obvious problems there are when you get a large group of women together then it can be rewarding.
