How do they do it?

  • I used to be able to do this but I think I would go the whole day without eating and then drink and eat pizza at night. Which, if you think about it, would actually be possible considering alcohol (6 beers = 768 calories) and pizza (3 slices = 816) only equals out to about 1584 calories... you could actually maintain on that. It's definately not healthy tho.
  • Ugh, you're telling me. I used to do it... but it wasn't nice to me, like it was to the rest of my friends. So, while over the years I became a bloated, sick, HUGE monstrosity... these skanks (though I love 'em hehe) stayed tiny and perfect!! Ah well, life isn't fair, is it?

Now that I've quit drinking and partying and doing all that stuff to my body on a regular basis.... I've SERIOUSLY gotten majorly healthier.... and it feels great!

I mean, I still go out now and then (I'm going out tomorrow night for my sister's birthday actually! Club, here we come!), but if it happens that another friend asks me out a week or two or even a month after that... I have to turn them down because that's just too much for me now. Especially since a night of drinking and food debauchery (cos face it, that's where it leads) usually sets me back on my weight loss for about a week.

It is possible.... but not the way it used to be.... but you know what? It's worth it... I like being healthy.
  • Quote: on my truly nasty days I remind myself that even the fastest metabolisms slow with age. It's uncharitable I know but it keeps me from thinking that these people somehow live a charmed life.
I do this too And i remind myself that there are other ways to get "fat", and that even skinny people who eat badly can have fat sitting around their organs so fooey to them!
  • I just think of myself as ahead of the curve It may be hard to get into the habit of eating well and exercising now but I imagine it would be harder in ten years when all my friends start.
  • I have skinny friends, too, who don't exercise (how DO they do it?!)

But then I think, well, at least I basically *have* to exercise on a regular basis to lose/maintain, which keeps me healthy and not just weight-wise.

I like to think of it as nature's way of reminding me to stay active.

But of course a lot of times I wish I could eat whatever I wanted and sit on my bum... :O
  • I'm one of those people that always gets asked how do you do it, eat like that and stay. What you don't understand is people like me put WAY more effort into staying skinny than the average person. You don't see me sweating my but off everyday at the gym running on the treadmilll. You don't see me eating 80% of the other times watching every calorie I eat. You only these people eat large portions 1 time and then you just automatically assume they are "born" skinny. Its really frustrating to people who work so hard to maintain their weight and then when they eat a larger portion everyone is like wow how do you do it? All you do is eat, which is completely untrue.
  • If you read my original post, I mentioned that it is a consistent pattern of overeating on a junk food, I made a point to mention that it is not just once in awhile. I did that for the exact purpose of not offending people who do work hard. Please read a post in it's entirety before responding. With that said, I am sorry you were offended. It was meant to be a humorous post of solidarity.

Again I will make the point you are still not seeing them eat 80% of their meals. You also don't see them in the gym or during their daily activities. YOu ASSUME because you see them eat 20% of thier meals and of those 20% they over eat.
  • I live with 4 guys, 3 of them rail thin. I see what they eat, and they do NOT work out, nor do 2 of them do a lot of activity during the day that would lend itself to being considered exercise (they have desk jobs, with the exception of one, who's a lab worker so he stands up all day). Then, they get home and play video games all night. So unless using your right hand on the mouse and your left hand to type counts as exercise...

Same thing with my college roommates (girls) - we were together 24-7. They didn't work out (or walk to class) and had nightly Wendy's runs. This caused me to gain 20 lbs, and caused them to gain nothing (and I DID walk to class). There's no assumption there, unless I want to assume that they were throwing up everything they ate, or were secretly working out at 2 am.

Some people just have that metabolism that allows them to eat what they want, not work out, and not gain weight. Her post wasn't a personal attack on you, she was just venting frustration.
  • I am a student in college, these are my very close friends, and we eat 2/3 of meals together and they are constantly telling me about how they admire my motivation to go to the gym and that they will someday go. That is why I made a point of mentioning my CLOSE friends who I eat with often. It is definitely not a personal attack on you or anyone who works hard; it was simply a comment about fast metabolisms. They were an example, not the entire point of my post. The main point was the people who do not exercise or work hard. And I know because I eat with them.
  • I think its a blessing in disguise. After we complete our journeys we're gonna be pros at health and getting the baby weight off and having healthy LIVERS!!! Dont let it frustrate you! sometime we are given hurdles so we can learn from them and better our lives . Most of my skinny or normal friends have acne/heart/high cholesterol issues. im 20lbs overweight and have none of these problems because i drink lots of water and stay way from too much meat/processed/pesticide filled stuff. Had i been "blessed" with a fast metabolism i wouldn't care or read about the disgusting things that are in processed non organic food that will eventually give me cancer or shut down my thyroid. So be happy your in a good zone!
  • There are people who are like that (eat unhealthy food, not gain weight). And I know two of them. And while they look awesome for their age (we are all in our late 30s or early 40s) they have cardiac problems and are on medication for high blood pressure. Neither would be able to keep up with me running, or biking. How do they do it? When they were younger they had fast metabolism, now they starve, going on coffee and nibbling on something for most of the day, and then binge on unhealthy food and alcohol. Which kinda explains their conundrum.

I have been overweight/obese for 5 years now, but I was always otherwise healthy, active and had a superb diet. They can't believe I keep passing my yearly physicals with flying colors. I decided to lose weight before my luck, or good genes, couldn't save my *** anymore.

The point that skinny =/= healthy cannot be stressed enough.
