Camping on a Diet?

  • SO, I'm going to be camping out at the Texas Renaissance Festival later this month...We'll be there friday night through sunday morning...

Only thing is, I'm really worried about how it's going to affect my diet. I generally just eat smart ones and stuff like that for lunch, and so I don't know what I'm going to be able to eat. I want to be able to stick to my points and still have fun, and I'm just not sure what I'll be able to eat.

I'm going to be there with my boyfriend, his sister, and her boyfriend, and I'm probably going to have to cook for all four of us. We'll have a campfire, and my dutch oven, and possibly a propane stove to cook on...

Does anyone have any suggestions for things that I could cook to feed all of us lunches and dinners? My plan for breakfast is just slim fast shakes, which is what I do now anyways...lol.

    Suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
  • Take a big cooler w 2 bags of ice. it will stay unmelted for that amount of time. (I went for 3 days with the same and had lots of ice still left)

You can do sandwichs with lean lunch meat for lunch. (You can eat yours open face) You could also bring tuna and cheese and do tuna melts over the fire. If you skip the mayo for yours and just do one slice of cheese thats about 300 cals for an open face sandwich.

Beans are a really good source of fiber and easy to take camping! What about doing a lean protien like grilled chicken and then a black bean, corn, bell pepper salad? You can use canned black beans and fresh corn and bell pepper. Just make a vinegarette to put on it (balsamic and some oil) add cilantro for flair.

Chili is also good - you can buy the canned (not amazing but edible) and get the 98% fat free turkey for you. Or make your own (super healthy) and bring on the ice for reheating.

You can also do hot dogs for everyone but get links that are healthy (aidelles makes great apple chicken) and you can skip the bun (they are around 150 cals per sausage I believe) you can serve with a side of beans and garlic bread (you skip if you don't have the cals for it?)

I love doing big breakfasts camping... coffee, bacon, eggs etc. 2 peices of bacon is actually not that many calories but is of course still a treat bc of high fat.

    Good luck
  • I had a camping trip this summer as well with the same concerns. Here's what I did:

For breakfast I brought fruit, fiber cereal and yogurt. Lunch I brought protein shakes (Kellogs has good one's!), cut veggies and hummus and for dinner I had veggie dogs cooked over the campfire (they're only 70 calories each!!) It wasn't so bad at all.

    Good luck!
  • Don't bring snacking food! You'll get bored and eat it!

That's what happened to me this summer.....just sat around and snacked/read/fished all day....

plan your means before you go - and bring just enough food. It'll make the whole trip easier on your way back
  • Good luck!!! I went camping last weekend and I failed so miserably. Somehow, I didn't gain too much back (maybe due to the alcohol-induced puking...), but I truly wish you the best of luck. I personally couldn't do it and I'm glad I'm not going for a while!
  • When my DH and I go fishing, we get turkey dogs (like polish sausage) and wrap them in a Carb Balance tortilla. The whole thing is 3 points--- add mustard and onion for no more points...... You can do a turkey burger or Boca burger with the same principal. Get some raw fruit and veggies instead of chips and you are good to go!

Oh, and when we were traveling to Vegas this spring, we kept a cooler of Slim Fast (the cappucino kind) they are 3pts (really 3.5), but it helped with $ and with staying on track.
  • They always have grills when your camping so I would bring like turkey burgers/turky dogs for yourself and hamburgers/hotdogs for them maybe some chicken breast and just sandwich food during the day with healthy bread/meat and bring lots of fresh fruit
  • Well there actually aren't any grills, we're pretty much camping in a big open field with hundreds of other people and no electricity or water...but I'll figure something out. So far, you guys have given me lots of great ideas...thanks so much! =D
