I go home for Xmas break today and it's like freaking 11 hours in a plane for me now... in addition to a 2 hour layover in between. I REALLY hate airplanes. I get a headache in the air, and I can't sleep in those stupid seats!
Not to mention, airport food is ridiculously high-calorie and EXPENSIVE, especially in Hawaii. Even when I think I'm not, I always end up overeating on those 4 days a year I'm at the airport.
Ugh.
I can't wait to just be in Michigan already... can I just skip the plane ride entirely?
Meg I HATE flying... and I couldn't imagine being in a plane that long... I hate the whole process of flying and the airports and layovers... I never sleep and I always get stuck sitting beside the worst people
I feel your pain, I'm constantly flying between Mississippi and Alaska. On the very best timed flights it's 17 hours in planes/airports just to get to the state and generally waiting overnight to get a prop plane to the village.
And I also find it impossible to sleep on a plane.
But getting home is always the best. Especially for me since both ways are home whether it's my Alaska house or my Mississippi house.
I get to look forward to our move to Perth Australia early next year. It will be 14 hours to the East coast of Aus and then an additional 4 or 5 hours across the country itself. That is the easy way, I don't know if we will have any layovers in the Pacific or Asia yet.
So please let me know what you managed to do about the food.
Ohhhh, I LOVE airplanes!!! There's something about airports...I just love it. I love people watching and watching the planes fly in and out...and tomato juice just tastes better in the air. I know, I'm crazy.
But I agree with you about the eating - the food is fairly unhealthy and flying makes me snack a lot. I just try to buy the healthiest snacks I can find once I get past security - nuts, dried fruit, energy bars - and pass on the stuff they offer on the plane. Except the tomato juice!! YUM.
My son will be travelling from Washington (state) to Lutsk, Ukraine in January. It's pretty much going to be awful. I think the flight to London is 12 hours, then he's got a 20 hour layover (yes, 20 hours!!!), then another several hour flight to Ukraine, THEN a 5-6 hour car ride. Poor kid! Once he gets there, he'll most likely love it. It's just the getting there that will be a drag.
Remember, you can take any non-liquid snacks through security. I avoid actual airplane food at all costs. Depending on the airline you can get anything from snackwell's cookies and chex mix to a full meal. Either way it's not worth the bloat to me. I either pack some veggies and dried fruit or I get something quick and healthy at the airport (so many options these days!).
Most of the time though I'm so focused on people watching and catching my flight that I just don't eat until I hit my destination
I'm in Michigan!
I made a plan and stuck to it.
In Honolulu I got a 3 oz packet of honey roasted cashews. I refused all snacks on the plane and just had water.
Once in Seattle I had my lunch for today (chicken&shrimp udon and a yogurt parfait) and then once again refused all snacks on the plane, not eating again till dinner.
Not bad!
My neck sure did hurt though.. and I couldn't sleep a wink. I was so relieved when I finally landed.
I love flying too and I agree, there is just something about Tomato juice on a plane
I try to eat healthy by buying bananas or apples during my lay over and chewing gum to keep me from munching.
Glad you made it safe and sound, enjoy your holidays!
i like to fly as well! I usually pass on all the food (unless it is international, then you can order special meals like the veggie option, or low carb option on some airlines.) However, I never pass on the drinks! I usually have to have a Bloody Mary or two. I hate tomato juice in general, but on a plane it is fabulous!
I'm flying from Alaska back to Mississippi tomorrow. Not terribly excited; I leave at 8 am and get in at 8 pm tomorrow.
I've got my bag with fruit, granola, nuts, and veggies (cucumber, carrots, etc). At least with the majority of my airport time being in the ridiculous am, the majority of tempting places will be closed.
Edited: I mean, I get in at 8 pm on Thursday. I'm on Alaskan village time, you have no sleep schedule because there is no sun ;>
Kinda OT, but I once flew from Detroit to Chennai, India. It took 30 hours, and we were fed 6 times!
Detroit - Amsterdam: dinner & breakfast
Amsterdam - Mumbai: lunch & dinner
Mumbai: airport was under construction, so they had us wait in a hotel lobby for our 5 hour layover. There was nothing to do - except eat from the buffet. We weren't hungry, but we were bored!
Mumbai - Chennai: breakfast
And when we arrived in Chennai, all my friend's family wanted to do was feed me!
